Cocker was the youngest son of a civil servant. He left school early and became an apprentice gas fitter. In 1961, he started his musical career in the pubs of Sheffield. Under the stage name Vance Arnold, Cocker sang with his band Vance Arnold and the Avengers. In 1963 the band supported The Rolling Stones at Sheffield City Hall. In 1964 Cocker brought out his first single, a cover of The Beatles' "I'll Cry Instead" with a new band, Joe Cocker Big Blues. This band ventured as far as France, where they played on American air bases. After a lull, Cocker teamed up with Chris Stainton, to form The Grease Band, in 1966. They were noticed by Denny Cordell, the producer of Procol Harum, The Moody Blues and Georgie Fame. Cordell set Cocker up with a residency at The Marquee Club in London.

Did Dennis Wilson really compose and write "You are so Beautiful"? I like to think so.

i was never a big fan of joe cocker's albums, but always liked his singles.

i don't realy know how many studio albums he had, but i do know that he's had a hell of a lot of greatesthits/best of's.

so i ask the joe cocker fans out there,

is cocker approaching doors territory?

Sorry..."Classic Cocker" is anything pre-Captiol, IMHO.

Bruce Fisher and Billy Preston wrote "You Are So Beautiful." Denny used to (sort of) sing it at Beach Boys concerts in the early 80s.

I've read somewhere that Denny had a hand in writing it, but went uncredited. To me it sounds like a Denny song.

Joe Cocker is pretty consistent. I have several cds from the last 2 decades and of course hits that cover the early stuff and later, but in the last few years the collections have been coming out often. The track listing for the one disc Ultimate Collection that came out a few years ago is better overview, for more, the 2 disc Gold is good. For a lot of the early stuff, the 2 disc anthology would be the way to go (I think it goes to the early 80's. I don't see a point to this new collection though.
