Product Description
Average White Band are widely and rightly regarded as one of the best ever soul and funk bands. Although probably best known for their global hit, the US #1 single ‘Pick Up The Pieces’, this extensive anthology delves back into their musical history, from the early sessions in 1971, right up to the most recent studio album released this millennium. ‘All The Pieces…’ features the band’s entire catalogue of recorded material on a 19CD box set, which includes all of the original studio albums (and ‘spoilers’ ‘Put It Where You Want It’ and ‘Volume VIII’) in mini-vinyl replica wallets, alternate versions and selected mixes, in this 172-track collection. The box set includes the collectable re-packaged debut album ‘Show Your Hand’ - ‘Put It Where You Want It’ – whilst ‘Person To Person’ is packaged as a 2 disc gatefold wallet – to reflect the original 2LP set, ‘Feel No Fret’ is packaged as a gatefold release. The bonus CDs wallet artwork has been created by the legendary John Pasche, who designed the iconic AWB logo. AWB’s repertoire has been a source of inspiration for many R&B acts, who have sampled their material and who cite AWB’s grooves as a major influence. The 52-page booklet includes an 11,000+ word liner note by US musicologist, Justin M. Kantor and includes recent historical recollections undertaken with Alan Gorrie and Hamish Stuart.

Received this yesterday from amazon.co.uk after ordering it at a decent price (everything to include VAT & shipping came to £41.41). The box itself is almost identical in size to the recent Frankie Valli & The 4 Seasons box set.

As I haven’t opened it yet (still haven’t played either the 4 Seasons or the Frankie Valli solo boxes either), I’ll provide more information once I give it a listen (my fingers are crossed that it’s not brick-walled).

BTW – has anyone noticed the cathedral-type echo on the CSNY Box Set recordings? While I love the music (saw them during their ’74 at Bill Graham’s ‘Day on The Green’), the echo reminds me of what was done as part of the 2-CD Allman Brothers Fillmore East Deluxe Edition that came out in that slip-case. It's also really noticeable on the Starbucks Edition with the acoustic tracks. Otherwise; excellent.

Thanks,

BG

I can't wait to hear your thoughts on the sound quality - especially the albums through Cut The Cake. I really feel like those were the worst of the 2009 Edsel remasters, with bad EQ and copious noise reduction applied. Things got better (but still not great) from Soul Searching on. Really curious if this set uses the 2009 remasters at all.

Here's an unboxing video done by Fred Vigdor, AWB's saxophonist:

I always thought these guys were a one or two-hit wonder until I picked up the two-CD Ultimate Groove Collection a few years ago. Great stuff! This set is out of my budget but it's nice to see AWB getting this treatment.

Finally had a chance to start listening to this set. Package-wise, the box is excellent with quality Mini-LP Sleeves including Gatefolds for ‘Person to Person’, ‘Feel No Fret’ & ‘All The Pieces’. All that’s missing are the original Atlantic Logos that were on the Vinyl LPs.

The first disc I’ve played so far is ‘Soul Searching’. After running the tracks through Sound Forge, the Mastering appears to be slightly hot volume-wise but nowhere near the extent of a digital brick-wall. ‘Queen of My Soul’ in particular sounds great. Since my only other reference for that title and the others are the original Vinyl LPs that I purchased during the height of the PVC crisis in the seventies (my copies from Tower were [& still are] horrible, I have to initially rate this as a quality release.

I’ll continue with each disc & update only if I come up with anything else significant. Otherwise; highly recommended.

P.S. … My copy of the Allman Brothers Fillmore East Mega Box just shipped from the U.K.(!!!)
