The Cars/Candy-O/Rock Goes To College

Image

Product Description
Formed in 1977, The Cars were at the forefront in merging 1970s guitar-oriented rock with the new synth-oriented pop that was then becoming popular and which would flower in the early 1980s. With production by Queen’s Roy Thomas Baker, The Cars released six albums between 1978 and 1987, all of which went platinum or multi-platinum in the US and around the world. In the UK and Europe also, the band had hit after hit, starting here with the first three tracks on the first album: “Just What I Needed”, “My Best Friend’s Girl”, and “Good Times Roll”.

I was excited until I saw they were two-fers. They look like absolute crap and the two-fer of The Cars/Candy O is a mess with all the bonus cuts from The Cars appearing on both Disc 1 and 2. Yuk.
I'll have to pass sadly. Seems Edsel is going nuts with two-fers now which I cannot stand.

Yeah, it's really weird that the Cars/Candy-O set has the bonus tracks from The Cars album continuing onto Disc 2, with Candy-O not starting until halfway through the disc. Would it have killed them to put one extra disc in there so that Candy-O got a disc of its own?

Still, these sets have some interesting rarities. I'm surprised it has taken this long for the Cars catalog to get reissued with bonus tracks (aside from the 1st album and the few rare cuts on the Rhino box set).

I have the original albums and I have the anthology, so I see no need for these.

I would have interest in the Cars/Candy-o DEPENDING on price. 2 fers don't bother me at all.

I just picked up the MoFi Gold OMR of "Candy-O". I doubt any of these could come close to the MoFi version audio quality.

Bump: these just went up for pre-order at Amazon. I've added links to the first post, and also brought in-house the tracklistings and other release details which Morgan had linked to at the Edsel/Demon site -- that information now directly follows his opening post.

I wonder if the Heartbeat City has the original tracks crossfading into one another like the original LP. The AF Gold version caused quite a stir because of the the tracks being seperated.

I wish they would release shooting for you. Did that ever show up anywhere (besides a n Alan Vega cover)?

ok... i get it, i get it. nifty new re-packaging.
and i'm happy to see a few rarities on cd from the "heartbeat city" genre.
but here's me being hypercritical:
there was a remix of "i'm not the one" included on the original single-disc GH.
it's a real shame it's not being included in this series.

Supposedly, The Cars also recorded a version of the Jules Shear song "All Through the Night", but never released it. Elliot Easton played guitar on Shear's Watch Dog album in 1983, where the song first appeared. Of course, Cyndi Lauper later recorded her own version of the song, and had a Top 5 hit in 1984.

And that's not even mentioning "Tonight She Comes..."

They were supposed to release rare hits compilation by Rhino. It was in Ice & had a release date. It was pulled at the last minute and we got an expanded first album. Anyone know what tracks were going to be on it? I remember a track called "Don't Tease on Me." What was that?

"Tonight She Comes" was exclusively for The Cars Greatest Hits album of 1985, so where would they put it? It wasn't from any album sessions. It is on the excellent sounding comp Complete Greatest Hits from 2002 as well.
Great song-and what a fantastic guitar solo-one of my all-time favorites by anyone. I remember Elliot Easton saying the solo is so detailed because they spent more time recording that one song than they did the whole first 2 albums.
I've never bought a two-fer, ever, but I may make a change here because I don't ever see any new US remasters coming for The Cars catalogue which is ridiculous. Rhino is dead.

It's also found on the "Just What I Needed" anthology from 1995.

These have been pulled in the UK due to liscensing issues. Not sure if they're still coming out here in the US, but Amazon.com still has them up for now.
