Anyone have any idea how much they're going to be charging?

More than likely not enough to keep me from buying it.

I'm cautiously optimistic that this will be the first vault release by any artist that I can get excited about in quite a while...however, why such ambiguity about the musical content of these discs (as well as the "Amazing Journey" DVD set) with the release date less than a month away? The blurb is carefully worded--it says "previously unheard", not "previously unreleased"...
More importantly--why is this not being marketed as a major holiday retail release? We're talking about unreleased material by the original lineup of one of the all-time legendary rock and roll bands--why wouldn't Walmart or Best Buy or even Starbucks want to sell this set? I know my musical tastes aren't exactly in step with the 21st century (or with anybody else in this forum for that matter) but--I don't get the internet-only thing...this isn't like Townshend's Meher Baba devotional stuff for hardcore Who fans only...right?
In the meantime, here is another title that I am not going to go to the mall and buy (thus dening the record companies the opportunity to try and cause me to make any impulse purchases of additional titles). Can somebody try and convince me one more time how it is downloads that are supposedly killing the retail CD business, and not the fact that there are hardly any new CD's available at the retail level that I want to buy in the first place?

Personally, I am FOR buying the CD's from record shops and NOT downloading. I like having the physical item to play and look at. All the great record stores are closing down...Tower Records, FYE...there is really no place that house a good selection of CD's. Best Buy and Circuit City are terrible.

Thanks Gary...
I'm still not sold on IPods yet either. I know it can hold a load of music, but I still enjoy the idea of pulling out a CD and putting it in the player and listening to the whole CD as opposed to trying to find it on a little machine.

I know...we were chatting about "downloading" ruining the retail market...

Must read better before posting I guess...
And yes I agree that downloading ruins the retail market and the physical market for us music lovers.

There's no place that really has a good music selection anymore. I miss the days of looking thru the racks and seeing what there is to buy.

Hey Mark:
Jump on the LIRR and meet me at J&R. They have the best selection around now.

Jimbo,
When I did work in the City, I always had a place to go. I always went to Virgin or FYE...in the suburbs, they are harder to come by.

Other then the occasional BB & CC blowout, truth is my music & movie shopping is almost 100% internet these days. Closest real store with a decent selection is 20+ miles away. Selection is nowhere as good as on the net; even with shipping the prices will be higher & I have to pay sales tax on local purchases.
In fact, last time I bought something from the store 20 miles away i ordered it on the phone & had them ship it!

That's where we differ... I love my M. P. 3 player. I used to make various artist compilation cassettes, but now all I do is have my player on Shuffle play all the time and it's the same thing, without having to worry about switching tapes or making new compilations to eliminate songs I no longer like (or add new songs I do).

My concern on this release is what the price is going to be and if the individual tracks from this release will eventually have all of the shows from whence they came released in their entirety. In other words, will I eventually have to buy the songs all over again and then have to sell this one down the line? I fear that this might be a buy it sampler.

I'd just like to know why they're being so cagey about the contents of the disc with less than a month to go before release. The trailer for this "new" Who documentary DVD features wayyyyy too much footage previously seen in "The Kids Are Alright"--and that's just the trailer. Nothing in the little blurb above discloses what percentage of these two CD's will be previously unreleased material...

According to the website, November 5th is the big kickoff date for the Who.com store. It's a classic Who move to be cagey about stuff. When Townshend was releasing CDs on his website, they were fantastic products, and he brought them fast and furious. Hopefully, he's paying enough attention to give this release some thought and quality control. I hope you're right that this CD is a sampler for archive releases to come, but I doubt it. My guess is that we'll get some London Coliseum '69, some SF '71, some King Biscuit '73, and some Swansea '76. I'm hoping for tons of unreleased '71-'72 material, but I've learned not to hold my breath with these guys (my favorite band, by the way).
And the CD only thing is ridiculous. Didn't Radiohead's move last week teach anybody anything?
Jeff

The new DVD has been a bit of a fiasco, in terms of the film-makers' engagement with the Who's hardcore following - fans were originally promised two full shows (Coliseum '69 and Kilburn '77), along with all sorts of other wonderful nuggets (Paris '72, fan footage of Live at Leeds!) etc.
The way the production team were trying to engage with the fans & enlist their help in putting it all together, it gave hope that they might even be able to sweep up some of the hoarded "Holy Grails" (such as the colour pro-shot footage ofHouston '71 )
I daresay we'll see SOME of this material show up on the new DVD (not Houston, though), but the project quite quickly ditched the full show &/or full song concept, for something more piecemeal and mainstream. Interesting to note that the Whomovie site has ditched the fan forums - anything to do with being unable to cope with criticism? (A similar occurence occurred with the Doors' site, and Cream before them)
I am excited to see the new CD release. As for the DVD, I couldn't care less about new interviews with Sting & whoever talking about the Who, though I am curious to see what's on it, when it finally appears...

Then there's the other side of the equation-What if this 2-CD package turns out to be the only live Moon Era Who from the archives for audio that we get? I'd rather that it be a series where we get full or near full individual shows over a stretch of time. If they did it that way, they'd get consistent moolah at least from me.

I'm not that big a fan of live CD's, but when I do buy one, I much prefer a full show rather than highlights from many shows.
