ALL of the Pete Townshend remasters should now be out and available...
But there is an update posted over at Musictap--

Hip-O Records will also re-release a classic album from Pete Townshend and Small Faces/Faces genius, Ronnie Lane.
The album is known as Rough Mix and is currently scheduled for reissue on January 9.

This is likely the CD-only version.
The current version that was released here in the U.S. was a DualDisc, containing a 5.1 surround mix of the album.

The UK version (appearing in thick digipaks there) was just the redbook CD remastered (with the same bonus tracks), so... they likely are making it available here too.

ALSO:
Copies of All The Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes that have been *priced* at $19.99 at Best Buy locations, should have this erroroneous price corrected in the Best Buy system.

At least this is what happened to me there last week -- I asked the BB clerks about the price error and the fact that this particular title was still being stickered at $19.99. I was told that it now scans out at $12.99 as do most of the other single-disc Pete Townshend remasters (the only title priced less is Pete Townshend Live, which is list-priced at $9.99 at Best Buy... and also at Tower locations.

(Obviously, the 2CD Scoop collections are priced higher.)

Why is Best Buy stocking these Townshend titles--but neither Borders nor Barnes & Noble (except for via special order)?

Here is a reposting of the original Billboard article on the Pete Townshend remasters (pulled from the defunct ICE board).

from billboard.com--

Townshend Solo Catalog Expanded For Reissue

July 21, 2006, 12:00 AM ET

Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.

The Who principal Pete Townshend's solo catalog, a number of titles from which have been out of print for years, will be reissued in expanded editions Aug. 29 via Hip-O/UME. The move is timed to coincide with the Sept. 12 kick-off the Who's fall North American tour.

The majority of the reissue titles feature new bonus tracks. 1980's "Empty Glass," which is best known for the pop hit "Let My Love Open the Door," will feature alternate vocal versions of "I Am an Animal," "Keep on Moving" and "And I Moved" plus an extended version of "Gonna Get Ya."

The 1982 follow-up, "All the Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes," includes the previously unreleased "Vivienne," which appeared on the initial LP track list but was later pulled, plus the B-sides "Man Watching" and "Dance It Away."

Townshend's 1972 solo debut, "Who Came First," sports the five bonus tracks included on a prior reissue plus three new items: "Mary Jane," "I Always Say" and "Begin the Beguine."

1985's "White City" boasts the previously unreleased songs "Night School" and "Save It for Later" plus a 12-inch vinyl extended mix of "Hiding Out."

All three releases in Townshend's archival "Scoop" series are also part of the reissue campaign, loaded with demos for classic Who songs and fascinating departures from the artist's usual guitar-based compositions.

"When I have come up against any kind of problem in the past I have always dealt with it through music; either through writing a song or literally recording the problem away therapeutically," Townshend writes in the liner notes for the first "Scoop," which was released in 1984. "For many years recording was my one and only hobby."

Townshend's 1977 collaboration with the Small Faces' Ronnie Lane will be available as a DualDisc with a new audio mix, plus the bonus tracks "Only You," "Good Question" and "Silly Little Man," which are outtakes from the sessions.

The 1990 concert souvenir "Deep End -- Live" has been expanded with "Magic Bus" and "Won't Get Fooled Again." The album is drawn from a 1985 charity show at London's Britxon Academy and found Townshend backed by Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour and a horn section, among other musicians.

Townshend's 1993 rock opera "Psychoderelict" will appear both as a CD and a live DVD taped that year at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. The CD includes the non-album track "Psychomontage" (b-side).

The artist's 1989 musical "The Iron Man," adapted from Ted Hughes' story of the same name, includes the bonus tracks "Dig" (with Simon Townshend on vocals), "Man Machines" (b-side), and "I Eat Heavy Metal" (the demo with Pete Townshend on vocals).

Has anybody else noticed that Hip-O has apparently dropped the liner notes present on the SPV digipak reissues of many of the Townshend titles? The discs otherwise appear to be similar. Anybody know if the new Hip-O Roger Daltrey reissues have liner notes or not? (The Castle reissues from which these are repackaged have fine essays; Hip-O also dropped two or three tracks from Daltrey's MOONLIGHTING anthology to create their GOLD, it seems.)

I haven't been in a Borders lately, but ALL of the Barnes & Noble bookstores here had the complete selection of Townshend remasters.

At the BB here Chinese Eyes are marked at $12.99 and there is a small sign that says "Price reduced to $12.99 save $7." "Reduced" to the price everyone else has it for. :)

I drove up to Sarasota to scout out CD's last night. The Borders had NO solo Townshend and the Barnes & Noble had a single copy of the "Gold" collection from last year. However the Best Buy (a store I hadn't checked when the CD's were first issued sinply becauuse I have gotten out of the habit of browsing there) had all 11 Townshend reissues and even the FYE at the local mall had three of them (albeit at $19.99 a throw). Someday (not today) I'm just going to go ahead and order these from Amazon for $9.99 apiece and get them mailed to me. CD shopping in stores has just become too boring, expensive and depressing these days.

I couldn't agree more. Went to Best Buy last night for Townshend's Iron Man and Scoop CDs and all they had were Chinese Eyes -- about 10 copies --- all for 19.99 each. Aprrarently the $7 reduction hadn't made it to this store yet. The selection there is typically dismal. (But I did take advantage of their on line snafu and got the Gram Parsons set for the price of a single disc a while back.)

Went to Borders across the way and while they had both Townshend CDs they were 16.99 and 25.99 respectively. Ridiculous. The big box stores have turned music into an elementary school student's commodity. And the book store chains just stink. Too many hoops to jump through to get decent pricing with their stupid cards and coupons and selection is lame anyway.

We have a great indie downtown but at 9 or 9:30 at night it's not practical to get there from the suburbs before they close.

With Tower on its way out and only a few decent indies left it's getting bleaker

I don't know if this was discussed elsewhere, but I just noticed this: The non-Dual Disc version of "Rough Mix" with bonus tracks is scheduled to be released next Tuesday, January 23rd.

Also--Most (not all) of the bonus tracks from the Townshend remasters can be purchased individually on I-tunes (gee, I can put a whole batch of "new" Townshend songs on a single CD for about $15, saving something like $80 AND the trouble of driving 15 miles to the nearest Best Buy to get them by purchasing a bunch of music I already own?--I'm rethinking my I-tunes apathy...)

I guess it all depends on what sound quality you're willing to settle for. For me, 128kbps is unacceptable and I avoid the iTunes path as much as I can. It's a matter of personal taste.

All I know is I just got a cool CD of "new" Pete Townshend stuff for less than $15. To me, this is exactly the sort of thing I'd be willing to pay to download on a song-by-song basis. I guess I'm just happy I can't tell 128kpbs from K-Tel.

Somewhere on this chatroom, I did mention a while back that the single-disc version of Rough Mix was due to be released here in January.

The original UK import was released many months back as just the single-disc version.
Only here in the U.S. was a Dualdisc version released offering a surround-sound mix as well.

For what it's worth--The version of "Night School" is NOT the version that's been bootlegged off of the "White City" video for so many years.

Boy, this thread was sure a walk down memory lane--wish I could have anticipated my future self cringing when I wrote some of this crap.

Anyway, just felt like passing along this tidbit--the "Rough Mix" DualDisc is apparently now an expensive OOP collectable:

Speaking of the PT expanded remasters, is the US version of Chinese Eyes still in print?

http://www.amazon.com/s/?url=search-ali ... g=imwan-20

You can only buy new copies thru 3rd party vendors (very expensive).

The US version is also not available at CD Universe. It's dropped off the planet it appears.

I wouldn't be surprised. I like the album a lot, but I don't think it's ever been certified gold or anything like that.

I played that album literally nonstop for a significant part of 1982.

yeah...pretty sad.....I totally dig that album!! I remember feeling a real letdown at first, but after revisiting and a few more spins - I was totally hooked. Just a real melencoly and sadness almost on that one. Just it made for some great music.
