LOS ANGELES - Rhino Handmade continues its celebration of Atlantic Records' 60th anniversary with ATLANTIC SOUL (1959-1975), the second limited-edition, four-disc boxed set honoring genres championed by the label. The series began earlier this year with Atlantic Blues (1949-1970) and will conclude in 2008 with a set dedicated to vocal groups.

For each, Rhino Handmade will limit production to 3,000 individually numbered boxed sets, presenting each in a vintage-looking 12” x 12” box that includes a booklet filled with extensive liner notes and rare photos. ATLANTIC SOUL will be available November 20 exclusively from http://www.rhinohandmade.com for a list price of $79.98.

Produced by Billy Vera, the 82 tracks on ATLANTIC SOUL eschew the more famous recordings most fans already own. Instead, the four-disc set delivers soul obscurities and lesser-known hits-some making their CD debut-that have, until now, somehow managed to be overlooked in the history books. This box reveals the incredible breadth and variety of not only Atlantic's taste but also the range of soul itself. From the sweet orchestral soul of Ben E. King to the raw Detroit gospel of The Falcons, from the Southern funk of Memphis and Muscle Shoals to the '70s rejuvenation of the New York and Philly studio scenes, ATLANTIC SOUL has it all.

Vera assembles a collection that could be a university course in soul singing, gathering an impressive array of magnificent voices that found a home at the world's greatest soul record company. Starting with Atlantic's superstars, Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin, ATLANTIC SOUL also spotlights hitmakers-Solomon Burke, Wilson Pickett, Esther Phillips, Otis Redding and Donny Hathaway-as well as those who didn't have any luck during their stay, but who made it big later-Patti LaBelle and The Isley Brothers. The tracks also feature great voices whose day had come and gone but were still sounding great: Howard Tate, James Carr, and Baby Washington.

In addition to the voices, ATLANTIC SOUL is also blessed with a host of talented musicians, including many guitarists who are legendary among soul aficionados: Steve Cropper, Robert Ward, Bobby Womack, Eddie Hinton, and Reggie Young. A pre-Experience Jimi Hendrix makes a surprising appearance, playing on Ronnie Isley's “Have You Ever Been Disappointed.”

Rhino Handmade will continue the celebration of Atlantic's 60th anniversary early next year with the release of Atlantic Vocal Groups (1951-1963). The four-disc set will have a similar look and feel to ATLANTIC SOUL and Atlantic Blues and will feature classic Atlantic artists such as The Coasters, The Drifters, and The Clovers
