[title]The Many Sides Of Dave Edmunds[/title] is the definitive collection of a career that spans four decades. A true rock n' roll purist, Edmunds has never strayed far from the original rock n' roll sound of the 1950s. His career began in the 1960s as lead guitarist for the band Love Sculpture, before going solo in 1968. Edmunds painstakingly recreated the sound of the 1950's producers from Sun and Chess, often playing all the instruments himself. By the mid 1970s Edmunds' solo career had began to branch out into the formation of the band Rockpile. Although, mainly a live outfit, with Edmunds still writing and recording the albums on his own, their first collaborative effort, 1978's Tracks On Wax 4, became a critically acclaimed hit. Their next album Repeat When Necessary produced the single "Girls Talk," as well as the Top 20 "Queen of Hearts," both major British hits. Throughout the 1980s Edmunds mainly focused on producing other people's music, but returned to the forefront in 1994 with the album Plugged In. The Many Sides Of Dave Edmunds captures the remarkable sound and career of one of rock n' roll's most enduring and popular cult stars.

I don't know if it's the definitive collection, didn't Rhino release a 2 CD anthology?

The Rhino 2-CD comp mentioned by Googa is a more thorough recap of Edmunds' career, drawing from many labels he recorded for over the years. His only real big hit in the US was "I Hear You Knocking" from 1970-71, several years before he became something of an elder statesmen for the new wave. He got a lot of NY radio play on WNEW and LIR/DRE during the 80s.

Yes, that's the one I've got, bought in the early '90s. I thought he might be known in the US for the instrumental, Sabre Dance, as well.

Once you buy a comp I think you'll want more, the lone Rockpile album for starters.
