The Three Dog Night is most likely the Around the World Live from '73, which hasn't been released here domestically. If this is different, I will get this.

I've never heard Around the World Live from '73. I love live at the Forum. Is this similar?

Review by Joe Viglione After six studio albums, beginning in 1969, a single "in concert" disc Captured Live at the Forum, from Los Angeles, September 12, 1969, and the first of many "greatest hits" packages (Golden Biscuits), came the superstar band's ninth album, the double-disc live album from 1973, Around the World With Three Dog Night. Recorded on the tour that supported the 1972 Seven Separate Fools LP, the record label this time gives no indication of the place or date of recording (more cryptic than 1972's Steppenwolf Live), though that album at least informed the listener it was "recorded live at various concerts during early 1970." Around the World With Three Dog Night has most of the major classics in the band's life before the release of "Shambala," "The Show Must Go On," and the group's other four final hit recordings. This is the same crew that created Captured Live at the Forum — the same band lineup, Bill Cooper still engineering, Richard Podolor producing, even photographer Ed Caraeff's work continuing to grace the cover and gatefold. The recording is much clearer than Captured Live at the Forum, and the band is totally on. The Laura Nyro tune "Eli's Coming" is the only duplicate from the previous live LP, and along with the majority of their hits not included on the Forum live album, there's the Ted Myers/Jaiananda song "Going in Circles" from the 1972 film X, Y and Zee, as well as "Midnight Runaway," "Good Feelin' 1957," a Floyd Sneed drum solo, keyboard riffing from Jimmy Greenspoon, and the concluding number written by all seven members of the group, "Jam," which rocks, but is an odd way to end a very good LP from an important Top 40 group. By this time, Three Dog Night had become superstars, and the slick recording and performance reflects that, making the previous disc almost underground by comparison. Gabriel Mekler's production of Steppenwolf Live and Jack Richardson's brilliant presentation of The Guess Who Live at the Paramount were classic "peer" albums from this time period to go along with this effort from producer Richard Podolor. Not the definitive live disc from this group, the sublime "Celebrate" is strangely missing, it does contain 11 of their hit songs and six additional tracks. Would be nice to see it expanded to a double CD with more material and maybe some credits as to where it was recorded. There are some great photos of all of the bandmembers inside, and it does remain a snapshot of this vital hit group before they went in different directions.
Tracks 1 One Man Band 2 Never Been to Spain 3 Going in Circles 4 Family of Man 5 Midnight Runaway 6 Liar 7 Good Feeling (1957) 8 Organ Solo 9 Eli's Coming 10 Joy to the World 11 Black and White 12 Pieces of April 13 Out in the Country 14 Mama Told Me (Not to Come) 15 Drum Solo 16 An Old Fashioned Love Song 17 Jam 1973 LP Dunhill 50138
I really enjoy listening to this LP after all these years. I am partial as Three Dog Night was the first band I got into and still listen to their music today.

I have a really VAGUE memory that I MAY have heard this as a teenager & decided it was too commercial. Not certain, though.

The Three Dog Night Double Live album from 73 really isn't that bad as far as sound goes, it was edited very sloppy though as was most Dunhill record projects. Poor seques in between songs in spots due to them taking songs from various shows and pasting them together. I got so tired of waiting for this on CD that I actually took my pristene copy of an 8 track tape(now before you start laughing hear me out) and transferred it to disc. I know some might think that is crazy, but actually after a very tiny bit of editing myself and then a much needed EQ, it sounds really good. I saw them LIVE during this time and they were one of the tightest bands around and put on a great show. Can't wait for the new CD.

So now you get to hear those mid-song fade-outs and fade-ins in digital clarity?

I was able to splice together the right points of fade in and fade outs and it fits together perfectly and there is no hint of any splicing. You should hear it, it sounds great.

THREE DOG NIGHT: GREATEST HITS LIVE: 8/26/2008 In 1972 Three Dog Night was truly a golden animal. Singers Chuck Negron, Danny Hutton and Cory Wells had already led their group into the Top 20 no less than 14 times since their 1968 debut, earning three #1 Billboard singles along the way. The trio’s uniquely interwoven harmonies and inspired taste in material were obvious reasons why the group sold 50 million albums and enjoyed an enviable string of hits. But there was another factor behind Three Dog Night’s success that many pundits didn’t see: the group’s enormous popularity as a live act.
Onstage, Three Dog Night cut loose with a freewheeling energy that blew audiences away and dwarfed other bands. Crowds responded wildly to their vocal pyrotechnics and sweat-drenched showmanship, allowing them to play huge stadium shows and festivals across the U.S. and abroad. Twice the group attempted to record their stage performances, with mixed results. Captured Live At The Forum (1969) was a critical and commercial success but technically flawed, while 1973’s Around The World With Three Dog Night suffered from the absence of key songs. It seems fair to say that the experience of hearing Three Dog Night soar through hit after hit in concert has never truly been captured before—until this album.
“We did our hits better onstage,” remembers Chuck Negron today. “Live we were three very competitive guys who could outsing anybody. We kind of muscled over the bands we shared the bill with. And we were competitive with each other—Cory and I especially tried to keep taking things up a notch. A lot of the groups out there at that time weren’t entertainers. But we worked our asses off every night . . . ”
The tracks included on this album were recorded during the group’s 1972/’73 world tour, an ambitious jaunt that took them from North America to Europe, Japan and Australia. By that time Three Dog Night had racked up such now-classic hits as “One,” “Easy To Be Hard,” “Celebrate,” “Mama Told Me (Not To Come)” and “Joy To The World”—a list that serves as a reminder of how eclectic their song choices were. In concert they would veer from the frenetic soul-pop energy of “Eli’s Coming” to the seething rock tension of “Liar” and the romantic look into the past “An Old Fashioned Love Song” without losing their focus or momentum.
From 1972 up till 1976, Three Dog Night recorded seven albums. All but one sold over a million copies. During the period of this live recording and beyond, they scored three more million-selling singles, a #1 hit, and nine Top 40 hits—but internal divisions and personal hassles were beginning to take their toll, and the band broke up in 1977.
With the release of these live and previously unreleased tracks, Three Dog Night’s place in pop history becomes clearer. In their touring heyday, Negron, Hutton and Wells lived fast, sang proud and inspired manic adulation in their fans across the planet. If they didn’t bring joy to the whole world, they came amazingly close.

If I remember right (35 years ago....) , the reason I wasn't into this one was songs like THE FAMILY OF MAN & NEVER BEEN TO SPAIN that are a bit on the am radio of the time side. Live at the Forum was a borderline hard rock album & I love it to this day.
I sure wish they'd reconcile with Chick Negron & stop being 2 Dog Night. I would go to see them if all 3 were together.

I'm very surprised that it's showing Chuck Negron as the producer. Leads me to believe that the other guys didn't take an interest in this. After all the current lineup did do a LIVE greatest hits package a few years back but it was 2 Dog Night. I too would like to see the originals back together. As far as the BAND part of the group, a couple of them have passed away but those left could still pull it off. BUT as with most groups from back in the day, I don't think it will happen.

They had a BIG falling out from Negron's addiction. LAST TIME I CHECKED (his book & dvd a couple years back) Negron was sober, Christian & touring doing TDN material. The PBS TDN concert with the orchestra a few years back just didn't cut it with the bass player trying but not succeeding on the high vocal parts.

It's the original bass players(Joe Schermie & his replacement Jack Ryland) who have passed away. In the case of Schermie, it was because of heart problems. 6 of the 7 original Three Dog Night members are still alive.

Well, there you go, let's have a reunion! Wishful thinking but with the bitter falling out with the group that Chuck had I doubt it will happen.

Luckily, I only bought a handful of 8 tracks back in those days and concentrated on LPs.
