With that put forth, I do say Yes, it does sound slightly different and better. Like the 3D mentioned, more open than ever. Love this box, the demos are fantastic, especially the 2nd disc. And the book is unbelieveable, you can go to it many of a time and still have so much to go through. Rick A.

The books with all the recent Who Re-issues both on CD and DVD have been very generous with information and facts. I agree Rick.

I heard Love Reign O'er Me last night in a 7-11. Made me think of this remaster.

Question: How does the 5.1 mix sound? If it is stupendous, I might plunk down for the set. Anyone have a perspective to share?
Thanks.

Thanks. I thought it sounded great, but I'm no audiophile, just a geek with a DVD player that does 5.1.

Thanks. Definitely not stupendous. Its a curiosity and fine for hard core fans of the Who and surround fans but not demo quality Surround. The Who and this album should sound majestic in Surround but this mix sounds hollow and wierd in places. Not worth spending the big $$$ just for that disc. If you want the book and the demo's, then its worth paying the big price.

When it comes to the 2-CD deluxe edition, has anybody ever heard why they decided to end disc one with "Drowned" instead of "Bell Boy"? It doesn't make any sense. Side three of the original LP ends with "Bell Boy." There is plenty of room on disc one to fit in "Bell Boy," so that wasn't the issue. Very odd decision.
Whether it's the 1996 remixed CD's or moving "Bell Boy" to disc two when it should be kept on disc one so that sides one and two can play back on one CD, I just hate how The Who keeps rewriting it's history. These are classic albums of immense historical value, and they should be kept as close to the original product as possible.
I have burned a couple of CD-R's to resequence the songs so that I can listen to the album the way it was meant to be heard. I don't have a multi-disc CD player.

I'm confused. Did they play around with the track sequence on the super deluxe edition? Or was it the remaster?

Some clarification: The 1996 remix of Quadrophenia features sides one and two on disc one, and sides three and four on disc two: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000002P1P/?tag=imwan-20The 2011, 2-CD deluxe edition remaster (of the 1996 remix) features sides one, two and most of side three on disc one, and part of side three, all of side four and bonus tracks on disc two: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005DMNS4A/?tag=imwan-20What is puzzling when it comes to the 2011 release is why "Bell Boy" wasn't included on disc one (as it officially ends side three of the LP) despite the fact that there is plenty of disc space for its inclusion. I can understand why all of side three wasn't put on disc two because they needed room for the bonus tracks. It's almost like a record company oversight or something.

Okay, gotcha. I don't have either of those versions, so I didn't understand.
Yeah, why would they split side three in half when there was space for all of it on disc one?
Hmmm...?

It might have been a Pete thing. I remember many years ago, in the 1980s before the first Quadrophenia CD came out that he was actually thinking of editing down some songs in order to get the entire album onto on disc. Yeeesh! That would have been beyond awful.

I'm Quad crazy. I have the super deluxe set but also have ordered the upcoming Japanese SHM-CD release.

Look for a young Alan Moore's cameo in the Roddam film.

Am curious if listening to a hi-res digital transfer of it adds anything (talking about stereo not 5.1 btw). Both use a new transfer of the original mix (rather than the '96 remix that is in the new Deluxe versions) if I recall correctly; not sure if these use the same source or what though.

A Quadrophenia documentary will apparently premiere at a UK film festival next month. I'm not finding much more about it than can be read at the link below. Pete and Roger apparently cooperated with the filmmakers, but it doesn't appear to be a Who production. Hopefully this will eventually be available on DVD, and will provide actual substance than stories about what drugs were being used by whom. (Note that the Keith Moon/Cow Palace story will apparently morph again to where it will be elephant tranquilizers that did Keith in that night--Pete had previously claimed it was monkey tranquilizers. Either way, Tony Fletcher's far more reliable Moon biography states that the drug in question was, in fact, angel dust, While perhaps the only worthwhile use for PCP was as an animal anesthetic, it's unclear how widespread it was used by vererinary purposes, it's not used for that at all anymore. But it makes a better story to say that Keith Moon took gorilla tranquilizers, and an even better story that that to say he took elephant tranquilizers. The bottom line is that I hope that this isn't one of those lurid, "Behind The Music"-style documentaries.) http://sheffdocfest.com/films/show/5262Quote: Pete Townshend leads us on a trip back to the early 1970s, and the making of the rock opera Quadrophenia. Featuring Jimmy the Mod, a double schizophrenic, reflecting the personalities of all four Who members, the making of the album was fraught, as Roger Daltry, and other contemporaries vividly testify. A workaholic focused with laser intensity on his vision, Townshend’s stress levels spiked when his producer’s heroin habit became all consuming. A range of fascinating anecdotes help bring to life the album’s subject: the mod era of the early 1960s, where style prevailed over substance. The project’s completion hardly brought the relief it should have, as the band immediately set off on a disastrous American tour, featuring Keith Moon on elephant tranquilizers. Nevertheless, Quadrophenia was critically acclaimed, and Townshend looks back with pride: “What is interesting about this album was it kind of worked,” he says. “We never really ever made a truly great album again.”
