“I Am Now”

Born on the British Virgin island of Tortola in 1942, two-time Grammy Nominee Jon Lucien, grew up playing in his fathers Latin band. In 1961 he relocated to New York to make a name for himself.

After years of struggling playing the wedding circuit, a chance encounter in 1969 with an RCA executive gave Jon Lucien the opportunity to audition, the result being 3 albums released on RCA Records. In 1970 Jon Lucien released his debut offering, I AM NOW, now lovingly repackaged and digitally re-mastered on BBR.
In the past, his smooth baritone voice drew comparisons to greats like Nat King Cole and Lou Rawls, but during almost 30 years of recording and performing, Jon Lucien cultivated a unique and rich romantic sound all of his own which was difficult to classify but would later became know as Smooth Jazz or more interestingly, Quiet Storm which helps to give an idea of the underlying intensity in Jon Lucien’s work.

With the rise of Acid Jazz in Britain embracing smooth jazz-soul artists like Jon Lucien, his work was sampled and remixed by a whole new generation of performers and producers which led to his earliest albums becoming cult classics and highly sought after by collectors and dealers, sometimes changing hands for obscene amounts of money. BBR is very proud to present this newly re-mastered edition of I AM Now, accompanied by extensive liner notes featuring an interview with Delesa Lucien, widow of the late Jon Lucien, and all original artwork and additional photography provided especially for this project courtesy of Delesa Lucien.
