Volume One
Hard Times: The Los Angeles Years 1951-1956

July 5, 2004

Product Description
The first of three Ace anthologies chronicling the songwriting achievements of arguably the two most famous names in rock‘n’roll songwriting, Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. This first volume deals with their early years as (predominantly) rhythm and blues songwriters in Los Angeles, starting with their first recorded compositions by Jimmy Witherspoon and the Robbins and ending just prior to the start of their great successes with the Coasters and Elvis Presley. It also includes the first of their earliest national and international pop successes with the Cheers, Vicki Young and Edith Piaf! Several of the tracks are featured in previously unreleased alternate versions, while many others are being digitised for the first time here. Compiled with the personal assistance and approval of Jerry and Mike, and featuring their commentary on many of the tracks in the sleevenotes, this is a long-overdue Ace salute to two men who, for most, are the alpha and omega of rock‘n’roll songwriting.

Volume Two
On The Horizon 1956-1962

July 10, 2006

Product Description
After a slight delay (the result of one or two licensing problems, now happily surmounted) Ace is delighted to be able to bring you Volume Two in their three volume salute to Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller - widely regarded as the first, and quite probably the greatest of all rock`n’roll songwriters (and probably the only ones to be as famous as the songs they composed).

"On The Horizon" picks up the L & S story from just before their relocation to New York in 1957 through to their early years as one of the leading creative forces in New York Brill Building pop music. It features songs everyone will know (although not always in the versions you might expect to hear) and some that only diehard collectors will be familiar with, by some of the greatest names of their era.

As you would expect, the supersized booklet is crammed with photographs, label shots and copious ephemera. The sleeve notes are by the project’s co-compiler and era expert Mick Patrick - a name that always guarantees a good read - and a man who speaks to Leiber & Stoller on a daily basis, the manager of their publishing companies Randy Poe.

Produced with the co-operation and blessing of Leiber and Stoller themselves, this will be a must for all who already have Volume 1 (CDCHD1010), and even for those who don’t...

1. Love Potion Number Nine - The Clovers
2. Here Comes Henry - Young Jessie
3. One Kiss Led To Another - The Coasters
4. Lucky Lips - Ruth Brown

12. Your Old Lady - The Isley Brothers
13. An Open Fire - Johnny Mathis

Volume Three
Shake 'Em Up And Let 'Em Roll 1963-1970

June 18, 2007

Image

Product Description
The final part of Ace's trilogy in tribute to Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller takes their story up to 1970 and embraces the usual mixture of established classics and terminal obscurities.

The selection demonstrates the ease with which L & S coped with the writing and producing of material that went way beyond the rock`n'roll and R&B with which their names are most indelibly associated - whether that material was uptown soul, girl group, country, latin soul or `adult contemporary'.

As ever, the CD is complemented by a handsomely and copiously illustrated booklet and impeccable sleevenotes from Mick Patrick (with input from Mike Stoller's son, Peter).

As before, the CD has been produced in collaboration with, and with the approval of, the men whose career it salutes. Although it's the last in Ace's series of three, it is by no means the final chapter of a story that goes on to this day and that has involved many more triumphs in the interim.

1. You Can't Love Them All - Solomon Burke
2. Tricky Dicky - Richie Barrett
3. His Kiss - Betty Harris
4. My Heart Said (The Bossa Nova) - Irene Reid
5. Drip Drop - Dion
6. Rat Race - The Drifters
7. Midnight Town, Daybreak City - Roy Hamilton
8. It's So Exciting - The Exciters
9. Down Home Girl - Alvin Robinson
10. Only In America - Jay & The Americans
11. Keep It Up - The Soul Brothers
12. Brother Bill (The Last Clean Shirt) - The Honeyman
13. Jackson - Johnny Cash & June Carter
14. Bull Dog - The Shangri-Las
15. The Gunfighter - Tommy Roe
16. Take It Like A Man - The Walker Brothers
17. Juicy - Willie Bobo
18. I (Who Have Nothing) - Dee Dee Warwick
19. You'll Never Leave Him - Freddie Scott
20. Where's The Girl - Ben E King
21. Flying - Carmen McRae
22. Shake 'Em Up And Let 'Em Roll - Jerry Leiber & The Coasters
23. On Broadway - Jimmy Scott
24. Is That All There Is? - Peggy Lee
