Paul Weller, The Brand New Heavies, Leftfield, The JTQ, Mica Paris, The Young Disciples, Alison Limerick, Max Beesley, Moloko and members of Jamiroquai are just some of the artists that turn up on this celebration of the 21st Birthday of one of the most influential independent labels of the 1990s and beyond. "London Street Soul" is a look at the heavily soul influenced output of Ed Piller and Gilles Peterson's creation. Once Peterson left in 1989 Piller's modernist vision embraced a gritty mix of soul, beats and retro influences learned in clubs such as Talking Loud at Dingwalls, but that at its height not only encompassed world-wide hits, but also ownership of London's Blue Note nightclub - declared by Time Out in 2000 to be the club of the Millennium.

The music on this compilation tells the story of the label from its earliest hits such as the beat-laden `I'm The One' by D-Influence and the Brand New Heavies' `Never Stop' - here in the chart-bothering David Morales 7" mix - through to its recent top 40 hit by Andy Lewis and Paul Weller and on into this year's great hope Twisted Tongue. Along the way we come across the very first production by Leftfied, Sandals' `Profound Gas' which is presented as a previously unreleased 7" mix. Also here are a largely forgotten performance by Brit-soul diva Mica Paris in a wonderful duet with Mr Exe and most of the Young Disciple hooked up Max Beesley in the Subteranneans. Cloud Nine were Mark Brydon's project immediately before the chart-topping Moloko, that fell apart when a sampling problem drove them apart.

The great Acid Jazz acts are all here, The JTQ with Alison Limerick on the modern soul classic `Love Will Keep Us Together', Mother Earth with a Brendan Lynch radio mix of `Jesse', and there are also several lesser-known gems that shine through such as the wonderful `Lovesick' by the Nightrains, the jazzy soul of Pure Wildness and the Sun Ra space soul of the Emperor's New Clothes. Also worth noting is the folk-funk on Jinrai who marked the start of a rebirth of the label in 2001.

The booklet is packed full of rare photographs from the label's archive and an in-depth interview with Ed Piller, as he talks through the tracks on the album. It is the first of a three volume series that will follow with "London Street Beats" and culminate with "London Street Jazz".

The second part of BGP's celebration of Acid Jazz's 21st birthday is an enjoyable ride through a set of high-class 90s beats and grooves.

This collection throws the spotlight on the label's contemporary beat-laden productions. It takes in the sounds of trip-hop, lounge, big beat, jazz-house and features many of the biggest names of those genres applying themselves as remixers or producers.

Acid Jazz was the middle of the maelstrom of dance culture and was responsible for setting up one of the great 90s nightclubs, the Blue Note, in London's Hoxton Square. This collection throws a light on an alternative side of 90s club culture that is distinct from and pop house.

Here are Leftfield producing the Sandals' early single, one of DJ Scruff's earliest works and a true rarity in his mix of Manasseh's `Rasselas'. James Lavelle and Tim Goldsworthy's UNKLE produced and mixed the Emperor's New Clothes, while Paul Weller's producer Brendan Lynch took apart and reconstructed Mother Earth's `Jesse'. Another Paul Weller cohort, the Young Disciples' Marco Nelson, hooked up with actor Max Beesley on the infectious `Last Night Beats'.

The set is completed with some truly stunning work, both as an artist and a remixer, from label-owner Ed Piller under his Introspective Funk Collective title. Trevor Jackson, later of Playgroup, mixes the Emperor's New Clothes' `Unsettled Life - Lesson 2', a down-tempo classic, and Manasseh pops up again with the languid `Souljah'. Big beat is represented by Ceasefire man Derek Dah Large on his remix for JTQ and his own Bloodsuckas cut.

This is the third volume celebrating the Acid Jazz label's 21st anniversary, and this BGP focus on the label's jazz heritage. This compilation, by Dean Rudland, covers all the bases from hard bop through organ grooves, latin rhythms and fast fusion.

This CD gives an alternative view of London's acid jazz club scene, showing where many of the label's bigger acts' influences come from. Artists such as the James Taylor Quartet, the Brand New Heavies and the New Jersey Kings show their love of the Mizell Brothers' fusion. Whilst future TV star Max Beesley, Simon Bartholomew and the obscure but brilliant Ohm take a turn at a more jazz-funk groove.

Others such as the Bukkyleo Quintet and the outstanding Ed Jones Quartet play it in a more acoustic mode. In this they are joined by Snowboy with his Latin take on John Coltrane's `Mr PC'. Looking at jazz from outside these points of view are the Emperors New Clothes with an almost free `Eyes That Burn' and the Filthy Six, Acid Jazz's newest signing, who explore a late 60s early 70s Donald Byrd sound.

The in-depth sleeve notes explain how jazz became so important to a generation of London musicians on the UK soul scene and how they imbued it with a unique British flavour. Also how a Swedish piano teacher spawned a generation of UK organ groups.
