Someone at the Hoffman forum has posted part of a Mick Jagger interview where Jagger speaks about an upcoming 2-CD reissue of "Some Girls", stating that(as with the "Exile on Main Street" bonus tracks) that he has added vocals to some backing tracks which had no vocals, and the "Some Girls" 2-CD set will have 10 bonus tracks.
I would add this: "Some Girls" was the inevitable next album to get the expanded treatment, because, in the 1990's Mick Jagger added vocals to six unfinished "Some Girls" recordings, with the idea of possibly using them in a Rolling Stones box set. In the end, only one of those six("So Young") was released, appearing on a UK CD single. So the remaining 5 selections put Mick Jagger 50% there towards completion, in assembling 10 vault tracks for the "Some Girls" set. A "Some Girls" set would require the least effort from Mick Jagger. This set is a no brainer. Will I be buying it? Yeah.

Agree it really is the last great Stones album, a massive hit for them and made them relevant again. You couldn't escape that album in the Summer of 1978 (which was one of my best ever). I can remember driving out to the Hamptons every Saturday to deliver outdoor furniture and those songs were always on the radio. In May 1978, the first single from the album, "Miss You", a prowling, moody number built on a stripped-down disco beat and bluesy pop harmonies, was released to very strong response, garnering The Rolling Stones their last US #1 hit and reaching #3 in the UK. Some Girls appeared in June to a very welcoming audience, reaching #1 in the US and #2 in the UK, becoming their biggest-selling studio album in the process (currently certified six times platinum in the US alone). It was also a major critical success, with many reviewers calling it a classic return to form, and their best album since 1972's Exile on Main St. "Beast of Burden", "Respectable" (in the UK) and "Shattered" (in the US) would follow as the next singles, all becoming minor hits as well.
The Stones embarked on their summer US Tour 1978 in support of the album, which for the first time saw them mount several small venue shows, sometimes under a pseudonym.

I would say that the last great Rolling Stones album was "Tattoo You", though it was basically an outtakes album with tracks recorded between 1973 & 1978, so some of the tracks were "Some Girls" outtakes.

Thats why I wouldn't count that one (though it is a fine collection of songs) and its fun to listen too.

I agree about "Tattoo You" being the last great Stones album. Regardless of them being outtakes & older songs recently completed, it's excellent from start to finish. I felt that "A Bigger Bang" was a return to form when it came out, but haven't heard it in a few years and not sure if it holds up. But it's certainly not essential.

I'm just delighted that the Stones have finally begun mining the vaults over the past few years, while I'm still around to enjoy it all. Add this to the Ed Sullivan shows on DVD and the live Some Girls CD+DVD, and I'll be celebrating this fall.

I never really ever got into "Some Girls" as a record the way I got into some of their other albums. Part of it might have to do with the repeated recurrence of the extended version of "Miss You" on the recent singles box, but that's exactly it--the songs on the album just have gotten old for me over the years. Of course, what's most notable about "Some Girls" is that it's the Stones' all-time best-selling album, so what the hell do I know.
That said, I've heard bootlegs of what were ostensibly "Some Girls" outtakes, and unlike other Stones outtakes, these appeared to be finished songs, albeit because they were likely recorded live in the studio. The one I remember most is "Claudine", about Claudine Longet, although I also remember an extended version of the 80's b-side "Think I'm Going Mad".
"Start Me Up" might have been a "Some Girls" outtake; I don't know if any of the reggae versions the Stones tried in the studio have ever surfaced on bootleg.

This will be the same deal as the Exile deluxe reissue and box set last year. The Some Girls sessions actually produced over a 100 songs, some of which ended up on Emotional Rescue and Tattoo You. There won't be a deluxe edition of Tattoo You because all of those songs (sans Neighbors) were outtakes from Goats Head Soup (Waiting on a Friend, Tops - both with Mick Taylor on guitar), Black and Blue (Worried About You, Slave, and a reggae version of Start Me Up that was later re-worked), and Some Girls/Emotional Rescue (the rest). It sounds like the Some Girls set will be similar to Exile in that it will have 10 outtakes touched up with new Jagger vocals. There are many complete-enough outtakes from this era that it would be a shame if they don't see official release. Eagle Vision will be releasing a Blu-ray and DVD of the Some Girls concert professionally filmed in Texas (may be a theatrical release as well), much like they did with L&G around the same time as the Exile reissue. It's great that the Stones have finally opened the vault... I've heard Goats Head Soup and/or Sticky Fingers could be up next. SF could be tricky because it was recorded essentially at the same time as Let It Bleed, and they switched labels between albums. The Some Girls set will either be late this year or early next year.

Believe me, as an owner of many bootlegs, they could make SG a three CD deluxe edition. There isn't a recording session that they did - with exception of maybe Emotional Rescue - which produced as many quality outtakes. Some of the SG outs that haven't seen official release like "I Can't Help It (Love You Too Much)" are much better than some of the songs on the original album. The band spent an enormous amount of time in the studio from 1977-1980 stockpiling material.

It sure is strange why Mick Jagger wants to re-do or overdub his vocals to these out-takes when they do stand up really well as they are. I have a 4 CD Some Girls out-takes set and there are some rippers.

Oh...Yes...Please. I thought the Exile set was amazing. I can only imagine how great a Some Girls set will be. I always hoped the Stones would open up their vaults (while the guys are still in shape enough to do it themselves). Never in my wildest dreams did I think they'd spend this much time on them and actually finish the songs. They make 'em. I'll buy 'em.
In reading the comments above, is it possible they could take some of the many outtakes from Some Girls and spread them among reissues of Emotional Rescue and Black & Blue (since these were all recorded within a short time of each other)?

from the hoffman site: Mick Jagger confirms that 'Some Girls' reissue will have about 10 new tracks http://www.examiner.com/rolling-ston...-10-new-tracksMick Jagger confirms that 'Some Girls' reissue will have about 10 new tracks Rolling Stones lead singer Mick Jagger has confirmed what many people had already expected: The remastered reissue of the Rolling Stones' 1978 album "Some Girls" will have previously unreleased tracks that were written during sessions for the album. Jagger revealed the information in an exclusive interview with German TV network ZDF. The release date for the "Some Girls" reissue is to be announced, but the album will be released by Universal Music. In May 2010, the Rolling Stones' 1972 album "Exile on Main Street" had a similar reissue with previously unreleased tracks. "Stones in Exile," a documentary film about the making of "Exile on Main Street," was released on DVD and Blu-ray the same month. The Stones marked the event with a "Exile on Main Street"/"Stones in Exile" party in New York City, with Jagger, guitarist Keith Richards and drummer Charlie Watts in attendance. (Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood did not attend the party since he joined the band in the mid-1970s, after "Exile on Main Street" was recorded.) As previously reported, the concert film "Some Girls Live in Texas 1978" will be released November 21, 2011, on DVD and Blu-ray; the deluxe versions of the DVD and Blu-ray releases will include CDs. The concert film will also be shown for one night only in movie cinemas worldwide in October 2011. The dates (which will vary by city) and locations for the theatrical release are to be announced. In the ZDF interview, Jagger said: "I've just been in the studio finishing some outtakes from 1978 ... They're going to be released [on] a rerelease of 'Some Girls.' So these are going to be some 10 extra tracks from that time [that] were never released. Some of them had no vocals, so I had to do the vocals again. I did the same thing on [the reissue of] 'Exile on Main Street.'" The interview was mostly about Jagger's band SuperHeavy, whose epnoymous debut album is set for release in the U.S. and Canada on September 20, 2011, and in other countries on September 19, 2011. The members of SuperHeavy are Jagger, Joss Stone, Damian Marley, Dave Stewart and A.R. Rahman. Jagger didn't really say anything about SuperHeavy that he didn't already say in other interviews. He also gave very diplomatic answers when he was asked about the state of world affairs. In the interview, Jagger mentioned that one of the things that he likes to do in his free time is go fishing in the Caribbean. "I go with my children. We do a fishing competition every year." As for touring, Jagger said that there are no plans for SuperHeavy or the Rolling Stones to tour in 2012. Since 2012 is the 50th anniversary of the Rolling Stones becoming a band, there has been much speculation that the Stones would tour in 2012 to commemorate the milestone anniversary

This is so awesome although I'll opt for just the 2CD version. I do not feel in any way this was their last great album however. Tattoo You is one of my all-time favorites and one of their very best (and who cares when the tracks originated, it's frickin' fantastic). Steel Wheels and A Bigger Bang are damn good too. Voodoo Lounge was very good, Bridges To Babylon was OK and Undercover and Dirty Work have their moments but each are too flawed. I also find it funny how people keep claiming the CD is dead but we keep seeing these very elaborate, expensive physical collections coming out like crazy.

Every Stones albums has one or two great songs but Some Girls and Tatoo You were better.
