Bannings: If you're not nice
It's going to be a 10-CD box set, no DVDs. Full details are in the first post.

Are you sure? I thought it includes 96/24 2.0 dvd-a's??

CRAP.

Oh well, if you're right at least I get to save a lot of $'s. There's no way I'm spending this kind of coin for a few bonus trax. I also thought the SACD of Avalon wasn't all that good sound wise.

Wow-guess the drought's over. Yet more money I don't know how I'll come up with. I have some, not all of the remasters and they sounded beautiful, but had no bonus cuts.
Those were on the Thrill Of It All box which goes for a lot of money now, but this looks great. I don't know if they will be seperately released or not.
Further reissues I assume would be the live albums. It says 4 DVDs and mentions ALL albums will be in DVD-A so does that mean multiple albums on the DVD-A's or are they visual DVDs? Not clear. I don't have any real use for DVD-A which is why I hope they issue the albums seperately. We shall see. I love this band and this is cool news.

What is the sound quality like on the current (1999) remasters?

Apparently these will be different remasters but the Hi-rez DVDs was the attraction for me plus I don't like card sleeves

My VAGUE memory is they are acceptable, but to be honest I haven't played any on my main system in a LONG time. I would have to revisit a couple to give you a legit answer. From looking at my CD list, it appears the last batch of Virgin remasters were HDCD; so it's quite possible they are better than these new ones!

It appears I own all of the UK HDCD editions with the exceptions of Avalon (Netherlands SACD), Viva (USA Warner) & Flesh & Blood (USA Warner).

I'll try to play a couple of the HDCD's in the next week on my main system & post back.

BTW, there also is a high res version of the UK best of out there; I haven't heard it yet.

OK...I look forward to that...I only have a couple of comps but the 1999 HDCDs are very cheap here in the UK so I am tempted to buy the ones I am interested in (the first five)

Having bought them all I thought the HDCD ones were easily amongst some of the most compressed and bloated reissues of all time. HDCD is a nice format but it's what you feed the encoder with that matters. If you aren't gonna go for this set, try the 90's 07777 8***** series which are more clearer than the Polydors and easier on the ear compared with the HDCD issues.

I was all in for this set when they announced its release for early April. When it didn't come out I set about recollecting pristine LP versions of all of the albums. The first four are available as exceptional 180g pressings and the last four are easily found in near-mint shape in used bins and on eBay. I've had all the b-sides for years on the Thrill of It All box so I'm going to sit this one out. Besides, who doesn't want to see those album covers full size?

Wow, when did the DVDs get removed from this package? I was really looking forward to them, and hoping that they might include surround sound mixes too. The price better drop significantly now or I may have to pass on this.

As for the packaging, it's hard to tell whether or not these have inner sleeves. The photo shows some kind of insert in each sleeve, but it's hard to tell if it's merely a card with credits & lyrics, or perhaps an inner cardboard sleeve with those credits & lyrics. Hopefully it's the latter, but not having inner sleeves is not a deal breaker for me. Just a disappointment.

They look like cardboard inners to me, which is the same as no inners to the disc surface.

As RETAIL on the rice paper inner sleeves is around 13 cents (probably 2 or 3 cents ea wholesale in bulk), there is no excuse not to use them in these megabuck sets, especially as the cardboard sleeves are already saving the labels a tom both over jewelcases & in shipping costs.

I recently ordered the Bowie LP/DVD. I've heard the dvd just sits in a cardboard pocket in the LP packaging. I am going to be SO PISSED if it's scratched. If that info is correct, it would also prevent me from selling the LP as I'd planned.

Severine, it took less than 1 minute (For Your Pleasure & Country Life) to determine I agree with Kaja; FTP is basically unlistenable & while CL is better, it leans loud also.

I must have only played these on my computer when I bought them, as I did replace almost my entire 1st gen set with the HDCD's.

I don't have the 1st gen's here to compare except the 2 I mentioned previously.

I wont be getting these now. The DVDs were the major attraction.
No idea why they changed their minds.

OK, here's an update:
There will now be NO DVDs included as we know.
The bonus cuts are now on 2 seperate CDs.
It looks like there are inserts for each release, but I'm still not 100% sure. Sure seems that way from the picture.
US release is Aug. 14.
There will be further releases this year, and perhaps that's where the DVDs will surface, so I
would not give up on that for you Hi-Rez nuts.
I am still very interested in this, not having the box and not caring about Hi-Rez although if done right, this is one band where that format would sound amazing.

This is from the seconddisc:

As initially announced, The Complete Recordings 1972-1982 will present all eight of the band’s studio albums, from Roxy Music to Avalon, each digitally remastered and expanded with a host of non-LP B-sides and remixes, 12 of which are making their debut on CD. Initially, the package was due to feature four DVDs presenting the music in “high-resolution audio, transferred digitally from the original analogue masters.” (According to the link at the top, the DVDs would have featured the albums in 96/24 LPCM stereo.) However, the set will now only feature 10 compact discs: the original albums will be presented on their own, while the bonus content will form the final two discs.

The set is out on August 6, and will, according to a press release, be the first in a series of catalogue activities to commemorate the band’s 40th anniversary.

Since my Roxy Music collection consists of the original CD pressings from the '80s (or possibly early 90s), this could still be a great sonic upgrade for me, and I like the idea of 2 discs with the bonus tracks. The big issue right now is the price, as Amazon has it listed for $102.85 today. I think that would have to be cut in half for me to click the "Add To Cart" button, so I'll be keeping an eye on this as the release date approaches.

I'm seeing it for a lot less at UK Amazon. You could order it from there.

They're not a part of this and have not been for quite some time now. Don't know if they will get a seperate release or if they're a dead issue.

Pete, thanks for clarifying. I may have even known this at one time; I have pretty serious short term memory issues at this time.

I'm out unless there's a major blow out price ($25-$35 or so).

Geff:
No problem so sayeth ALF. I actually forgot about this release altogether! Now I see it's around $79 US, but I'm still gonna hold out. A real shame for you High-Rez people-and yet, still no explanation as to what happened!
