Am the only one p'd off that companies keep releasing these multi-disc anthologies with discs that are well below capacity? Fifteen three-minute songs per CD?

Without putting too fine a point on it, those 450-500 minutes that take up 10 CDs could easily be placed on seven, maybe even six CDs. But then, they couldn't charge a $150 for it.

They'd have to, to maintain margins -- in the U.S., it's the number of tracks that determines royalties, not the number of discs. As to pressing, I'd say that the difference between 6 and 10 discs is negligible. But of course (and this may be what you're getting at) ten CDs looks like more, the total number of tracks notwithstanding.

Or: would a person who would pay $150 for ten compact discs be willing to pay, say, $135 for the same number of songs on six discs? Unless you're paying attention, ten discs looks like the better deal.

Probably not because most Americans are mathematically illiterate. Best Buy has a bunch of 3-CD "Box Sets" of people like Neil Diamond, packaged as round tin boxes, with 12 songs per disc. Fewer total songs than many two-CD sets. But they're 3-CDs. What a great buy. :(

Of course much of my concern comes from space considerations. Many on this board can sympathize but most people don't have that problem.

I totally agree about multi-disc sets that come nowhere near capacity for each disc. One typical giveaway is when they make a big deal on the front cover about how many CDs are in the set. Best Buy and other stores have entire sections of these. It's really kind of insulting when you think about it.

As for this particular set, I'll make the obvious point that there isn't exactly a lack of Motown compilations already out there. Still, thanks to the inevitable late night informercials, this Time-Life collection will reach people who might never browse a CD department or look at AmazWAN. I suspect it will be a big seller.

These three disc "box sets" have been around for years. I remember seeing them in places like Costco, Sam's Club and BJ's over a decade ago. Even then, all I had to do was look at the number of tracks per disc to realize what a waste of disc space they were.

Hitsville U.S.A., baby. Hitsville U.S.A. is the way to go when it comes to Motown.

No argument here. They did that one right.

I still play it all the time, Dr. Evil. Great sound, great song selection (because they tossed in some lesser-known gems), great everything. You couldn't ask for a better box set. (I have only the first box, as those are THE classic Motown years.)

I think the complete Motown single boxes at Hip-O-Select are interesting, but I don't know if I'd really want to own every single and b-side. Hitsville USA sums that classic era up very nicely, I agree. And it's the only one you really need, because after Motown left Detroit, it wasn't the same.

I have several of the single artist compilations but I would like to get the Motown Box set that came out a few years ago (I believe in conjunction with a PBS special) as it concentrates on stereo mixes. I just haven't found a good deal on it yet.

I've got BOTH Hitsville USA sets (the 2nd one is pretty good too), and the Motown Box (stereo). Now there's 12 discs that pretty well sum everything up to me. Add the Deluxe Edition of the Standing In The Shadows soundtrack as a bonus look at the Funk Brothers' instrumentation, and you're good to go.

And if I had to drop something, it'd be the Motown Box (stereo). Some of the new Moulton mixes are flangey messes. But as curiosities they're OK.

I'm with you on the two "Hitsville USA" box sets and the deluxe edition of "Standing in the Shadows of Motown" as being great overviews of the Motown era (and I also like "The Motown Box" for the long versions of "Heat Wave" and "Please Mr. Postman" but those mixes by Tom Moulton will never take the place of the orignal single mixes that were done in Motown's heyday). And I agree with the folks who feel that the new 10 CD "Motown Box" set from Time-Life does not make the best use of CD playing time and they could've placed all of it's contents on fewer discs and charge a lower price for the box set
