Artist: QUICKSILVER MESSENGER SERVICE
Title: Live At The Carousel, 4th April 1968
Label: BEAR RECORDS (UK)
Format: 2CD
Price: $25.00
Catalog #: BEARVP 109CD

from http://www.forcedexposure.com/new/2009mar4.html

"When this recording was made, it was just a few weeks after the release of the self titled debut from Quicksilver Messenger Service. The set included 'The Fool' and 'Light Your Windows' from the debut alongside live favourites 'Who Do You Love,' 'Babe I'm Gonna Leave You' and 'Walkin' Blues.' The second disc, however, is the real pull for Quicksilver fans, as it contains just the one track of the band doing what they do best and what sealed their reputation as a live band. The disc is taken up with 'The Jam,' an extended piece which never outstays its welcome but which underpins the band's musical inventiveness and dexterity."

Is this from the same series we've seen Airplane & Quicksilver concerts in the last year, or is "Bear Records" something new?

Those Airplane and Quicksilver CD's you are referring to are on Charly. Bear Records is a new label for me.

I have this, it is indeed one of the Quicksilver archive recordings that was released last year. It is on Bear Records, but marketed and distributed by Voiceprint.

Sadly, it looks rather better than it is. The idea of a 45 minute QSM jam must seem very appealling to many (it certainly did to me) but this is an indifferent jam that sounds nothing like Quicksilver. For instance, is no trace of Cipolina's trademark guitar sound, which may or may not be because he's playing flute (didn't he play flute as well?). The first disc is decent but unremarkable and whilst the sound quality is fine, the sound level is rather lower than usual.

If you want some live QSM, start with Lost Silver And Gold and follow that up with the bootleg Marin County Cowboys, both of which are infinitely superior to this.

A clue to the quality of this release comes in the title; Quicksilver didn't play the Carousel on April 4th 1968.

I agree, Lost Silver And Gold is good stuff.

Thanks for the review!

I've got another live At The Kabuki Theatre bought a couple of years ago when it first came out.

The sound quality and songs were all good, plus a couple of unusual covers ie The Stones "Not Fade Away" being one that I remember. As it's so long ago since I listened, there was something about the second disc I didn't like.
I have a vague recollection it was because audience were invited to join the chorus on What About Me.

A rubbish moment on an otherwise good historical Quicksilver recording.
