complete?

i love how record companies use the english language.

how is this complete?

what does this cover the last 5 or 6 albums?

another odd, odd thing, along with the krause/plant duets thing.

This looks like a best-of from the WB/Reprise years, with a couple things licensed from Universal. But 19 tracks over 2 CDs is a bit skimpy.

I agree that this is way beyond ludicrous. Even if you leave out Clapton's stints with the Yardbirds, Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Cream, Blind Faith, Derek and the Dominos, etc. - this still neglects about 25 years of Clapton's solo work.

There's nothing here to recommend this and on top of that... ugly cover art too.

Pass on this.

As a longtime Clapton fan, I highly recommend The Road to Escondido with J.J. Cale.

I personally think Clapton Chronicles: The Best of EC, from 1999, covers his later stuff much better, with no filler-a true Best of set!

The only real "hit" (and that's stretching it some) from the seven records since Chronicles is "Revolution"; which should have been on this new one in place of Riding w/ the King or Sweet Home Chicago as these weren't hits for him at all. Even though CC has only 14 tracks and the new one has 19, most of the extra ones are older hits to fill it out more. And we all have them already on "The Cream Of Clapton or the box Crossroads

I agree, this one is worthless, should have at least had "Revolution", terrible cover and basically duplicates the better comp Chronicles, but adds more filler.

Nothing off the last seven discs even warrent discussing except for "Rev" as those discs were either so boring nothing could even be listened to much less discussed for inclusion. (IMO) Or if the disc was decent like Road w/ JJ nothing particularly stood out but the entire disc flowed well enough that it didn't suck.

I just have not been impressed with EC for most of these past seven or his concerts. He has mellowed way too much. I haven't gotten any of his past ten records out since I initially listened to them; that's how bad he has gotten for me. And that makes me sad because I grew up loving him and everything he released. And his early concerts were some of my favorites. It's just a shame. Rod Stewart is right there with him.

I'm just glad they didn't stick a previously unreleased track on it...

It occurs to me that maybe the 2nd disc is actually a DVD of videos. That would make it more enticing--to me, anyway.

Renny,

For me, Pilgrim was the beginning of his "heavy-mellow" boring slide. Again, I have been a huge fan for many years but I really can't tell the difference between Pilgrim, Reptile, Back Home and Road. With Road being the best of the bunch but just barely. (IMO)

Even his records w/BB and the two Robert Johnson covers were simply boring.

With any other artist, putting out multiple records that bore me and I don't listen to much or at all, I usually drop them and stop buying the upcoming ones. ( and sometimes I send the boring ones to the used stores and stop my collection on their last good record so my memories remain intact) I have given him at least three more than my normal amount but I keep thinking since he is Clapton, that maybe he has one more classic still in him.....Sigh.

And as I said, Rod Stewart is next on my list to stop buying. His last five or so have been real stinkers. When an artist, who normally has written classic rock anthems, begins the "covers" route, then it usually is a sign, they have nothing left to contribute and are in coast mode.

Seriously, can you think of anyone who put out a covers record and then followed it up with a truely great record? Or when they stay with sappy ballads and have forgotten how to rock-out and Clapton has done both.

And I don't want to list any more because it will make me more depressed as most are my heros from growing up.

Rich

I gave up on Clapton when Phil Collins stepped in, then got "Journeyman" and that was it. I will get "Road to Escondido" because I've never heard a bad song by JJ Cale. Later Clapton is not bad per se, just a little uninspired.

Pilgrim's songs were OK, The production ruined it for me. When I first heard the song "Circus" on the unplugged broadcast, I loved it. (why it was never included on the CD or DVD is beyond me) Then when I saw it was included on Pilgrim, I bought the CD right away. When I listened to it, it didn't even sound like the same song I heard before.

Anyway, getting back to this new release, I looked at my copy of "Chronicles", and no less than EIGHT of the songs from that are repeated here. Ridiculous!

I think this CD is being tied in with the release of Clapton's autobiography. If you look at the cover of this CD set and the book, you'll see they look the same.
I recall when word first came up that Clapton was going to have a book published, there had been word that there was going to be a box set to be released at the same time as the book. I was hoping it was going to have a ton of rarities on it. Well anyway, it appears that those plans have either been cancelled or scaled way back. I wonder if the box will ever happen? I bet Eric has more unreleased beauties from over the years that are still waiting to see the light of day.

I dug Pilgrim, and I really dug Reptile and Ridin' With The King!

Have to agree with your overall view, but...Bowie: "Pin Ups" followed by "Diamond Dogs" (truely great may be stretching it, but great, yes!)

I stopped buying Clapton with his last release because I realized that I have never listened to his last dozen (except the blues ones). He was so great - now he is so middle of the road.

Renny, yes, I liked Pilgrim too. Quite a bit, really. I can't explain why, I just like it. Maybe it's the Dylan cover for starters. Eric has had a couple of good Dylan covers now.

Yep, here's more details about the book ~ it's scheduled to be published on October 9th:

Is it just me or does the cover art look more like an ad for some new perfume? I can see it now: "Clapton -- the new fragrance by L'Oreal."

Thank God someone came to their senses and changed that cover art!

This is the international CD release, and it appears the U.S will be getting the unexciting black/red artwork for the CD and book.

http://www.whereseric.com/news/2007/08/ ... ease-.html

26 September CD Update: the artwork for the upcoming international CD release has been revised. Rather than the black / red art that matched the U.S. autobiography cover, it will now feature a photo of Eric and a facsimile signature (see cover-image below).
