I see amazon.com has a new Vic Anesini remaster of Get the Knack. Anyone have it? Is it maximized/clipped? I would be interested to know how the sound compares to the many other masterings.

Product Description
Digitally remastered edition of this 1979 debut album from the Power Pop quartet, one of the greatest and most successful debut albums in the history of Rock 'n' Roll. Get The Knack emerged from a late seventies landscape that was littered with Disco and overblown Rock 'n' Roll. Punk and New Wave were taking hold when this completely infectious, melodic and punchy music came screaming out of the L.A. club scene and created one of the music industry's most famous bidding wars. Get The Knack features some of the greatest Power Pop music ever made and includes the massive worldwide number one hit 'My Sharona', and its follow-up single 'Good Girls Don't'. Despite the quality of some of the music that followed, this incredible album was the crowning achievement of the band's career. This edition features insightful new liner notes by Power Pop historian Ken Sharp and a new mastering done by Grammy Award winning engineer Vic Anesini. Get The Knack is back!

1. Let Me Out
2. Your Number Or Your Name
3. Oh Tara
4. (She's So) Selfish
5. Maybe Tonight
6. Good Girls Don't
7. My Sharona
8. Heartbeat
9. Siamese Twins (The Monkey And Me)
10. Lucinda
11. That's What The Little Girls Do
12. Frustrated

22d,

To my ears, the 2002 remaster was closer to the original release (Get The Knack was a huge album for me in its day, and the sound of the 1979 vinyl is committed to memory). That remaster has a few minor bonus tracks as well. It's out of print, but the Newbury Comics storefront at Amazon still has reasonably priced copies in stock:

The new Iconoclassic version actually sounds a little better than the original release -- technically better -- but it just doesn't seem "correct" to me. It's more FM-friendly than Mike Chapman's spare, punk-pop production was probably intended to sound.

I'm keeping both versions, though. :-)

Is the new version the uncensored version? The original CD (way back when) had edited versions of a few songs. The 2002 was the first, I believe, to have the version that matched the vinyl release. A new master is intriguing, but not necessary to my ears.

LOVE that album!

Alan

Alan,

The new remaster -- the Iconoclassic one in the first post -- does contain the uncensored album versions of all the tracks, but no bonuses.
