The London American Label Year By Year: 1960

Product Description
The London-American label was the prime UK outlet for US hits in the 1950s and 1960s, introducing the British public to Bill Haley, Chuck Berry, the Drifters, Eddie Cochran, Bobby Darin, Little Richard, Roy Orbison, Pat Boone and countless others.

For those who grew up on a musical diet of London-American releases - and also for those who simply enjoy great 20th century American music - Ace debuts the first of a series of at least 15 year-by-year overviews of the legendary black and silver (and, before that, black and gold) label - starting with one of its halcyon years, 1960.

Tracks for the series have been carefully chosen to reflect the diversity of its output, and concentrating on recordings that do not appear on other Ace compilations.

All tracks are presented in glorious mono - the way that you first heard and bought them on London at the time of their release. Ace have also used - wherever possible - the original London tapes for authenticity.

Many countries apart from the UK had a London American label - for example Canada and Australia. Thus this series has international appeal too.

Most tracks were US or UK hits. The rest are such a familiar part of the DNA of American music that they feel as though they were anyway.

1. Let It Rock - Chuck Berry
2. Three Steps To Heaven - Eddie Cochran
3. Wishful Thinking - Wynn Stewart
4. Kommotion - Duane Eddy
5. Blue Angel - Roy Orbison
6. Mystery Train - Vernon Taylor

16. Judy - Teddy Redell
17. Save The Last Dance For Me - The Drifters
18. Hey Little One - Dorsey Burnette
19. Lovey - The Clovers
20. Somebody To Love - Bobby Darin
21. I've Been Loved Before - Shirley & Lee

Product Description
The second volume in Ace's most talked about new series in some time carries you further into the 1960s with another fantastic selection of US and UK hits, flops and flips that all saw their first UK release on the famous silver and black logo of London-American.

1961's 28 tracks include 20 US Hot 100 hits, 14 of which also made the UK Top 50. Importantly - and for Ace's regular customers especially - only one of the 28 has ever been released on Ace CD previously.

All of London's big hitmakers of the time are represented and all tracks are again presented in glorious mono - exactly as they were heard on the original 45s.

Wherever possible, the original London tapes were transferred and digitised, to preserve maximum authenticity. More than 80% of the tracks you hear here are taken from those tapes.

Product Description
Ace's highly acclaimed year-by year overview of the great American music that came out in the UK (and elsewhere) on the London label continues apace.

The contents of the 1962 volume embrace teen, country, early soul, R&B, rock'n'roll, instrumentals and comedy and accurately sum up the label's entire output for that year (166 singles in total). Many of the era's biggest names are featured, and several of the biggest hits.

The tracks also demonstrate how American music was adapting itself to the demise of rock`n'roll in the pre-Beatlemania years in diverse ways.

Of the 28 tracks, only four have previously been released on Ace. Additionally, 18 of the tracks are presented directly from the same tapes that were used to manufacture the original London 45s.

This is sure to please everyone who bought the previous two volumes. The next volume to be issued later this year, will be Ace's first backward dip as we turn the spotlight onto 1959.

Product Description
The latest volume in this critically acclaimed and best selling series moves us backwards, for the first time, into the 1950s and offers another stunning cross-section of hits, flips, flops and rarities that found their way across the Atlantic ocean, for the first time, via the London American label.

With most tracks specially chosen to complement, rather than duplicate, existing Ace CDs, it's a pleasure to note that only two of the 28 cuts can be found elsewhere in the Ace catalogue.

As always, Ace's selection is laden with big names of the era and with big Hot 100 hits, some of which actually found their way into the UK Top 40 too. Iconic US labels that this collection draws on include Chess, Sun, Atlantic, Big Top, Ace (MS), Specialty, Jamie and many more.

In keeping with Ace's mission statement to master from the original tapes that were used to manufacture the London 45s and 78s, wherever they still exist, 20 of the tracks here were sourced from London tapes. The sound you hear here is exactly as you heard it then!

2011 will bring three more releases in this series, from 1963, 1958 and 1957, each one laden with more collectors' gold from the greatest ever UK home of classic American music.

2. Sermonette - Della Reese
3. You Went Back On Your Word - Clyde McPhatter
4. Here Comes Summer - Jerry Keller

Product Description
After Ace's trip back to 1959 for the most recent edition of "London-American Year By Year", Ave move forward once again into the 1960s and arrive at 1963.

Although a general upsurge of interest in UK-created pop was already beginning to take hold of the world as `63 dawned, the UK still generally looked towards the USA for musical inspiration. "London-American Year By Year `63" offers the usual impeccable cross-section of the sounds and styles that were happening Stateside, just as Beatlemania was preparing to dominate the world and change the face of popular music forever.

Nearly 20 of the 28 featured tracks made the US Hot 100. Only four of these have previously appeared elsewhere on Ace. More than 75% of the tracks featured are sourced from the tapes that were used to manufacture the original London 45s, too.

Big UK hits from the likes of the Ronettes, the Crystals, Roy Orbison and Del Shannon help to remind even the most casual listener why the London-American imprint was and remains so revered among record buyers of the day and thereafter.

8. Walk Right In - The Moments
9. Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah - Bob B Soxx & The Blue Jeans

The London American Label Year By Year: 1958
June 27, 2011

Product Description
Our London American label series now winds the clock back to 1958 - a vintage year for all forms of popular music, and one in which many Hall Of Fame classics made their worldwide debut.

If you lived in the UK, the vast majority of those classics would have found their way into your collection via the London label, the first port of call for all rock 'n' roll fans with seven shillings and six pence in their pockets and an urge to exchange it for vinyl.

As with our previous best-selling volumes, a mix of the label's biggest hits and best 45s are assembled here to give an overview of the wealth of musical riches that London offered for sale that year.

Given how many singles that were released on London are already available on Ace CDs, you might think it would be a tough task to find another couple of examples of the label's catalogue to represent this golden year. But nothing is beyond our compilers and, of the 28 tracks featured, only one is currently available elsewhere in this form, on an Ace CD (it's also worth noting that more than a dozen of the tracks have never been legitimately reissued on CD).

We've also taken the opportunity to correct a couple of audio errors that have crept into earlier Ace CDs, and have been able to use the original London 45 tapes on more than 20 of the 28 tracks.

As always, the audio delight is accompanied by a jam-packed booklet featuring a label shot of every featured 45 or 78 and annotation and assorted ephemera.

1. Cannonball - Duane Eddy, His Twangy Guitar & The Rebels
2. Get A Job - The Mills Brothers
3. Just A Dream - Jimmy Clanton & His Rockets
4. Break-Up - Jerry Lee Lewis
5. A Wonderful Time Up There - Pat Boone
6. Hang Up My Rock 'N' Roll Shoes - Chuck Willis
7. Lend Me Your Comb - Carl Perkins
8. Sweet Little Rock And Roll - Chuck Berry
9. Margaret - The Royal Holidays
10. Summertime Blues - Eddie Cochran
11. Big Guitar - Frank De Rosa & The D Men
12. It's Only Make Believe - Jimmy Starr
13. Wait A Minute - Jo Ann Campbell
14. Daddy Lolo - Ganim's Asia Minors
15. The Shadow Knows - The Coasters
16. Ooh! My Soul - Little Richard
17. The Freeze - Tony & Joe
18. Come What May - Clyde McPhatter
19. The Secret - The Gainors
20. Tootsie - Carl McVoy
21. Splish Splash - Bobby Darin
22. The Greasy Spoon - Billy & Lillie
23. Geraldine - Jack Scott & The Chantones
24. The Day The Rains Came - Jane Morgan
25. Guess Things Happen That Way - Johnny Cash & The Tennessee Two
26. Moonlight Bay - The Drifters
