Maybe the obvious next Hip-O Select Supremes project should/could be a definitive collection of the recordings that the Supremes made between their 1st & 2nd albums when an album was scheduled, partly recorded, then cancelled.

Interesting, Amazon is showing it as an "import".

I'm trying to think of what you could be referring to, Phil. Chronologically, the next sessions in 1963 - which were produced by Clarence Paul - would be songs that made up "The Supremes Sing Country, Western & Pop" LP; an album that didn't see release until two years later in 1965. Or do you mean the 1963 sessions for "The Supremes Sings Ballads & Blues"? I'd definitely go for that.

This new set would have so much more value to someone other than the die-hards if most of its tracks hadn't already appeared Hip-O's "Lost & Found" (albeit in another take). No matter - it's an historical must-buy because it's the beginning of the journey. Secondly, we finally get to hear that classic "Battle Of The Bands" showdown between the Marvelettes vs. the Sups.

I, personally, hope Hip-O takes this deluxe route with the Sups' catalog, as opposed to the three box sets of straight reissues we were supposed to receive during the 50th anniversary last year. I'm also very happy at the fast clip we're receiving Lady Di product. Only 58 more albums to reissue! (smile)

Good lookin' out on this one, Mr. Harris!

This is now listed on Hip-o Select's website. It is listed as "Sold Out", but I don't think it is available to order yet.

SITE PRE-SALE DATE: 3/12/2010
SITE SHIP DATE: 3/26/2010
LIMITED EDITION QUANTITY: 10,000

It’s been 50 years since a group of four teenage girls calling themselves the Primettes nervously auditioned for Berry Gordy at Motown, then Detroit’s new local record company. At first he sent them away, telling Diana, Mary, Florence and Barbara to first graduate high school. They hung around anyway, doing handclaps in sessions, and finally got signed in January 1961 (a few months before graduation). The Primettes were re-named “The Supremes” – but it would be a little while before they became world-renowned superstars.

Meet The Supremes: Expanded Edition, a new 2-CD set from Hipo-Select.com, tells the story of those early years, as the group evolved from a quartet to a trio, doing their best to gain traction at an fast-emerging label. The set features a newly remastered version of the Supremes’ debut album, first issued in 1962, along with rare tracks from their first recording sessions, previously unreleased live shows and much more, including:

On CD for the first time: the original mono version of Meet The Supremes

On CD for the first time in more than 20 years: the stereo mix of the album

A never-before-released live show recorded at the NY’s Apollo Theater in 1962 – the earliest known Supremes live recording

A second unreleased live show, a “Battle of the Stars” from Detroit’s Graystone Ballroom in 1964, only six months before “Where Did Our Love Go” hit No. 1

16 additional studio tracks from their initial recording sessions, all in previously unreleased mixes, many in stereo for the first time

Meet The Supremes: Expanded Edition is presented in a collector’s digi-pak, a “series look” similar to the previous Supremes reissues on Select; it features the rare original 1962 “stools” cover – with the short-lived rectangular Motown logo – while the booklet cover shows the restyled image used for the LP’s stereo reissue in ’65. Inside the 20-page booklet are rare, early photos, an essay by Supremes historian George Solomon, a timeline outlining the group’s beginnings, detailed annotations and recording dates, and another historic first: the first-ever interview with fourth Supreme Barbara Martin, conducted by original Supreme Mary Wilson.

Before their extraordinary run of No. 1 hits, Meet The Supremes introduced Diana, Mary and Flo to the world. This new 2-CD set brings back the newness of that moment and offers a glimpse of what was to come.

Disc 1: Tracks 23-26 previously unreleased
Disc 2: All tracks previously unreleased

Can anybody confirm whether the order link has ever been active from Hip-O's own site, despite the "Sold Out!" tag? I wouldn't mind ordering it from them direct, just for peace of mind...

The Lena Horne link has become active for pre-order...the Supremes are still listed as Sold Out.

That whole "Sold Out" business is a strange practice for Hip-O, but they do it with every release. Once pre-orders begin (within the week for this title), the "Sold Out" sign disappears. It's the same for every title I've ever bought, but I called for verification anyway. Remember, the news was broken here even before artwork was finalized (the leak was even mentioned on twitter), so they're likely playing catch-up.

Hip-O Select has notified those who ordered, that there has been a delay in receiving the discs from the factory, so the shipping date has been postponed.
