On November 29, Britain's Esoteric label will release an expanded 2-CD edition of "Alive and Well-Recorded in Paris", the final album by Soft Machine(who by that point had no original members and had evolved into a fusion band). In truth, the album was a hybrid live/studio effort. Four shows were recorded in Paris. The group's equipment was late in arriving, so the first night found the group playing on borrowed instruments & equipment, ruling out the use of recordings from that night. As for the three remaining nights, the group's determination to create a live album of all-new compositions meant that the recordings did not yield enough to fill an album. The album was filled out with a studio track,a programmed, euro-disco flavored composition "Soft Space" by keyboardist Karl Jenkins. Also, the group's dissatisfaction with the recording quality of the Paris concerts resulted in the group re-performing most of the solos in the studio. The new 2-CD edition adds previously unreleased concert recordings from Paris, including renditions of tracks from their previous album "Softs", and the single version of "Soft Space"("Soft Space Part 1" & "Soft Space Part 2"). The previously unreleased concert recordings have been remixed from the original multitracks. To date, these are the only Soft Machine multitracks that have ever been located.
