I know we have been fooled before but David Gans has posted the confirmation on his blog and he does not post what he can't confirm. Besides, he's got the box. Here's the post:

Quote:
Winterland ’73 box
March 14th, 2008
I thought they were going to wait til Monday to announce, but it’s up on DeadNet right now - Winterland ‘73: The Complete Recordings!

Poking around a bit, some of the DeadNet links aren’t live yet. There will be a listening party of selected tracks from the set, and there’s a viral video clip with a montage (created by yours truly) of bits from the set and visuals from the cover poster by Emek plus clips from The Grateful Dead Movie, which was shot at Winterland eleven months after this music was made.

I’ve had the nine discs for about a week now, and I am really impressed with the audio restoration and mastering - and of course with the music. This is a terrific run of shows, the groupmind in its prime and new songs happening all over the place.

Rare and different treasures here include the fast “They Love Each Other” and the slow “Loose Lucy,” both of which underwent significant changes before they were taken into the studio (on Jerry’s Reflections and Grateful Dead from the Mars Hotel, respectively). We also get two performances of “To Lay Me Down,” a song I would have been happy to hear many more times than I did.

“Looks Like Rain,” from the middle (Saturday 11/10) show, is just lovely: that classic warm Weir Gibson rhythm guitar tone and technique, and Jerry plays a mournful, straightforward solo that begins as a replica of the pedal steel part he played on the album Ace. The song has not a trace of the Wagnerian bombast that it verged on in later years.

It’s also interesting to note what songs are missing from the setlists: “Bird Song,” “The Other One,” and “He’s Gone” all spring immediately to mind. Not that I am complaining! I don’t have a problem with three complete “Weather Report Suite”s: all hands are on deck, fully engaged with the music they’re making, and you can feel the musical tree shooting new growth. “Big River” is a barn burner all three nights, too.

More notes later. Get on over to DeadNet and see what’s shakin’!

(P.S. That’s my handwritten set list over there. Not sure when I wrote it out on one page like that - and since I only made it to the first and third shows of the run, I must have gotten my information on the 11/10 show from someone else.)

As of this morning the link for more information is still, ahem, dead, but it looks like this is the real thing.
Woo hoo!

Very exciting stuff! I may not have time to get to deadbase to confirm, but I am curious: David's article mentions the 'songs missing from the setlists...' I'm not following what he is saying: these songs were played at the run, but are not on the 'complete' box set, or they were not played at the run?

In any case I will be snatching this up asap...I'm curious what the extras dead.net will be offering.

Thanks for the heads up!

I had the same momentary confusion, had to read the post twice. He's saying the songs were not played during the run. The shows are complete.

This is a very well-regarded run of shows at Winterland in November of 1973. This is the box set that was offered then withdrawn just prior to Rhino leasing the vault. Certainly peak-period GD.
Here are the shows.

Date 11/9/73
One The Promised Land ; Brown Eyed Women ; Me And Bobby McGee ; They Love Each Other ; Black Throated Wind ; Don't Ease Me In ; Mexicali Blues ; Row Jimmy ; The Race Is On ; China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider ; Playing In The Band
Two Here Comes Sunshine ; Me And My Uncle ; To Lay Me Down ; Big River ; Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo ; Greatest Story Ever Told [3:10] > Bertha [6:08] ; Weather Report Suite Prelude [1:20] > Weather Report Suite Part 1 [4:30] > Let It Grow [10:06] > Eyes Of The World [15:#24] > China Doll [5:28] ; Around And Around [4:57] ; Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad [8:08] > Johnny B. Goode [3:01]
Encore Uncle John's Band

Date 11/10/73
One Bertha [6:00] ; Jack Straw [4:40] ; Loser [6:10] ; Looks Like Rain [7:42] ; Deal [4:27] ; Mexicali Blues [3:20] ; Tennessee Jed [7:57] ; El Paso [4:21] ; Brokedown Palace [5:39] ; Beat It On Down The Line [3:13] ; Row Jimmy [8:44] ; Weather Report Suite Prelude [1:33] > Weather Report Suite Part 1 [5:13] > Let It Grow [10:38]
Two Playing In The Band [12:08] > Uncle John's Band [9:26] > Morning Dew [12:34] > Uncle John's Band [2:18] > Playing In The Band [6:48] ; Big River [4:28] ; Stella Blue [8:01] ; Truckin' [13:21] > Wharf Rat [8:39] > Sugar Magnolia [1:58#]
Encore One More Saturday Night
Encore Two Casey Jones

Date 11/11/73
One The Promised Land > Bertha > Greatest Story Ever Told ; Sugaree ; Black Throated Wind ; To Lay Me Down ; El Paso ; Ramble On Rose ; Me And Bobby McGee ; China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider ; Me And My Uncle ; Loose Lucy ; Weather Report Suite Prelude [1:18] > Weather Report Suite Part 1 [4:18] > Let It Grow [8:49]
Two Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo [7:38] ; Big River [5:15] ; Dark Star [31:05] > Mind Left Body Jam [4:10] > Eyes Of The World [12:#54] > China Doll [5:10] ; Sugar Magnolia [10:02]
Encore Uncle John's Band [7:15] ; Johnny B. Goode > And We Bid You Good Night

The 11/10 Playing in the Band sequence is a classic and the Dark Star from the next night ain't too shabby either.

As excited as I am by the release I have to point out that the aborted offer, prior to the leasing of the Vault was $70, pre-shipping. Now that the Vault is under Rhino's watchful eye the price is $100 pre-shipping.

Ordered it anyway. :sigh:

Is this set exclusive to the Dead site, or will it eventually turn up on Amazon etc.?

A lot of people are asking that. In the past sets like this were either exclusive to the site (like the Live Dead Box Set) or were exclusive for several months/a year (like Dick's Picks) but that was when it was GD Merchandise doing the selling. Now that Rhino is in the act I am guessing that it will be in the stores sooner rather than later but probably without the bonus disc.

This is the bonus disc material if that is going to help anyone decide:
Bonus Disc: Cincinnati Gardens, 12/4/73
1. “China Cat Sunflower”
2. “I Know You Rider”
3. “Truckin’”
4. “Stella Blue”
5. “Eyes Of The World”
6. “Space”
7. “Sugar Magnolia”
8. “Goin’ Down The Road Feeling Bad”
9. “Casey Jones”

I'm guessing that is NOT a numbered limited edition like the Fillmore box? Also, what is the release date? I didn't see it listed anywhere?

The "Uncle Johns Band" Encore from 11/9 is not on this release. It was never recorded.I'm surprised that they didn't seek out an audie from the tapers community to try and make it complete.

Right "quantities are limited" is very different than "Limited Edition."

I read somewhere that it will ship "early April" but I can find that anywhere right now.

This message is now posted at the bottom of the Winterland info page:

"The Winterland 1973 box sets are currently in production and we will start getting them to you as soon as we can make sure they’re “just exactly perfect,” which will definitely be before April 30. As always, we will not charge your credit card for Winterland 1973 before shipping it."

I recently picked up one of the DP series recorded in England 1974. What was the English fan and/or critic's take on the Grateful Dead's music? What about the rest of Europe?

I don't think they were too popular with the British press. I don't know about the rest of Europe. I know there are specific sites dedicated to the European deadhead.

Elvis Costello said that seeing them at the Bickershaw Festival in '72 was one of the great live experiences he ever had.

Well, we do know they were sufficiently popular to squeeze out the live triple-album Europe '72.
