“Phil Spector Presents the Philles Album Collection” Box Due in June

Purchasers of Legacy’s upcoming wave of Philles Records reissues due in stores on Tuesday can be forgiven for hesitating to pop the Vic Anesini-remastered discs in the CD player for a moment, at least. Immediately on opening their jewel cases, a full-color insert becomes visible, promising a most exciting June release sure to grab everyone’s attention: Phil Spector Presents the Philles Album Collection. The box is adorned with a famous photo of Spector in his prime at the studio console and appears to contain a deluxe booklet in addition to replica sleeves of six essential Philles releases. None of these albums, all of which will be newly remastered for CD, have ever appeared in the format before, and they represent six of the first seven LPs released on the label. (Philles 4005, of course, is A Christmas Gift for You from Phil Spector, which has already seen release in Legacy’s new Philles program.)

The six titles are The Crystals’ Twist Uptown (Philles 4000) and He’s a Rebel (Philles 4001), Bob B. Soxx and the Blue Jeans’ Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah (Philles 4002), The Crystals’ Sing the Greatest Hits Volume One (Philles 4003), the various artists compilation Today’s Hits (Philles 4004) and Presenting The Fabulous Ronettes Featuring Veronica (Philles 4006). Many of the songs on these LPs have never appeared legitimately on CD, and songwriters include Brill Building legends like Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, Gerry Goffin and Carole King, Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich, Gene Pitney, Doc Pomus and Spector himself. The famed Los Angeles “Wrecking Crew” worked their magic instrumentally on the Gold Star-recorded tracks (some of the earliest Crystals tracks were actually cut in New York’s Mira Sound Studios), and among the vocalists featured are Darlene Love, Bobby Sheen, La La Brooks, Fanita James and Ronnie Spector. This is truly the crème de la crème. Hit the jump for more, including all track listings!

This box set appears to be a must-have for fans of Spector or just classic vocal pop. This is just what collectors have been asking for, as these six albums are the core of the small but revolutionary Philles catalogue. The only remaining commercial LPs released on the label are three Righteous Brothers collections now controlled by Universal (You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’, Just Once in My Life and Back to Back, representing catalogue numbers 4007, 4008 and 4009, respectively), a Lenny Bruce LP (4010) and Ike and Tina Turner’s River Deep Mountain High (4011) which never saw U.S. release in this format. (Some mono records were pressed, but this release never made it to the cover printing stage. The track listing was released in the U.K. on the London label and later in America on A&M with one alteration.) River Deep Mountain High is reportedly slated for reissue later this year from Hip-o Select. (For label completists, a 1972 radio promo compilation entitled The Phil Spector Spectacular apparently exists as Philles 100, compiling old material.)

It is not known at the time of this writing whether the six albums comprising Phil Spector Presents the Philles Album Collection will contain any bonus tracks, but the vaults have indeed been opened by Legacy with the release of “Woman in Love (with You)” on The Very Best of the Crystals. Be sure to check back next Tuesday when your friendly neighborhood catalogue correspondents weigh in on all four titles in Legacy’s new Philles series!

Just to be clear, the posting on Second Disc merely indicates the track listings of the original albums. We don't know yet how this thing is going to actually be configured.

Not yet, Dean, but we're waiting with bated breath! As soon as there's more information to report, we'll duly pass it on.

WOW!!! And did Vic Anesini-remaster these as well? I expect so, therefore this is a must!

I wish the Christmas album was included in a mini-LP cover...

It's curious that the new information being shared around the web all credits this one French website. Does no one else really have any information? Makes me a tad suspicious.

Patience, friends - there's nothing suspicious; an official announcement and confirmation of release date is most definitely forthcoming.

Legacy's most recent announcement was for a September 13th release date, with this description:

Quote:
Fifty years ago, legendary producer Phil Spector established his own record label Philles, and a new sound began to ring out of radio speakers across America. The sound Spector created lush, resonant, and dramatic, blending the sentimental swoon of string sections with the excitement of rock and roll was so different, so instantly recognizable, it earned its own name: The Wall of Sound.

Through the 1960s, with songs like Be My Baby, Then He Kissed Me, Walking in the Rain, and Da Doo Ron Ron, he ruled the pop charts and made artists like Darlene Love, The Crystals and The Ronettes household names.

Through the 1960s, songs that rang with Phil Spector's signature studio approach ruled the pop charts. In his heyday, Spector's name was more popularly known than the artists he made famous the Ronettes, Crystals & Darlene Love. His had the Midas touch the pop singles on his own Philles label were as ubiquitous as Motown's and rivaled the popularity of the Beatles.

The Philles Album Collection brings together six pivotal albums from Phil Spector s groundbreaking label. Each remastered mono album is presented in its entirety for the first time on CD. Packaged in mini-vinyl replica sleeves and housed in a deluxe box, these classic 60's albums showcase the labels legendary sound. The Philles Album Collection also includes a bonus disc of B sides, many available on CD for the very first time and featuring material not issued since originally released on 45!

Amazon has a placeholder page for it:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005BSCQPI/?tag=imwan-20

But it can't yet be pre-ordered, and since we're almost in August, I assume the final release date of this box set has been pushed back yet again.

Hmm so the Essential comp is basically just a condensed version of Back to Mono? Pass.

On the other hand, despite how beautiful the box set looks, there is a TON of duplication in there. I wonder how it will be priced? Personally, if Essential is remastered by Vic Anesini, I'm in. Back To Mono left a lot to be desired sonically.

I might get this, as I never delved into Spector's "Wall of sound" era.

Just got a pre-release of the Essential from Sony/Legacy and YES it is mastered by Vic Anesini. It sounds AMAZING. I, for one, never really thought the original Back to Mono box sounded that great...a whole lot of midrange and not much else. In comparison, this new set sounds bright and full.

Plus, I'm hearing things I've never heard in other versions. "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" is an excellent example - HUGE improvement. It's like a layer of dust has been scraped off these masters.

Thanks for this review. I'll try to pick one up.
