In watching the preview video on Amazon, it appears that not only has the film been remastered which is a good thing. However, it also appears that some of the music has been redubbed in the studio. If this is the case it sounds like the original is being changed. Am I making the correct conclusions here. How do people feel about art being altered?

My understanding is that only some of the bonus content was being fixed, because it wasn't in good enough shape to be released in the first place. Notice on Santana's Deluxe Edition 2 CD set of his first album, the Woodstock set is included as bonus tracks, sans Evil Ways. Now the Woodstock Edition is coming out and it includes that track since it's been fixed and deemed good enough for release now. I haven't heard of anything being altered that was already released in the original film or the director's cut.

And my wife pointed out that this is a "restoration" not merely a remaster.

Good question. Santana is the only one I've heard this about SO FAR.

Just a couple more, a bass track on one Canned Heat song and Santana re-did some rhythm guitar on Evil Ways. Santana refused to let the song be used as it was. One of the guys who worked on the project has been posting details on another forum.

You do realize both the original film and soundtrack had numerous overdubs and outright replacements. There are some songs on the soundtrack that aren't even from Woodstock. Sea of Madness by CSNY is from the Fillmore East two weeks later. Coming Into Los Angeles by Arlo Guthrie is taken from the Troubadour Club in LA a year later.

I didn't know that, thanks for the info. I'm glad we have Sea of Madness at all. The studio version I've heard is missing a verse or 2.

Now that you menrtion it, I VAGUELY remember thinking that the Coming Into LA in the film was different then the version on the cd.

With all the music they had to choose from when compiling the original Woodstock soundtrack, it really makes you scratch your head as to why they would include performances that had nothing to do with the event.

Btw, anyone know why The Who's set has never been given more attention? I've only heard and seen the few songs that have been officially released. Was this considered a poor performance by The Who? Perhaps taking the stage at 4 a.m. didn't help either the band or the film crew. Oh, and how about C.C.R.? I know they put four songs on the 4 CD box set that came out in the mid-90s, but I've never heard them. The three performances on the bonus feature Untold Stories will be the first proof for me that they were actually on the stage at Woodstock.

I've always enjoyed the bootleg of The Who's full set, especially the moment when Abbie Hoffman grabbed the microphone from Pete. It would appear to be the Woodstock people who are reluctant to include anything besides "See Me, Feel Me" on any of the official festival compilations, as the band did include additional Woodstock material in "The Kids Are Alright".

As for CCR, I've always assumed that any release related to them has reached the public only after extensive litigation between all band mambers and record companies involved.

Check out the notes (linked below) from the new Woodstock 6 CD box set "40 Years On" coming out on Aug. 18.

"It also includes the never-released Woodstock performances of Arlo Guthrie’s “Coming Into Los Angeles” and Mountain’s “Theme For an Imaginary Western,” which were replaced by “better-sounding” recordings from other concerts for the original “Woodstock: 3 Days of Peace and Music” soundtrack."

It doesn't mention if "Sea of Madness" has been replaced by the authentic version or not.
