Originally released at the end of 1965, My Generation is still a staggeringly confident and raucous collection of songs that shows the band were well out of the traps and on their way to becoming one of the all-time world-beating rock ‘n’ roll bands.
Highlights include covers of James Brown’s "Please, Please, Please", Bo Diddley’s "I’m A Man", the self-penned classics "The Kids Are Alright", "Legal Matter" and "The Ox", plus of course the epoch-rattling title track.
Not only has the album been remastered, it’s also presented here in the Mono version, which is considered to be something of a holy grail for Who aficionados. This original Mono version is as close as possible to how the band envisaged it sounding in the studio, and contains many overdubs which were lost in previous Stereo masterings.

If I recall this has only been available in Japan before? At 5 lbs this seems to be a no-brainer as I've always read this was the closest to how it really should've sounded, but I'd want to hear others' thoughts before ordering.

Stating that the mono mix has been a Holy Grail for Who fans is a little mis-leading, as there was no stereo mix of this album available until 2002 when the deluxe version was released. That is the one that is missing a few over-dubs because Pete recorded some solos and vocals directly to the mono masters. But if you have any previous CD of this (or the U.S. counterrpart, The Who Sings My Generation) then you already have the mono mix. If you don't, the price is certainly right on this reissue. It's available at Amazon.ca as well: http://www.amazon.ca/dp/B0097JMTHM/?tag=imwanca-20

This particular remaster is (probably) the one released in Japan about three or four years ago in a two-disc collector's box, one that may or may not have been released in a mini-sleeve about a year ago. (This stuff gets very confusing, and I'm going mostly by memory here.) The US equivilant, "The Who Sings My Generation", was available on CD in mono for years, but lacked "I'm A Man". But yeah, I think that this just may be the first official straight CD issue of the original UK 12-song mono version of "My Generation".

I'd love to get the Mono SACD, but it's pricey.
Guess I'll get the mono remaster. I'd contemplated getting the easy to find original MCA mono CD, but I'll wait for this reissue.

The best version that I myself have ever heard was the all analog vinyl cut from the eighties on Virgin UK.
Of course for some of you vinyl is not an option but for me you buy the best sounding copy and if anyone really wants to know up to this date that pressing is the likely winner.

Best version that I have heard, and its not even close, is the mono vinyl from the Phases box set. Can't really brag about any cd masterings I've heard. Will probably pick this up and hope for the best.

It has been confirmed that this is a BRAND NEW remaster and NOT the same as the Japanese 2008 remaster of the Mono mix done by Jon Astley and has nothing to do with the Deluxe Edition. Who did this remaster is not known just yet but this is definitely new.

According to this posting ( http://www.superdeluxeedition.com/news/ ... ring-query) the source tape used for this new CD is not the original Talmy master tape but a copy tape which was created/used for the Phases box in 1980. Why they chose to do this is anybody's guess. The master tape is available, and was used for the recent Japanese releases cited above by Linda. That Phases tape may even be a copy of a copy, since I think the original master tape was still in Talmy's possession and hence unavailable in 1980.

If true, then I already have a better version. Oh, well.

I think what is odd here (besides a lot of people flipping out online at various sites) is that they would use a copy from 1980 that would be at least 1 or 2 genertions (no pun intended) down. (Although I have heard that the 1980 copy for the Phases box sounds very good). Doesn't mean it won't sound good and easily could be better than the Deluxe Edition, but if they used the original tapes for the 2008 Japan SHM-CD, they why not release that here? This could be for legal reasons, or to get another version out there aside from that which makes little sense. There must be a reason it's so cheap!

I think I'll wait and see what the consensus is on the new CD's sound quality before taking the plunge. If it's not as good as the MCA CD out there now, I'll just get that one. It's plentiful and cheap!

The MCA CD features the US track lineup though, meaning you get "Circles" instead of "I'm a Man", and "The Kids Are Alright" is the lousy edited version.

I like the mono sound of the US version better than Shel Talmy's stereo remix of the UK version. And the sound quality of the CD itself isn't bad, either.
