Product Description
Welcome to the Playlist series. We've fished through hundreds of tracks to cherry pick the perfect playlists. Not just the hits, but...the life-changing songs. The out-of-print tracks. The fan favorites everyone loves. The songs that make the artists who they are. You'll no doubt enjoy the sound of the beautifully remastered songs on this CD, unlike the compromised sound of an MP3 file.

You might also like the fact that the packages are environmentally-friendly (no plastic, 100% recycled paper). But we think the thing you'll appreciate most about this Playlist is that even though you didn't make it, you might wish you did. This package has been created with the environment in mind. All of the paperboard is 100% recycled and 100% recyclable. Of course, we would prefer that you not throw this package or CD away. We would prefer that you keep it in your collection to enjoy for many years to come! Full liner notes, photos, and more included as a PDF file on this CD. Enjoy!

These are track by track re-issues from Legacy and thus, totally unnecessary. For example, I just bought the "Playlist" list series for Scandal, which turns out to be the the exact track by track version of the recently released VH1 We Love The 80's series Scandal release. The only difference is, is it's a "green" series. no jewel box.

Saw a bunch of these at Costco today. I first thought they were Japanese mini-lp's.

They're not for snotty afficiandos such as us. They're designed for casual buyers to buy as stocking stuffers and usually aren't marketed in music stores per se, hence Costco. They ar of no uses to us but they fill a marketing niche for the labels.

They also, apparently, have a lot of single versions which have never been released before, which will be of some value to people such as completists. I read that the Eddie Money one has a couple of "holy grail" single versions on it...I think "Two Tickets To Paradise" is one of them.

The Eddie Money version is not the same as the VH1 We love the 80's disc, which only had his 80s songs on it of course.

Though those 2 collections are the first (that I am aware of) to include his solid 80's hit Endless Nights, which I can't figure out why was left off of every comp that came out since the late 80's....

By the way, Best Buy has some of these discs and they are around $11.99 which I think is slightly high.

For a CD that's not in a jewel box, I'd go so far as to say $11.99 is unjust enrichment! :naughty:

I think whenever you see the word "playlist" whether on this series or elsewhere, you can pretty much bet they are going after the iPod generation. The assumption (whether correct or not) is that this demographic does not have much want or need for elaborate packaging.

Of course this begs the question, "But don't those people download everything?" Probably, but I think this just shows how desperate the labels are right now. They're throwing anything against the wall to see what will stick, from overpriced deluxe Dylan sets for the hardcore collector to these Playlist discs for those who just want to load the tracks to their mp3 players.

The Hall & Oates PLAYLIST also contains some new-to-CD single mixes and edits. Not sure if any other volumes besides H&O and Eddie Money have rarities; if anybody's in the know, please do tell!

The Rick Springfield entry has some single/video mixes.

The Crash Test Dummies entry has several previously-unreleased tracks, on top of being the only CTD comp on the market.

Maybe I was wrong. It's starting to sound like maybe they're aiming this series to both the iPod folks and the hardcore collectors

Despite the chintzy packaging, the Hall & Oates edition of PLAYLIST includes single mixes of "Don't Change", "I Don't Wanna Lose You", "Kiss On My List", "I Can't Go For That", "Your Imagination", "Adult Education" and "Everything Your Heart Desires", as well as a video mix of "Out Of Touch". For its relative budget price, I was pleased with this release. Vic Anesini did the mastering, and you can find brief liner notes as well as full discographical information for each included track via Adobe if you pop the disc into your pc. (There's also a pathetic discography showing a few albums you can buy from the Sony Music Store, and information on the Playlist series.)

I'd be more than happy to buy other volumes in this series if they contain more new-to-CD tracks. I'll be checking out the next wave of releases...

I have no problem with it if it isn't a direct track by track replica of another release. Eddie Money is like that and I'd be willing to bet that the Rick Springfield one is as well, both from the VH1 We Love The 80's series.

I had a Canadian import Best Of that was basically the same as this one, except this one has a couple of bonus tracks. I bought the new one and sold the other.

Thanks for the information.

Is there a good H&O website that offers this kind of detail (Amazon, etc. aren't much use in terms of single vs. album mixes)? I have a bunch of H&O comps, and it would be nice to have a better sense of what I already own and what I still need to track down.

As I mention above, the Eddie Money ones are different. The playlist disc includes non 80's tracks.

J&R has the entire Playlist series on sale for $4.99 per title. Some new entries, or at least ones I haven't seen before. For Top 40 collectors, the C+C Music Factory comp includes several 45/radio mixes.

At $4.99 a pop, it might be worth a trip to J&R to check 'em out.
