Hi Renny & Everybody,
Renny, I hope you are either sitting down in a nice, comfortable chair or laying down on a really nice soft-cushioned sofa with a soothing drink in your hand (preferably in a soft plastic cup) and some pleasant music is playing in the background (not The Doors) because I have something to inform the members of our beloved IMWAN membership which may cause you to have a reaction.
I just want to let you know that you are a dear friend to this board and that we all love you. We care. As your close friend, I just wanted to let you know that I am standing by next to you (figuratively) and am ready, willing and able to help you get through this tough announcement which I know you will show a rolling of the eyes skywards as soon as you see it. It's the part afterwards that I'm a little scared of, o.k.? Now people, let's all stand next to Renny and support him in his hour of need. (I'm starting to chuckle). I am going to type this in lower case in the hope that this will ease the pain of the announcement. O.k. people, are you ready? Renny, my friend, are you ready? I'm right here for you!...
O.k., then. Here goes-nice and easy (I hope-Steve's fingers are crossed-a tough thing to do when you're typing)-musictap has just reported that the doors are going to release a two-cd very best of package.
Now Renny, we are all going to make sure you don't have any sharp objects around for a while.
LOL! When I saw that news, I immediately thought of you, Renny. I hope you know that I was just joking. God! They're releasing another one.

Despite the abundance of Doors compilations, I presume that this upcoming 2 CD set will be the first anthology (aside from last year's box set) to feature the recent remixes/remasters of The Doors material. However, Elektra Records has been to this well too many times for me.

I always used to get Susan Powter and Annie Lennox confused...but I digress...

What everyone needs is yet *another* comp of Doors material.

What is unique about this one is it consists of ALL 40th Anniversary remixes... (yawn)

Has anyone ever compiled a list of every Doors comp ever released???

Counting these all up, it seems there should be about three times as many Doors comps released as the six original studio albums. Just a rough guess...

They're competing with Lynyrd Skynyrd & Clannad for most compilations ever.

The Beach Boys must be battling for the top spot in compilations by now ...

but elvis and the beach boys each had quite a few regular albums.

the doors only had 6.

and i think "13" and "weird scenes inside a gold mine" actually came out before morrison died. so they had 2 done done right away!!

The Who's gotta be up there -

MBB&B
Who's GH
Hooligans
WBWB
My Generation: TVBotW
20th Century Masters
Ultimate Collection
Then & Now 64-04
Then & Now 64-06

That's 9 comps vs. 11 studio albums...

Don't forget:

"Direct Hits" (import, LP only)
"The Story Of The Who" (import, LP only)
"The Singles" (import)
"The Who Collection" (import)
"Thirty Years Of Maximum R & B" (boxed set)
"The 1st Singles Box" (import boxed set)
"Thirty Years Of Maximum R & B Sampler" (promo)

Technically, the following are compilations as well, but compilations of rarities instead of greatest hits:
"Magic Bus: The Who On Tour"
"Odds & Sods" (1974 version)
"Odds & Sods" (1998 version)
"Who's Missing"
"Two's Missing"
"Rarities Vol. 1 1966-68"
"Rarities Vol. 2 1970-72"

I wouldn't count any of these Who releases w/ rarities as comps or Greatest Hits packages, though it's debatable on that Singles box.
Promos don't count either.

There should be an official list of releases over the years for the Doors, the Beach Boys, the Who, the Kinks, etc.

Anyway, someone please count up all of the various Doors comps - there's been a @#$%load of these!!!

I had an early Who CD I believe that was called simply "Greatest Hits" It had the Union Jack on the cover. It was on MCA, and I think it was one of those bare bone budget CD's they used to put out, with a grid on the back and just the song titles. Like the ones for Elton, ONJ, and others.

That was my first Who album, too. Except I bought it on vinyl. :luddite:

Someday, we're going to see the following box sets...

THE DOORS - THE COLLECTED COMPILATIONS, VOLUME I: THE LP ERA
For the Doors completist and connoiseur, Rhino Records has compiled this wonderfully rendered box set of The Doors "Best Of" compilations compiled for the LP format. All CDs feature original artwork and track sequences and are in cardboard sleeves, replicating the original LP packaging.

These compilations are making their CD debut in this box set:

13
Weird Scenes Inside The Gold Mine
(two disc set)
The Best Of The Doors (Quadraphonic)
Greatest Hits (1980)]

THE DOORS - THE COLLECTED COMPILATIONS, VOLUME II: THE CD ERA
These compilations are appearing together for the FIRST TIME in this box set. All CDs feature original artwork and track sequences and in cardboard sleeves that don't replicate the original CD packaging.

The Best Of The Doors (1985, two disc set)
Greatest Hits (1996)
The Very Best Of The Doors
Legacy: The Absolute Best (two disc set)

And Coming Soon...

THE DOORS - THE COLLECTED COMPILATIONS, VOLUME III: THE 40TH ANNIVERSARY REMIXES ERA

(If I've missed any compilations in either set, let me know. These are just the US versions, by the way)

No matter how many Doors, Beach Boys, Skynyrd and Who compilations are released, I don't think they'll ever catch up to Elvis. Or that other guy GoogaMooga mentioned a while back.
