From Blabbermouth.net:

According to a posting at Deep-Purple.net, DEEP PURPLE's multi-track tapes for the 1974 classic album "Stormbringer" have been located. The tapes are said to be in "excellent" condition and contain, among other things, three different vocals for "Soldier of Fortune", a powerful instrumental version of "Highball Shooter" and singer David Coverdale's original backwards bit for the start of the title track. A productive day at Abbey Road on October 30 saw ex-PURPLE bassist/vocalist Glenn Hughes (in between his Dudley and Northampton solo shows) get stuck into the "Stormbringer" tapes as if he'd left the studio just the week before rather than thirty-plus years ago. "The material sounded astonishing; the studio recording quality is a lot lot better than 'Burn' — much more defined, and the one thing everyone who came into the studio said during the day is that it was hard to believe the material was from 1974 — it sounded so contemporary," reads a posting on the site. "Glenn really wanted to do 'Holy Man' and started out on that, but he soon got into the vibe and in all five songs were done during a long session. The results sound really excellent and there will be a few surprises for fans of this particular album to pick up on, as Glenn brought up some new vocal lines and other unheard bits and bobs, as well as emphasizing different aspects of the material.

"I left the engineer finishing the remaster of the original album, before copying the quad masters. We'll then have a look at timings and work out a final track list for the new edition. The photograph here shows EMI's catalogue manager Nigel Reeve, Glenn, and Abbey Road's remastering engineer Peter Mew. Also shown is the original tape box for the quarter inch album production master for the album."

2009 special digitally remastered and expanded two disc (CD + PAL/Region 0 DVD) 35th anniversary edition of the veteran British Hard Rockers' 1974 album comes with a crisp new remaster, and a host of collectable extras. The CD features the original album remastered, plus a clutch of tracks remixed by Glenn Hughes at Abbey Road Studios especially for this release. The DVD contains the original Quad mix of the album presented in both 5.1 surround sound and stereo. Stormbringer was the ninth studio album by Deep Purple, originally released in November 1974. (and featuring the Mark 3 line-up of the band that included David Coverdale on vocals and Glenn Hughes on bass) this album, much more prominently featured the soul and funk elements that were only hinted at on previous album Burn. Wow-I can't believe I found this. I posted this almost a year ago. Not sure if there's different info in here or not, but stay away from the Friday releases-these next remasters are right from Deep Purple's vaults and follow up the awesome "Burn" remaster from a few years back.

From Blabbermouth.net (this is not to be confused with whatever remaster Friday Music recently put out-this has the band's involvement):

According to the Deep Purple Appreciation Society, it looks like the wheels are turning again on the DEEP PURPLE "Stormbringer" remaster. The album, which was originally issued in November 1974, will be re-released as a double-CD set, with CD1 featuring the original album remastered plus the new mixes by Glenn Hughes and Pete Mew. CD2 will contain the original quad mixes in 4.1 and stereo. The set is likely to come out in a special edition, which Simon Robinson from the Deep Purple Appreciation Society has been asked to put together. "I'm going for a CD-size hardback book format, with extras including accurate reproductions of the American in-store advertising card and other goodies," Simon says. No firm release date has been confirmed yet.

Curious how they're going to do 4.1 on a cd? I would have prefered an unreleased concert for cd 2 (if there are any left!); MK3 smoked live.

Probably on hybrid SACD, a format which EMI/Uk supports. U.S.A. release through Rhino would probably be DVD with Dolby Digital and/or DTS.

Didn't they release a remastered version of Stormbringer along with Made In Europe and Come Taste The Band earlier this year ? I believe it was on the label Friday Music .

hmmm, not my favorite DP album at all, but a vintage high res quad mix, very tempting, I have DTS surrounds of Fly Like An Eagle and Not Fragile which I belive are the 70's quad mixes of those albums and they sound really great.

I mentioned right at the beginning of the post that this was not to be confused with those Friday Music remasters which the band had nothing to do with and offer no bonus tracks or anything else.
I'd stay away from those and wait for this. As for the album itself, "Stormbringer" was a major disappointment (though the title track is awesome), but I'd like to hear it again and it has a great album cover! You can see why Blackmore quit to form Rainbow after the tour for this album. Glenn Hughes was just veering the band way too far into funk and R&B which they continued with on "Come Taste The Band".

I'm currently listening to the live version of Burn/Stormbringer from the new Whitesnake bonus disc. It's AWFUL. Part of the reason is Coverdale desperately needs Hughes' second vocal on this, but the band's also horribly sloppy. Works for the Grateful Dead, but not for 80's arena metal.

I've never listened to Trapeze or GH's solo stuff, so my opinion on him comes just from DP, but I always thought his voice & Coverdale's really complimented each other. I'd personally enjoy a Mk 3 reunion, though from hearing the Whitesnake bonus disc, it sounds like Coverdale's voice is kind of shot.

Not to mention the neat bit of foreshadowing by having a rainbow on the album cover that continued on to the cover of the Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow album. Somewhere I read that if you put the two album covers together, it's like a puzzle that's been put together.

Finally! "Stormbringer" will now see the light of day, and it sounds pretty nice.

From Blabbermouth.net:

EMI Records have confirmed the release of special anniversary editions of Deep Purple's classic album Stormbringer on CD, with an accompanying DVD, and vinyl LPs. The Stormbringer reissues are due to hit the stores on February 23, 2009.
Stormbringer features the MK III Deep Purple line-up of David Coverdale (vocals), Glenn Hughes (vocals and bass), Ritchie Blackmore (guitar), Ian Paice (drums) and Jon Lord (keyboards). Recorded in Musicland Studios, Munich and released in 1974, Stormbringer is the Deep Purple album that often doesn't sound like a Deep Purple album. Although considered proponents of the hard rock genre, as hinted at on previous album, Burn, Stormbringer saw the band create a more funk and soul-influenced sound.
Owing to the direction of Stormbringer, it was to be Blackmore's last studio album with the MK III line-up. He left to form Rainbow, making way for the MK IV version of Deep Purple, with American Tommy Bolin on guitar.
CD Tracklisting: 1. Stormbringer 2. Love Don't Mean a Thing 3. Holy Man 4. Hold On 5. Lady Double Dealer 6. You Can't Do It Right 7. High Ball Shooter 8. The Gypsy 9. Soldier of Fortune
Bonus Tracks: 10. Holy Man (Glenn Hughes remix) 11. You Can't Do It Right (Glenn Hughes remix) 12. Love Don't Mean a Thing (Glenn Hughes remix) 13. Hold On (Glenn Hughes remix) 14. High Ball Shooter (instrumental) 4.30 (from Listen Learn Read On Box Set)
DVD: The DVD features an original Quadraphonic mix album as 5.1 DTS 96/24 and the original album Quadrophonic mix stereo 48/24 with on screen images.
2-LP Tracklisting: Side 1 (remasters) Stormbringer 4.03 Love Don't Mean A Thing 4.24 Holy Man 4.37 Hold On 5.08 Side 2 (remasters) Lady Double Dealer 3.17 You Can't Do It Right 3.25 High Ball Shooter 4.24 The Gypsy 4.10 Soldier Of Fortune 3.12 Side 3 (remixes) Holy Man 4.38 You Can't Do It Right 3.53 Love Don't Mean A Thing 5.21 Hold On 5.23 Side 4 High Ball Shooter (instrumental) 4.30 High Ball Shooter (quad) 4.24 You Can't Do It Right (quad) 3.25 Soldier Of Fortune (quad) 3.12.

According to EMI/UK's Nigel Reeve(in an e-mail that I received from him), it's 48Khz because of the limitations of the source(for the Quadrophonic mix) as supplied to them. As I recall, this was recorded and mixed in the U.S.A., and this(a 48Khz source) may be what they got from Warner Bros. who hold the Quadrophonic mix.
I Do wish that they had issued this as a DVD-Audio or SACD.

According to the DEEP PURPLE Appreciation Society have announced the following final details for the remastered version of Deep Purple's 1974 album, Stormbringer:

There is a disc CD limited slipcase edition. CD1 is the original stereo album remastered, plus Glenn's excellent remixes and a couple of the quad mixes reduced to stereo. CD2 is a DVD format carrying the full quad album in 4.1 audio (it is NOT a true DVDA or SACD). Despite earlier hopes (and one or two sites suggesting otherwise) there is no actual video material on the second disc.

There is also a double gatefold vinyl edition, also limited, in a gatefold sleeve, with album art fully restored and looking loads better than the original. The inner gatefold has all the lyrics. There are special printed inner bags with full sleeve notes, pics and memorabilia (see more images here).

These editions are available to pre-order from dpas mailorder (here). Release is now set for the last week of February 2009.

T-Shirt: there is a limited edition repro US 1974 shirt design available. See details below or pre-order here.

Poster: a lot of fans have asked about this, and there will be a limited edition poster (approx 600 X 1200mm) available shortly with the gatefold artwork in full. You can see an image of this here. It can be pre-ordered.

Once the 2 disc Ltd Edition has gone, the title will revert to a lower priced 1CD regular edition with the album, remixes and a few other items. The old CD version is being deleted.

Took long enough. I'll just get the one CD version when it comes out since there will be no video content.

I'll get the 2-disc, because I want the surround sound material(though a friend long ago burned me a downloaded version of the quadraphonic mix taken from a reel to reel tape release)

I agree with IP. Surround doesn't matter to me, especially if it's only COMPRESSED Dolby/DTS.

But the circulating bootleg download surround versions are also DTS, albeit dubbed from a treble deficient, high speed duplicated open reel release. EMI's disc will be taken from the appropriate master tapes, so it should be an improvement.

Well I'm buying this. :)

The following Deep Purple release was suppose to be out on Feb 23 . I haven't heard anything on if it did or didn't . Does anyone know for sure , either way ?

Stormbringer remaster

EMI has pushed back to February release date for the Stormbringer remaster. The release was already announced for January 19 and is advertised so at online retailers. The new date that we have is February 23.

There will be 3 packages: a CD+DVD (CD with original album + Glenn Hughes remixes), DVD (audio only, quadraphonic mix), and a 2LP (with original mixes on LP1 and bonuse tracks on LP2). Simon Robinson was involved in the release, so DPAS has artwork details on their site.

You can preorder CD+DVD from Amazon:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B001M2IXEA/?tag=imwan-21

And the 2LP vinyl package:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B001M2IXE0/?tag=imwan-21

CD Track list:
1. Stormbringer
2. Love Don’t Mean a Thing
3. Holy Man
4. Hold On
5. Lady Double Dealer
6. You Can’t Do It Right
7. High Ball Shooter
8. The Gypsy
9. Soldier of Fortune

Bonus Tracks:
10. Holy Man (Glenn Hughes remix)
11. You Can’t Do It Right (Glenn Hughes remix)
12. Love Don’t Mean a Thing (Glenn Hughes remix)
13. Hold On (Glenn Hughes remix)
14. High Ball Shooter (instrumental) (from Listen Learn Read On Box Set)

DVD
The DVD contains two versions of the album: an original quadraphonic mix in 5.1 (or rather 4.1, we are not sure yet) DTS 96/24 and the same quadraphonic tracks mixed down to stereo 2.0 48/24 with on screen images.

All I can say is that Amazon UK says mine was shipped on Feb 23 - so it appears to be out there.
