Huh. Here's what charted that didn't make the cut:

Just The Way You Are
She's Always A Woman
Honesty
Don't Ask Me Why
Sometimes A Fantasy
She's Got A Way
Uptown Girl
An Innocent Man
Leave A Tender Moment Alone
Keeping The Faith
You're Only Human (Second Wind)
Modern Woman
This Is the Time
Downeaster "Alexa"
That's Not Her Style
And So It Goes

I can see the last three not being included (and some of those that barely cracked the Top 40 like, say, "Sometimes A Fantasy"), but some of these omissions are just odd. "Just The Way You Are" was the biggest hit off of The Stranger, so that one's a puzzler. "Don't Ask Me Why", "Honesty" and "She's Got A Way" all charted higher than "Only The Good Die Young" (not to mention "She's Always A Woman" off the same album), and "Uptown Girl", "Only Human" and "Modern Woman" all broke the Top 10 -- hell, "Uptown Girl" charted higher than "Tell Her About It" if I remember correctly. And "Everybody Loves You Now" never charted at all.

So I find this track listing rather curious.

"Tell Her About It" went to #1.

Interesting. In Cashbox, "Uptown Girl" went to #1 and "Tell Her About It" went to #3. In Billboard that was reversed.

Me thinks this should called "Some more hits and some"

What's really odd is some of these are just album tracks! There still isn't an accurate Joel comp-even the 2 CD comps suck, always missing hits. A chance to fix things with The Essential Billy Joel 3.0 was a nother failure.
This comp is obviously for the holidays and useless to any of us. Wonder if it has new mastering not that I'd be interested at all.

Every track listed was released as a single except "Everybody Loves You Now". That's the only album track.

"Everybody Loves You Now" and "New York State Of Mind" were not hits. They did not chart-ever.
Also, there's wayyyyyyy more missing chart singles. I looked these up in my Billboard book, so here's what is missing including what you listed...I think I got them all...

Worse Comes To Worst (#80 1974)
Tarvelin' Prayer (#77 1974)
Just The Way You Are (#3 1977)
She's Always A Woman (#17 1978)
Honesty (#24 1979)
Don't Ask Me Why (#19 1980)
Sometimes A Fantasy (#36 1980)
She's Got A Way (live) (#23 1981)
Goddnight Saigon (#56 1983)
Uptown Girl (#3 1983)
An Innocent Man (#10 1984)
Leave A Tender Moment Alone (#27 1984)
Keeping The Faith (#18 1984)
You're Only Human (Second Wind) (#9 1985)
The Night Is Still Young (#34 1985)
Modern Woman (#10 1986)
This Is the Time (# 18 1986)
Baby Grand (#75 1987)
Downeaster "Alexa" (#57 1990)
That's Not Her Style (#77 1990)
And So It Goes (#37 1990)
All Shook Up (#92 1992)
All About Soul (#29 1993)
Lullabye (Goodnight, My Angel) (#77 1994)
To Make You Feel My Love (#50 1997)

I think a 3CD best-of could include all charting singles as well as Album Rock and AC hits that did not chart as singles too.

Ah, I missed that "New York State Of Mind" was on there. Yeah, my listing was what charted in Cashbox... and only what I actually have, so none of the stuff after Storm Front got included.

Ted Jensen recently remastered Billy's entire catalog so this will probably be from those masters.

Has there ever been a US single disc Billy Joel comp career spanning like this? I don't remember one. The only single disc I recall was Greatest Hits Vol. III which was only from 1986-97.

I can't believe they didn't include "Just The Way You Are" on this. Joel had previous hits but it was always my impression that this was the song that really put him on the map where the mainstream public was concerned.

Maybe they're planning a Volume II.

If your idea of "recent" is 1998.

Yeah, I'd have to think this has new mastering. Who mastered the Stranger re-release?

Ted Jensen. I think that one may have passed the point of what was appropriate for the music. It was really pumped up.

He remastered them all again this year.

The forthcoming Audio Fidelity gold version is mastered from Paul's personal cassette dub. And their mastering engineer is going to give it the "breath of life," you watch! :yay:

I'd have considered getting this if they'd combined it with Chicago and Foreigner best-ofs.
