Lost Arthur Lee and Love album 'Black Beauty' to be released June 7

A previously unreleased 1973 album by influential Los Angeles psychedelic soul band Arthur Lee and Love will surface belatedly on June 7 as the initial release from a new boutique reissue label, High Moon Records.

Lee had planned to put “Black Beauty” out on his Buffalo Records label, but the company folded before it came out and the tracks were shelved. High Moon will release the 10 tracks originally planned to be on the album along with bonus tracks, new liner notes and previously unpublished photos from the period.

Rolling Stone writer David Fricke wrote in a guide to the band’s bootleg recordings, “’Black Beauty’ might have been received as a strong comeback for Lee, a turn to steamy R&B with heavy-guitar punch – if it had come out.”

“Black Beauty” was planned as a follow-up to Lee’s 1972 solo album “Vindicator”
and featured the first all-black lineup for the previously integrated group, which first hit the charts in 1966 with the singles “7 And 7 Is” and “My Little Red Book” and created the psychedelic era classic “Forever Changes” album in 1968.

New York-based High Moon plans to specialize in rare or previously unreleased material, and in a statement with the announcement of the first release, label president George Baer Wallace said of “Black Beauty”: “It is that rarest of rock artifacts: a never-before-released, full-length studio album, from an undisputed musical genius.”

On June 7, High Moon Records–the new boutique reissue label–will launch with ‘Black Beauty,’ the never-before-released masterpiece by Arthur Lee’s legendary psychedelic rock band Love. Set for release on CD, vinyl, and digitally, ‘Black Beauty’ contains all ten original songs recorded in 1973 as well as rare bonus tracks, beautiful packaging with detailed liner notes by Ben Edmonds and never-before-seen photographs. The album was re-mastered by GRAMMY-winner Dan Hersch (Ramones, Alice Cooper).
Love is widely considered one of the most influential bands of the psychedelic era, and ‘Black Beauty’ has long represented the Holy Grail for Love enthusiasts. Shelved shortly after its completion when Lee’s then-label Buffalo Records folded, ‘Black Beauty’ was previously available only as a low quality bootleg. David Fricke wrote about the album in his guide to Arthur Lee and Love bootlegs for Rolling Stone: “Black Beauty might have been received as a strong comeback for Lee, a turn to steamy R with heavy-guitar punch — if it had come out.”

‘Black Beauty’ is the missing link in a catalog that also includes ‘Forever Changes,’ the classic 1967 Love album the New York Times called “one of the most affecting and beguiling albums of all time.” It features Lee’s first all-black lineup and marked his return to the studio after his 1972 solo debut ‘Vindicator’ for A Records.

I almost forgot about this.

It has been delayed to an undetermined date, but it is coming.......

There's still no information on when this is actually coming out, but at least Amazon now has a page for it.

We've been busy. Can you tell? Well, it's true.

Gene Clark's Two Sides To Every Story and Love's Black Beauty are all set to start production, tomorrow, after we make a final approval on our tip on, old school custom fit jackets. We had to work on them a bit to get them dead right as Black Beauty comes with a 28 page booklet and Two Sides To Every Story, has a 16 page booklet. All full of never-before-seen photo's and essays by the fantastic Ben Edmunds (Love) and John Einarson (Gene Clark).

We'd rather apologize for keeping you waiting, than apologize for a jacket that bowed from all the goodies inside, or with silly typo's or....

It's been a long road, and as High Moon Records first outing - it's been a very ambitious adventure. Why not just jump in the deep end? Much has been learned, created, setup, and prepared. The future should be a piece of cake.

Beyond belief how it took 3 years just to issue a CD no-one has even heard.
