[2012-11-19] Marvin Gaye "Trouble Man" 40th Anniversary Expanded Edition (Hip-O Select)

Last week Music Tap reported that Hip-O-select was releasing an expanded version of Marvin Gaye's "Trouble Man" soundtrack in November. Does anybody have any further details on this? IMHO it is the best of the big three blaxploitation soundtracks ("Shaft"and "Super Fly" being the other two) and has been long overdue for such treatment.

Well, we inch closer to having some sort of information on this reissue. Although Hip-O-select itself doesn't have it up on their site, Amazon now lists it as a November 13, 2012 release, with a price tag of about $28.00. No details on what might be on the reissue, though the price tag hints to me that it is a 2 CD package. A Google search lead me to some other site where the poster said the reissue would include the remastered soundtrack itself, some bonus material and the actual movie soundtrack. No other specifics (of course). Considering this was Marvin's big venture into the jazz world (God know CTI loved it considering the number of cover versions they released in the early 70s), I would have thought there would be a bigger to-do about it. I need this release date to be real, as I'll either need celebratory or soul soothing music after the 6th. This will work either way. "Taxes,Death & Trouble" indeed...

The set will contain the original LP version, alternate versions of the LP songs and...the actual soundtrack itself which is different from the LP. with this release, Motown has completed issuing deluxe editions on all of Marvin Gaye's post-"What's Going On" studio catalog. Kudos...now on to Stevie Wonder's catalog.

Is that comment about Stevie Wonder's catalog speculation, or based on knowledge of Hip-O's plans?

More just wishful thinking than anything else. But you do have to wonder why Motown has avoided remastering his catalog. Contractual reasons? I don't know. But aside from the basic remastering, there is so much you could do with it From what I've read, the early 70s stuff (Music of My Mind, Talking Book, etc.) up to the time of his car wreck seems to all be of a piece, with the same collaborators, backing musicians, etc. Put all that material out in a single 6 or 7 cd Immersion edition. Emphasis the continuity of the period, provide early versions, alternate takes, etc. That run matches up to anybody else's catalog and should be recognized as such.

I like the idea of an Immersion box set with all unreleased content from that era, but more likely we'll eventually see deluxe editions of those classic albums. If they ever see the light of day, I'm hoping for 3-4 disc sets of each album: remastered album, disc of rarities, live disc from that year, DVD with any kind of video footage, and maybe surround sound mixes. Is that too much to ask?

Obsessive Ross scholars/historians such as myself do not consider the 1978 patiche known as ROSS a bona fide studio LP worthy of being considered part of the core catalog. It's no more than a compilation thrown together to keep her name in the marketplace because she wouldn't be releasing an album in '78; so consuming was the filming of THE WIZ. I understand there are many who weren't born back then that have been screaming for its release, but as it stands you can already create your own CD of it by utilizing past Hip-O deluxe editions; all the songs are out there (with the exception of the re-recorded "Where Did We Go Wrong"). This was done intentionally - that's why most of the songs from ROSS appear on the deluxe edition of 'diana' (see Disc Two - "Diana Dance"). Though I'm sure it will see eventual release, my thoughts are mirrored by many at UMe.

But I'll never stop wanting a CD of the original release (supplemented, of course, with original, extended and single versions where they exist) because I played the hell out this LP back in the day and because it's the only DR album (proper or not) that has never been issued on CD. Most importantly, I need it as an important souvenir from my Close Encounter of the Diva Kind... surely you can feel my pain?

I always though that cover was kinda cool, too.

Yeah, I feel your pain. (lol) Besides, who would I be to ignore an additional Hip-O deluxe edition? That album is just a hard one to swallow, but I'd be remiss if I didn't say I spent a very chilly morning in my car waiting for Tower Records to open on the day of its release. I also saw that tour when it came to the Universal Amphitheater (Los Angeles), and the LP came up in a conversation I had with Miss Ross a few years back (she says it was a busy year and hardly remembers its construction). AND yes - apologies to all for the hijacking. Marvin always said he had to play second-fiddle to Diana at Motown. Some things never change.

Nice review djej, although I'll quibble about the sentence "The soundtrack is probably more well-known than the film it provided the soundtrack to...". 'Trouble Man' (the movie) actually did brisk business for a B-flick, and is beloved just as much today in the inner-city communities that grew up with it. Naturally, if you lived in White suburbia (as I did), this film was not in your purview and you had to be hip enough to seek out a theater that screened it. The soundtrack STILL plays second fiddle to the movie today.
