For a career-spanning compilation, "Roll With It," one of his biggest hits, is curiously missing.

Wasn't there a Winwood box set in the nineties?

Yes, it was called "the Finer Things". This new set is pointless. Nothing more than a "best of" with no vault material, thanks to some longstanding bitterness towards Island Records founder & former owner Chris Blackwell. It concerns artist and/or publishing royalties rates; rates which Universal Music won't voluntarily increase. This is why Winwood invoked his contractual right to prohibit the release of further vault material by Traffic. We'll only get Winwood's vault material posthumously....and that won't be for many many years, since Mr. Winwood is exceptionally young looking for 62. It certainly helps that he was never self-destructive like Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker & Chris Wood(all of whom had problem with booze or heroin, and these problems killed Wood). Excepting joints and cigars in his younger days, Winwood was, comparatively clean living.

Of course I'll get it. I hope they use the Chronicles remix of "Valerie" that was a Top Ten hit, but I doubt they will.

I'm glad "In The Light Of Day" and tracks from Traffic's "reunion" CD Far From Home are being included.

The Finer Things is a near perfect box of his work through the early 90's. All they needed to do was re-release it with a 5th disc...but NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooo! (Apologies to the estate of John Belushi)

Did you mean "Nine Lives" or "About Time"? I'm pretty sure that "About Time" was a dual disc, but I don't remember "Nine Lives" being one.

Winwood's Japanese papersleeve mini-lp box of his first 4 solo releases or his 3 cd import The Ultimate Collection, which is remastered in 32-bit and has selections spanning his entire career, including the remix of "Valerie" and Roll With It--lol--are probably better investments, if you can find either.

This reminds me a bit of the Richard Thompson box set that came out last year. Fans are already going to have everything on the set and non-fans aren't likely to pony up for a four CD-set. Is there a large enough subset of folks in between for this to make economic sense? I doubt it.

Yeah, it's tough when you already have a boxset out there to come out with another one and add anything new to it.

But the post-1990 stuff WILL be new...to a compilation! This is another typical catalog raping and unnecessary rethinking. The sure-to-be-released-this-century Bee Gees box will be more of the same.

On newswires today:

LOS ANGELES, May 3 /PRNewswire/ — Island Records/UMe will release the
definitive career retrospective of one of the all-time greats of rock ’n’ roll
on June 8, 2010. Entitled Revolutions - The Very Best Of Steve Winwood, it is
a portrait of one of the most influential musicians in rock history, a
singer-songwriter, peerless vocalist, guitarist and keyboard
player.
With tracklistings personally selected by Steve Winwood from his five
decade career, Revolutions - The Very Best Of Steve Winwood will be available
in two high quality formats: a single CD for the casual fan and a four CD
deluxe box set including a 52 page book for the connoisseur, with sleevenotes
by writer Dylan Jones. Also included in the four CD deluxe box set and single
disc is a re-recorded version of "Spanish Dancer."

Taken from his 1980 second solo album "Arc Of A Diver," "Spanish Dancer"
is written by Winwood and Academy Award winning lyricist Will Jennings and has
become a staple of Winwood’s live show. The new version of the song features
a new vocal by Winwood recorded at his home studio on his farm in
Gloucestershire and it is mixed by Grammy Award-winning New York producer and
recording artist Ben Wisch, one of the US’s most in-demand piano
players.
A child prodigy, Winwood first performed live on stage at the tender age
of 8 in his father’s traditional jazz band, and joined the Spencer Davis Group
at 14. His stunning vocal style was compared to Ray Charles. He left Spencer
Davis to form Traffic then later teamed up with Eric Clapton in Blind Faith at
the tail-end of the Sixties. Arguably his biggest successes came with his
solo work from the Seventies
on.
In his teens Winwood played in pick-up bands for touring blues legends
including Muddy Waters, BB King, Chuck Berry, Howlin’ Wolf, John Lee Hooker
and Bo
Diddley.
In a career lasting nearly 50 years he has sold over 50 million albums and
several of his songs have become standards, notably "Gimme Some Lovin’"
(memorably covered in The Blues Brothers film), "Can’t Find My Way Home," "The
Low Spark Of The High Heeled Boys," "Higher Love" and "Roll With It."

He has been awarded multiple Grammy Awards - for "Gimme Some Lovin’" and
"Higher Love" (a US no 1 in ’86)

In 2008, Rolling Stone ranked him number 33 in the 100 Best Singers Of All

Time.
Throughout his career, Steve Winwood has remained an in-demand session
player, and has contributed to landmark albums by a huge array of artists
including Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Joe Cocker, Lou Reed, George Harrison, Toots
& The Maytals, Marianne Faithfull, John Martyn, David Gilmour, Tina Turner,
Billy Joel, James Brown, Etta James, Talk Talk, Paul Weller, and Christina
Aguilera among many
others.
Steve Winwood will perform at Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Festival on June
26 in Chicago followed by a U.S. tour with
Santana.

So, "Roll With It" is on the single disc comp, but not the box set.

Makes sense to me. It's not like it was a big hit or anything...

Now we know who to blame-Steve Winwood, as he picked all the songs himself!

From Anti-Music.com:

Artists should not be allowed to put together their own box sets. Or at the very least, there should be some checks and balances by the record company.

"Uhh, Steve, 'Roll With It' was a number one hit in the US. We're gonna have to put that on the box set, yeah....."

A song like Roll With It most definitely should be on both. Having artist input is one thing, but you do that after the givens are included

They could have added a bonus disc which contains alternative Traffic/Winwood Solo songs or perhaps more Blind Faith out-takes.

There is a brilliant version of Blind Faith performing 'Hey Joe'. Thank god there is a bootleg of that.

I'm a huge Winwood fan but I can't see the point in getting this unless it's on Blue-Ray/DVD-A or contains multiple unreleased tracks(more than the usual 1) featuring Winwood.
