Product Description
From the people that brought you the "Take Me To The River" and "The FAME Studios Story" box sets, this compilation puts the spotlight on the music emanating from the South's greatest label - Stax Records of Memphis.

In the early 60s Stax defined the sound of Southern Soul through the work of Otis Redding, Sam & Dave and Booker T & The MGs. From 1968 onwards the label widened its reach and, although records were still cut in their own studio, the label was also using studios in other parts of the city and the south. "Nobody Wins" follows these developments through a mixture of rare gems, previously unreleased tracks and a sprinkling of classics.

Of the previously unreleased numbers, the earliest is the Charmels' `I've Done It Again' from what was probably the under-recorded vocal group's last Stax session. Chuck Brooks provides us with a brilliant version of `Hold On This Time', and Kent have a wonderful unreleased number by Stax songwriter Bettye Crutcher.

Kent have also gathered together many rare singles that have not been reissued or were only available on the Stax singles box sets. In this way they have unearthed masterpieces from Jimmy Lewis, Willie Singleton, Freddie Waters and Mack Rice.

Elsewhere they have one side of Charlene & The Soul Serenaders' in-demand Volt 45, and a number from Calvin Scott's obscure LP. Classic performances abound from Stax greats William Bell, the Soul Children, Eddie Floyd, Mable John and Johnny Taylor.

Here are 22 tracks that demonstrate that Stax remained at the top of the Southern Soul pile until it shut up shop in 1975.

1. Stay Baby Stay - Johnny Daye
2. I've Done It Again - The Charmels
3. Love Changes - Charlene & The Soul Seranaders
4. Move Over - The Soul Children
5. Hold On This Time - Chuck Brooks
6. Where Was He? - Jimmy Lewis
7. Nobody Wins Til The Game Is Over - Mack Rice
8. Groovin' On My Baby's Love - Freddie Waters
9. Stealing Love - Eddie Floyd
10. Crossing Over The Bridge - Inez Foxx
11. Make A Joyful Noise - Bettye Crutcher
12. Lovin' On Borrowed Time - William Bell
13. Two Fools - Willie Singleton
14. You're Leaving Me - Ollie & The Nightingales
15. The Fault Is Not In Me - Sylvia And The Blue Jays
16. Shouldn't I Love Him - Mable John
17. Will You Love Me Forever - Johnnie Taylor
18. I've Never Found A Girl To Love Me Like You Do - Calvin Scott
19. Let 'em Down Baby - Jimmy Hughes
20. Woman Across The River - Little Milton
21. A Love Affair That Bears No Pain - Shack
22. Lonely Life - John Edwards

Whoever wrote that blurb made a bit of a mistake... The Charmels' "I've Done It Again" was already released on both the Kent CD "Lets Crossover Again" and "Deep Shadows".

I really wish someone would do a complete collection of the Charmels' recordings... they might not have had any hits, but I think they're great, unique sound, very underrated...
