Ref-O-Ree Records was formed in 1968 by legendary song-writer/producer Ted Jarratt. Ted discovered a gifted young arranger named Bob Holmes and they decided that Ref-O-Ree Records would be the outlet for their new and very creative productions.
Their first release was by The Avons, a local girl group that were featured regularly on the television show The Night Train. Their next release was by a young R&B singer named Freddie Waters, who had recorded as a member of The Hy-Tones. The Eddie & Freddie record was a late seventies reunion of the Hy-Tones and shows them moving with the times with a more than credible job of delivering The Funk.
Larry Birdsong, Gene Allison and Roscoe Shelton were all well known recording artists. Wendell Watts recorded only a handful of 45s that now go for a lot of money to collectors of Northern Soul music and Rufus Hunter also only recorded two 45s (both for Ref-O-Ree), an alternate version of his first record is included on this CD.
The Spice Of Life record was a rare production by R&B veteran Robert Riley, and it appears to be their only record. Levert Allison made a rare R&B recording in the late seventies for Jarrett and "Love Is A Wonderful Thing" shows his R&B pipes to be in fine form.
