30th anniversary release of Live Final Marley Performance

Thursday, August 26, 2010
http://www.jamaicaobserver.com/entertai ... ce_7904755

At the time, everyone in Pittsburgh's Stanley Theatre knew they were witnesses to history. Bob Marley stood tall and proud on stage and beckoned them to Get Up, Stand Up, and they responded loudly with "wo yo yo yo". Later they discovered the history they witnessed, was in fact Bob's last performance.

Live Forever encapsulates the pure energy of that fateful performance by Jamaica's most legendary son. The original live recording, captured on tape by Marley's engineer Dennis Thompson, has been lovingly preserved and remastered for the 30th anniversary album release exclusively in the Caribbean. Adding to the distinctiveness of the collection-worthy album, is the special eco-friendly packaging.

Image

Bob had ascended to the pinnacle of his career when he took the stage in Pittsburgh; he had just completed a successful European run on his Uprising Tour and he had played on sold-out bills in New York's Madison Square Garden; simply put, he had arrived.

Everything about the concert was a reflection of Bob - the superior production, the masterful collection of musicians and the eclectic range of songs emphasising the complexity on the man turned superstar.

As widely respected journalist Patricia Meschino alluded to, the Live Forever album liner notes, "He was an anointed African freedom fighter celebrating an independent Zimbabwe, a visionary reggae emissary, straight from "yard", on Jammin', and an exiled leader inciting the movement of Jah people on Exodus. A compelling ghetto griot, Bob warned of the impending consequences due to the continual marginalisation of the poor on Burning and Looting and Dem Belly Full; he was a purveyor of peace decrying War and insisting on No More Trouble, and a progressive spiritualist glorifying the Natural Mystic. Effectively resolute in his desire to chase those Crazy Baldheads out of town, and in his excoriation of The Heathen, he was also a quintessentially cool roots-rocker, skanking to Carlton and Aston Barrett's deeply-grooved drum and bass cadence on the instrumental break of Rastaman Vibration. An irresistible suitor who coyly asked Is This Love? Bob was also a vulnerable, absolutely riveting romantic in his passionately conveyed rendition of No Woman No Cry.

The album also includes live renditions of: Uprising, Coming In From The Cold, Work, Zion Train, Redemption Song and Could You Be Loved. The entire concert, from his opening song to the final applause, spans the special double CD album.

Live Forever is Bob's last live recording from his final concert. This definitive Marley album, special double CD in eco-friendly packaging is a limited regional release which becomes available through Tuff Gong Distribution on September 23, 2010.

Released exclusively in the Caribbean? I've never heard of such a thing, at least not from a major label like Universal/UMe. If this was a bootleg, of course, but this seems like an odd (and not very financially lucrative) move for Universal. I'm guessing it will eventually be released domestically.

Morgan,

The December 14th release listed at the top of this thread is the domestic American pressing. The article which referred to a Caribbean-only pressing on September 23rd is from before Universal announced that this was going to be released worldwide in December.

A-ha! I need to read things more carefully. Thanks for the clarification.

Are the tracks on the bonus CD from the concert? If not, where are they from?

Maybe it's this......

http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id ... _article=1

The I Know A Place EP collects five tracks Bob Marley & The Wailers recorded with producer Lee "Scratch" Perry. The title track was first issued on the limited edition retrospective One Love in 2001, has been out of print since, and now makes its digital premiere on I Know A Place. "Who Colt The Game" was issued on the bonus disc that accompanied the U.K. edition of One Love and similarly has been out of print; "Smile Jamaica [version]" was culled from the 2001 Expanded Edition of Kaya. And both "Punky Reggae Party" [Jamaican 12" version] in its full "discomix" and the complete recording of "Keep On Moving" hail from the 2001 Exodus Deluxe Edition.

I think that's exactly what it is -- here's the tracklisting from the Best Buy EP:

1. I Know A Place (3:44)
(Bob Marley/Rita Marley)
Produced by Lee Perry

2. Punky Reggae party (Jamaican 12" version) (9:18)
(Bob Marley/Lee Perry)
Produced by Lee Perry

3. Smile Jamiaica (5:03)
(Bob Marley)
Produced by Bob Marley & The Wailers

4) Who Colt The Game (3:14)
(Bob Marley)
Produced by Lee Perry

5) Keep On Moving (6:26)
(Curtis Mayfield/Bob Marley)
Produced by Lee Perry

6. Marley Family Interview (Enhanced Video) (8:42)
Taped September 23, 2010 at The Benedum Center For Performing Arts (formerly Stanley Theater), Pittsburgh, PA
Interview filmed and produced by George Dougherty

I stopped by a Best Buy on the way home and picked this up.....currently listening to disc 2.

Very good concert.....(I know it's been available as bootlegs for a long time, but never got around to hearing it), I'm happy with the sound quality....looking at a few Amazon reviews so far, this is apparently the best it's sounded. The concert is a little more mellow than Babylon By Bus.

Straight 90 minute set. Disc 1 - 49 minutes, disc 2 - 41 minutes.

The packaging is the annoying fold up cardboard setup similar to the Beatles remasters and many others.....had to break out more jewel cases.

The bonus disc is just called bonus disc,.and has the same front cover as the main album. Haven't listened to it yet.

Well worth buying.

I'm not. Highly hyped in the low and high end, IMO. And the EQ applied to the last two tracks in an attempt to match it to the rest of the concert is just headachingly bad.

Might be better than the bootlegs, but...

For me, it'll strictly be a historical document. And on the shelf.

I didn't hear the last 2 songs yet when I typed the above.....those are bad. The high end is a little grating on 2nd listen....but I guess this release is supposed to be more of a document. They weren't thinking "live album" when it was recorded.

That's a bummer. Still waiting for mine to arrive. For me, these "historical document" recordings mean one thing - I'll never listen to them, and I honestly would rather not spend money on them either.

From the liner notes:

Quote:
Dear Fan,

The audio concert you now have in your possession was not initially intended to be released for a live record. As was occasionally the habit, Bob Marley & the Wailers liked to keep soundboard recordings from different nights during their tours for posterity purposes. The bulk of this concert is from one such tape. Unfortunately, during the encore of the concert, the reel to reel soundboard tape ran out. In order to complete this historic show, we needed to go to the secondary source from that night to obtain the last two songs, hence the drop in sonic quality. We hope you understand and that you enjoy the concert as a whole.

It would be nice if that was on the outside of the package.

Indeed. You know what was on the OUTSIDE of the Best Buy edition?

Interesting. What was the "secondary source?" An audience recording?

I still think it's preferable to have the whole concert this way rather than an incomplete concert.

But you're right... they should have stated on the OUTSIDE of the package exactly what you're getting.
