From MusicTAP:

Capitol will revisit the Beach Boys vaults with the release of the 16CD Box of US Singles Collection – The Capitol Years: 1962-1965. Made in the image of the several like packages before it (remember the Rolling Stones’ Abkco singles that replicated a vinyl disc with the popularized songs as originally released), this Box will offer the A-side/B-side songs in both stereo and mono. This set will also include eight previously unreleased stereo-mono mixes, some new stereo mixes. This Box set will add in a 48-page booklet. This is perfect for completists and collectors, just as the preceding sets that it emulates were. This is set for release on June 10.

The previously unreleased tracks will include "409"(Live in Chicago 1965),an alternate mono edit of "Why Do Fools Fall in Love",a mono backing track of "Help Me Rhonda",new stereo remixes of "(When I Grow Up) to Be a Man","She Knows Me Too Well" & "Little Saint Nick" & a stereo backing track for "Do You Wanna Dance".By the way,in case you're wondering,Brian Wilson DOES appear on the 1965 Chicago concert. This was during a brief period after Glen Campbell had left the group and before Bruce Johnston joined, where Brian Wilson rejoined the group for a few shows. Two Chicago shows were taped(parts have been bootlegged) but no live album resulted because the set list was too similar to "Beach Boys Concert".

I personally loved the picture sleeves of the original Capitol 45's. Of course, one best have a carousel 5 disc player due to the original length of time.

Also the new stereo version of "She Knows Be So Well" for me is worth the package in itself. One of my fave Beach Boy tracks ever! Now if we can only get "The Beach Boys Today" in a stereo mix that would be something!

Your right Phil, I have the above mentioned in the collection. But still would like Capitol to make attempt pulling it all together with their masters.

And as I've subsequently become aware, the stereo mix of "Do You Wanna Dance" to be included in the CD singles box will be backing track-only,which is unfortunate. Yes,I'm aware that the guitar solo as heard in the released mono mix was a live-during-mono mixdown effort, and is not available for inclusion in a stereo remix. Like many fans, I assumed that the vocal overdub which doubled Dennis Wilson's lead vocal was also a live-during-mixdown overdub, but as I've now become aware from the session analysis on http://wwwbeachboysarchives.com ,that vocal overdub was on a second stage multitrack that was overlooked by(or unavailable to) the people who copied and mixed the material for the "Sea of Tunes" bootlegs. What this means is that it is possible to create a stereo mix of "Do You Wanna Dance" with vocals which would be musically near-identical to the mono mix, except that would feature the earlier rejected guitar solo. Now,apparently, we'll have nothing better than the "Sea of Tunes" mix, which has a single-tracked lead vocal, and the basic track mixed down too low. For those of us who have created homemade CD-R "Today/Summer Days" stereo two-fers, this is unfortunate.

So we get a detailed description of the packaging, but what's the sound like? Will Capitol finally get it right?

I hope so. My copy of the box set is presently en route. I'll give you some feedback when it arrives.

I was stunned when my wonderful family got this for me as a gift! The sound is a revelation - tracks have never sounded better (digitally), the new stereo mixes are stunning, and the mono mixes on "All Dressed Up For School" and the alt "I'm So Young" are groovier than the stereo mixes.

One SERIOUS flaw, though, with my set, at least - the "Surfin' U.S.A." disc plays the contents of the "Surfer Girl" disc. (The "Surfer Girl" disc plays the correct tracks.) In case anyone grabbed this set and hasn't played the "Surfin' U.S.A." disc, check it - I can't be the only one to have received a bad disc. Likely I'll check this site's old thread on the Beatles "Capitol Albums Vol. 2" fiasco to get Capitol customer service info, and can get this straightened out with minimal hassle.

The packaging doesn't indicate it, but the discs are HDCD encoded.
