Any idea why they're pricing this 5-CD set like a 6-CD set?

Volume 1 - 6 CDs - $119.98
Volume 2 - 4 CDs - $79.98
Volume 3 - 5 CDs - $99.98
Volume 4 - 6 CDs - $119.98
Volume 5 - 6 CDs - $119.98
Volume 6 - 5 CDs - $99.98

Volume 7 - 5 CDs - $119.98

Thanks for the heads up. Just ordered mine as well (and threw in the Love Blue Thumb set for good measure. Glad it's payday!).

Good question, I haven't seen any price justifications. Maybe they need to actually make some money; it must be difficult at these low volumes. I am just glad to get my hands on it and I am sure they suspected I would pay even more than that. Isn't that price on par with the Bear Family stuff, though? I seem to recall paying over $30 per cd in some BF releases....

I tried to send Hip-O Select an e-mail to ask them about this pricing issue, but...

This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification.

Delivery to the following recipients failed.

hipocrates@hip-oselect.com

Apparently their own advertised contact e-mail address doesn't work.

Apparently Hippocrates was outsourced. The new guy works from home but failed to tell his employer that he only accepts work via phone.

I've often wondered how Hip-O Select is allowed to continue operating (is that what's known as a tax shelter?). I think only one title has ever sold out (Captain and Tenille?). I'm grateful they're still here and pumping out the Motown series. Naturally I'm concerned about the apparent rising cost to us as consumers for these sets but I'll do what it takes to keep this music coming to my music room. They are gorgeous sets (inside and out!).

The cd of unreleased David Ruffin material sold out quickly and goes for hundreds on eBay now.

These are precious to me, and give me incentive to get out and earn money so that I can buy what I want (not what the bean-counters think they can provoke me into purchasing). So if they offer these sets I will buy them with no argument on cost. The Motown singles collections are better in all regards than the fifteenth remastering of the seventh recompilation of the typical big business releases.

I hope that Motown UK will do the OOP David Ruffin some day. They are not bound by the limited edition guarantee.

I finally got a response from a contact inside of UMG and it was exactly as follows:

"We’re looking into it…"

Hopefully this means that the price is a mistake. On top of that, the link for this set has disappeared from the Hip-O Select website.

If you already ordered it...make sure you get charged the correct price. If you haven't ordered it yet, here's the latest e-mail I received...

We’ve pulled it off the site. It should go back up at the correct price shortly. Thanks for the head’s up.

Walter,
I just wanted to tell you that I think it was absolutely fantastic of you to help people out with this. You just saved people a ton of money.

I ordered the set at $119 right before Walter squared them away. I emailed Hip-o-select (suresource or whomever) and they just responded with a refund notice for the 20 bucks. So cool on both parts ... Walter P --- local hero; Hip-O-Select -- doing the right thing.

Good karma!

Thanks guys...but I'm no hero. I'm sure I was one of a bunch of people who e-mailed them. I just saw it when I went to order and I thought it was odd, particularly when Hip-O seems to be lowering their prices somewhat, like in the case of the recent Marvin Gaye, which was $29.98 as opposed to their frequent $39.98 for a 2-CD et.

By and large, I have a lot of good feelings for the stuff that Hip-O Select is doing and even though I think they've been skewing a little heavy towards Motown as of late, I still think that they do good work.

You mean expecting a cut is a little over the top now? Really? Damn!

I bought the set the day it posted for the high price. Without any action on my part I received an e-mail from Hip-O Select advising me that I had been overcharged and a refund was on the way. Now THAT'S customer service.

I feel that way too, but look at it this way, collecting the individual albums and comps would be even more expensive and only a few of the artists have gotten the box set royal treatment. These singles sets give you the best overview and they are in mono!

All six of the previous volumes have eventually been made available at the larger online retailers like Amazon and CD Universe -- in the case of the latter, at nicely discounted prices. I think I'm gonna wait on Volume 7 until it shows up at CDU.
