Product Description
“One of the best singer / songwriters to emerge in the 1970s” All-Music Guide. Raven reissues two acclaimed albums, long out-of-print, by New York-born, Paris-based singer / songwriter / producer / journalist ELLIOTT MURPHY – Lost Generation (1975) and Night Lights (1976). During the early 1970s alongside Bruce Springsteen, Murphy was labelled “the new Dylan” by the America media. His streetwise songs reflected the influence of his friend Lou Reed, mixing poetic lyrics with hard-edged arrangements. Murphy performed regularly at New York clubs Max’s Kansas City and the Mercer Arts Centre, mixing with the art-rock scene that included Patti Smith and the New York Dolls. Following his debut album Aquashow (1973), he signed with RCA Records and headed to Los Angeles to record Lost Generation (1975) with legendary Doors producer Paul A. Rothchild. Backing musicians included guitarists Ned Doheny and Sonny Landreth, pianist Richard Tee and ex-Derek and the Dominos drummer Jim Gordon.

For Night Lights (1976) the concept was akin to “Prodigal son returns home to the mean streets of New York City and rediscovers his roots”. Produced by Steve Katz and featuring the likes of ex-Velvet Underground guitarist Doug Yule, ex-Modern Lovers Ernie Brooks and Jerry Harrison (just before he joined Talking Heads), Billy Joel, Andy Paley and Richard Davis, it was another critically acclaimed release that fell through the cracks. Murphy emigrated to Paris in 1989; in 2012 he was awarded the prestigious Medaille de Vermeil de Paris in recognition of his career as a musician and author. With superb audio quality and insightful and candid notes by Murphy himself, this entertaining CD is a must for fans of timeless singer / songwriter rock ‘n’ roll.
