Product Description
Welcome to the Playlist series. Painstakingly compiled by the artists and the music nuts at Legacy Recordings, these collections truly represent an artists' complete body of work. We've fished through hundreds-thousands-of tracks to cherry pick the perfect playlists. Not just the hits (anyone can find those). The life changing cuts. The out-of-print tracks. The fan favorites everyone loves. The songs that make the artist who they are.

You’ll no doubt enjoy the sound of the beautifully remastered songs on this CD (as opposed to MP3's that contain less information, which translate into compromised sound). But we think the thing you'll appreciate most about this Playlist is that even though you didn't make it, you might wish you did.

Tell you what--I wound up buying the three Dylan "Playlist" comps (one each for the 60's, 70's and 80's) and, frankly, this is the sort of compilation that I wish had been thrown together back in 2007 when Sony was hyping its big phony "Vote For Your Favorite Dylan Tracks For The Career-Spanning Best-Of" promotion. The 60's disc has "Down Along The Cove" and "It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)" (instead of "Blowin' The The Wind" or "Rainy Day Woman #12 & 35"); the 70's disc has "Watching The River Flow" and "Buckets Of Rain"; and the 80's disc has "Foot Of Pride" and the acoustic version of "Most Of The Time" from volume 8 of the Bootleg Series. Very nicely done.

These are the three Bob Dylan compilations that Andrew is referring to:

Any collectors of The Outfield should note that their compilation includes a new track — "California Sun" — which is also slated to be part of the band's forthcoming studio album later this year.

I'm think of picking up an Outfield comp. Should it be the Playlist disc or the Big Innings album?

Jim,

Just based on price, get the Playlist comp. Amazon dropped the price this morning to below $7, about 3 dollars less than the Big Innings comp.

Playlist is more of a straightforward "greatest hits" compilation, while Big Innings makes a couple of rarity detours along the way...

Thanks, guys. I don't need to go too deep, so Playlist should work. I'll probably order through the above Amazon link later this week.

Jim:
IMO as a big Outfield fan (which I am) you should go for Big Innings which is a fantastic comp. It has every hit which Playlist does not and rare tracks which Playlist does not. The remastering and liner notes are excellent.
I'd skip this new comp although it does have a new song, as it's missing hits and has strange album tracks. I'm not sure who it's even targeted at.
This is not to discredit the opinion that was already offered-I just think this new comp makes no sense and is overpriced.

IP,

Thanks for your opinion. You make a good case. I'll consider it strongly before making my decision.

Unfortunately, neither Outfield compilation is truly comprehensive when it comes to "hits" (and I use that term here somewhat loosely)... Playlist omits "Everytime You Cry" from Play Deep and "Winning It All" from Rockeye, Big Innings omits "No Surrender" and "Bangin' On My Heart" from Bangin', and "Going Back" (also from Rockeye) is absent from both CDs.

All of The Outfield's hits are on Big Innings though-they had 8 hit singles and every one is one there. The only chart song missing is "Bangin' On My Heart" a very minor AOR hit, but you are right on that one and the others you mentioned, although none of those were on any charts.
That's why Big Innings, which I'm sure can be found cheaply is the way to go and it has way more songs.
If this new one was $5 I might get it for the new song and thanks for mentioning it was on there-I didn't know that was on the Playlist comp-but it's a silly mix of songs, particularily for the casual fan.
Again-not saying your recommendation was poor, I'd just go the other way.

I'm not recommending one over the other, just trying to point out the differences between the two. FWIW, I haven't actually seen the Playlist package, but I suspect it would have far less artwork, informative liner notes, etc. than Big Innings.

Yeah, go with Big Innings if you want good liner notes. All of the Playlist titles I've seen come in cheap card sleeves. And I agree that Big Innings offers the better overview for casual fans.

I ran across the Romantics CD today, and I was surprised to see it in a jewel box.

J&R had a "2 for $10" sale on these so I picked up Bowling For Soup and Five For Fighting. Both packaged in jewel boxes.

Or was it Five For Bowling and Soup For Fighting? :-o

Jewel boxes... that's a nice surprise. But are there booklets/liner notes to speak of?

The liner notes, such as they are, feature some comments about the Playlist series and the song line-up, repeated from the back cover. Still, an improvement over the standard cardboard packaging.

I don't like it - I mean, they look preferable to a "Super Hits" compilation; but why couldn't they release PROPER best-ofs; with artist involvement, proper liner notes and non-budget-looking artwork?
