i was looking at the Iconoclassic web site today and saw Hot Tuna's first album in their catalog as an expanded edition with bonus cuts to the original release plus the entire second show. Was wondering if that second show is the same set that was released a couple of years ago on Collector's Choice?

Product Description
Digitally remastered and expanded two CD edition of the 1970 debut album from the acoustic Blues duo. When RCA Records encouraged the Jefferson Airplane's Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady to record a series of dates they were performing as a duo they jumped at the opportunity. Little did either man realize that these dates, recorded live at the New Orleans House in Berkeley, CA, would lead to a more than 40 year association as Hot Tuna. These, mostly acoustic, performances of blues standards sprinkled in with some original songs would form the basis for Hot Tuna performances over many years to come. This Deluxe Edition is graced with five additional songs that originally expanded the album on the box set, Hot Tuna In a Can. The second disc consists of the entire set that was performed on the evening of September 19, 1969, which has remained completely unreleased until now. Mastered by Vic Anesini with an informative essay from Airplane biographer Jeff Tamarkin.

The greatest Sunday Morning album ever. Looking forward to a definitive Iconoclassic treatment.

I actually can't imagine any cd edition sounding better than the last RCA remaster (they really got that one right), but the expanded part is of interest.

There's a review on Amazon that says the answer to your question is a qualified "yes".

Though the description of Deluxe Edition indicates that the second disc is of a set that has not been released previously. This was a multi-night stand, so who is to say. But the link Geff references, mentions that the CC disc has been released by Friday Music as well (same reviewer states).

I also do like to smash my beer bottle on a Sunday morning to this one :)

Actually, that sound is so ingrained in my head that when I listen to any other version it is jarring when I don't hear it. It's a very strange feeling.

I ordered the Iconoclassic deluxe edition and received it at work today. Cannot wait to take it home. At first glance, the artwork, label reproduction, and notes are the usual Iconoclassic high quality. The second disc is an entire show from 9/19/1969, and according to the notes is previously unreleased....so a nifty companion to the Collectors Choice (and now Friday Music) issue.

So, breaking a beer bottle on Sunday morning, uh....Uncle Sam Blues????

Iconoclassic also put out Boogie With Canned Heat at the same time as Hot Tuna....so, it came in the package too. ;) I realize that's another thread but wow, I think they are my favorite label these days. I could go almost anywhere with them...

I read that HT would get annoyed, as fans would smash their glasses on cue whenever they played the song later.

So inquiring minds want to know - how is the sound quality?

I'm especially interested in the Canned Heat - is that better than the previous CD version?

(which is so old I can't remember who put it out - maybe 10 yrs old or more...) :luddite:

The Johnny Winter is supposedly "remastered". Curious if it's actually a sonic upgrade also.

I have Boogie on a BGO twofer with "Canned Heat" and the Iconoclassic is a definite upgrade from that one. The BGO came out in 2003. There are nice bonus cuts on the new remaster including a cool, slightly more up tempo On The Road Again. But overall, the sound has more definition, more crispness, more roundness. Just beautiful. Oh, the BGO reissue contains only the abridged 6 to 7 minute Fried Hockey Boogie while Iconoclassic includes the entire 11 minutes plus. Very pleased.

Same goes for the sound on Hot Tuna (though I haven't compared it to the previous RCA reissue I have from the mid to late 90s).

That's great news Murdog - My first two Canned Heats are from See For Miles 1989/1990 versions, so the Heat and the Tuna will both be must-buys for me....The See For Miles version has the complete Fried Hockey Boogie at 10:59 ( written as Fried Hookey Boogie on the cover and booklet - but what do the French know about hockey anyway?)....

..and DON'T forget to Boogie....

BTW am I the only one that suspects that ZZ Top purloined the Heat's sound to start their career?

Thanks for your reviews.

Well, about the last comment, I think even the Canned Heat guys would've told us they owed quite a debt to John Lee Hooker (even did the Hooker 'n Heat album together). But doesn't the best rock and roll steal shamelessly anyway? Three chords and the truth, man!

Heck, Free Bird is only 2 chords different than Pachelbel's Canon In D!

And when you speed it up on a turntable, it sounds just like Stevie Nicks...

I thought that was Imaginary Lover by ARS.... Do you think all Southern Rock from the 70s can somehow be attributed to Stevie Nicks? No offense. I like her music. Just sayin' ...
