Probably to capitalize on being named musical directors of the London 2012 Olympic ceremony, Underworld is releasing two new collections, the 3-disc "Anthology 1992-2012" and the single-disc "Collection." Digital versions have been available since December.

Funny I really liked their 1st 2 80's albums which always kinda sounded to me like Jethro Tull meets Squeeze, but they lost me when they went techno (most of their career).

"Underneath the Radar" is one of my favorite "lost 80s" tracks. And before they were Underworld, they were Freur, who scored a new wave hit with the memorable "Doot Doot."

"Doot Doot" has a nice easygoing synth groove. It was a big favorite on WDRE back in the early 80s. And it was used quite effectively in the recent vampire film Let Me In.
Freur recorded two LPs but only the first one was released in the US. It was reissued on CD by Oglio some years ago, but it's OOP.

I think "Underneath the Radar" and "Change the Weather" would be great candidates for the reissue treatment, plus a disc of mixes and bonus tracks, from a label like Cherry Red. They'll never get the same respect that Underworld's 90s albums get, but they're kind of fun in their own way.

I had their first compilation a few years ago and didn't like it. Their compositions don't work (for me anyway) out of the context of the original albums.

Listening to Freur now. Still deciding if i like it. 4 of the 5 guys from this are also on the first 2 Underworld albums. It kinda sounds like 80's Underworld meets quirkier 80's groups like Wall of Voodoo, Human League, Devo, etc.
No idea why I didn't see it at the time, but I now view a lot of New Wave as musical comedy.

Like usual, I posted too soon before listening to all of it. I like "Doot Doot" (the album). Not so sure about "Get Us Out Of Here". That's the one I was describing above. Doot Doot sounds quite a bit like pre-electronica Underworld.
Oddly, according to the Liner notes, Get Us... was the 2nd album, but it appears first on the cd.
