Let's hope this doesn't replace the upcoming complete albums box set. Let's also hope the idiots at Sony/Legacy make a sensible 2 CD comp for those who want one. That however, is unlikely.

It's not like they ever cared when they put out the dozens of previous comps.

I think it's safe to say that they're just trying to milk the catalog for all it's worth. Oh well, Buck has mentioned in the past that they owed Columbia a boatload of money.

They're gonna do just like they did with Toto, coming out with a single disc "Essential" and then wanting you to buy another one buy throwing some more songs onto the heap on a second disc. No thanks.

Might this turn out to be a repackaging of the 2-CD Workshop of the Telescopes comp? Which was actually a pretty good retrospective, with some rare (at the time) material.

I'd like see some stuff from Imaginos on this. A very underrated album.

I own the first 3 albums (which I love) and would jump all over a greatest hits that does a great job of compiling other songs I like. The Jethro Tull 2cd retrospective from the 90's is a good model--thoughtful song selection, no live material.

Repackaging a previously released comp? A record company would never do that!

I actually don't think they're doing that here, but we'll see.
This was a good collection, but it was in one of those ugly fat double cases I'm so glad they got rid of. I sold mine because the rare tracks became irrelevant with the remasters and it took up too much room.
Hopefully this is something worthy but I highly doubt it. I just hope they stick to the box plan.

Amazon now has this listed as 1 cd , a decent BOC essential cd needs to be 3 cd's . Whatever happened to the box set that I read about in Newsday last fall ?

Bump:
Now updated with a track listing. This is new and not a reissue of the old comps. A very good selection-I could've seen a few other songs and it seems there was space for it.
With new remastering I may pick this up at the right price.
I'm still hoping for the upcoming albums box even though I know it will be one of those PopMarket type things.

I'm sure I will pick it up, but once again nothing from Imaginos . I would have like to seen Fire Of Unknown Origin on there , Divine Wind or Lips In The Hills instead of The Marshall Plan , Dr Music instead of In Thee . Those 2 songs or on just about every BOC comp . Maybe they'll pop up on the eco friendly expanded 3.0 version 6 months later .

A shame Imaginos was ignored again, but the only radio hit was the update of "Astronomy". The others you mentioned are fan favorites (and I love "in Thee") that should be on a comp, but the tracks you listed as missing cuts should be on there too. And, why is "Born To Be Wild" included? I'm upset "Perfect Water" is absent as well as "The Vigil" and "R. U. Ready To Rock", but these comps rarely have all we want.
Still, it's better than I expected.
You might be right on those ass-ugly 3.0 comps!

The track listing is not all radio hits . A couple of really good songs from Imaginos that could have made it are Del Rios Song and I'm The One You Warned Me Of (imo) .

Not TOO bad. I would have liked it to end with a song or two from Imaginos (which I used to own on cassette), but it's not a bad comp. I own the first three albums, which I absolutely love, and this might be a good way for me to wrap up some of the later songs like Don't Fear the Reaper, Godzilla, and so on.

But that's what you want-not what a record label is going to put on there and make money from. I could list a bunch of obscure songs too.
I never said it was all radio hits-my point was that the only cut any casual fan would know would be "Astronomy" and that's pushing it. Personally, I think Imaginos is awful, but it should be represented in some way with at least one track.
These comps are not made with people like us in mind.

That's interesting. Why do you think that Imaginos is awful, Pedestrian? Is it too tongue in cheek for you?

I think "Imaginos" is a great album hampered by a lousy production. I love the imagery and think it has some great songs - "The Siege And Investiture Of Baron Von Frankenstein's Castle At Weisseria" is the kind of outlandish hyper-dramatic stuff that I loved in the black and white era.

It has never been properly remastered and even the semi recent American Beat reissue now goes for ridiculous money. It needs to be back in print.

Well, considering how over-produced it is, going back over 10 or 15 years, I imagine all the overdubs and old tapes probably make it a real nightmare.

Not to mention the dislike within the band (especially from Eric), I doubt any of them are in too much of a hurry to help sorting it out. It would be nice to get a nice remastered and expanded edition though, with the songs that were left out and maybe with Al's original versions before Columbia had Buck and Eric redo most of the vocals.

As far as official releases, I LOVE the first 4 1/2 (BOC/Tyrannies/Secret Treaty/On Your Feet/Side 1 of Agents) & after that they're mostly miss for me. The others I like are ETI Live & parts of Fire (mainly Burning For You & Joan Crawford). I also enjoy the UK Tales of the Psychic Wars 2 CD Set. The rest just don't do much for me. Never got into their songwriting after Fire of Unknown, & even before that they pretty much lost me with the boring side 2 of Agents (talk about 2 different albums: the original side 1 is great & the original side 2 for me at least is "why did they bother") & with overplayed stuff I really disliked like Godzilla.

I suspect the above opinion is in the minority big time here.............

I agree to some extent......though I think Cultosaurus Erectus is a very good album.

....and love Fire Of Unkbown Origin, the song, written by Patti Smith.
