Was this disc any good? The original Rhino Rutles disc was great, but I never picked this one up, as it smacked of a good idea being run into the ground.

AMW,

It's pretty good, as Neil is an excellent tunesmith, but it certainly is not up to the sublime heights of the original Rutles disc. One may be better off enjoying it as a new project rather than a Rutles continuation.

To add to what Jay said ~ approach it from the perspective of it being a new Neil Innes album rather than a Rutles album, and it's very enjoyable. (Kinda like ELO's Zoom might have worked better as a Jeff Lynne solo album.)

I cannot believe it's been 11 years since this came out!
Anyway, the bonus tracks are good, but it's annoying the way they get you to buy these CD's over and over again...

Worthwhile. Makes the package feel "complete". They're not throwaways by any means.

So the new CD doesn't include the version of "It's Looking Good" that was on the original Japanese CD?

No. Maybe they felt that belonged more with the original album than the reunion?

Let me add this to our Rutles thread, for those unaware ~ the original packaging of the classic 1978 album is now out in Japan as a mini LP replica edition:

hmmm ... i'm just going by memory now, but wasn't that an acoustic version on archeaology?

too bad they didn't release all (2) of the rutles cds in a package -- sort of like what capital's doing with the american beatles albums.

I see there's 6 bonus tracks on the Rutles '78 CD reissue -- I wonder what they are. (I didn't see a track listing). Any idea? I also wonder if they include the cool booklet that came with the original LP.

The original Rutles CD had 6 bonus tracks not on the LP ("Goose Step Mama," "Baby Let Me Be," "Blue Suede Schubert," "Between Us," "It's Looking Good," and "Get Up And Go"). I'm guessing the new CD is the same.

Okay y'all, another Rutles variation is coming out in the UK on August 13th:

Image

>> Released for the first time on CD in the UK, The Rutles album was the soundtrack to the original TV spoof documentary film All You Need Is Cash. The brainchild of Neil Innes and Eric Idle, this expanded CD adds six tracks to the 14 track vinyl version first released in 1978 and comes in a vinyl replica digi-pack. One of rock's most enduring and insightful parodies, brilliantly mirroring The Beatles' career, it even featured a cameo from George Harrison (as a TV reporter). The Rutles themselves were Neil Innes as Ron Nasty (Lennon), Eric Idle as Dirk McQuickly (McCartney), ex-Beach Boy Rikki Fataar as Stig O'Hara (Harrison) and Patto's John Halsey as Barry Wom (Ringo). The fifth Rutle, for recording purposes, was Patto's mercurial guitarist Ollie Halsall. <<

1. Goose-Step Mama
2. Number One
3. Baby Let Me Be
4. Hold My Hand
5. Blue Suede Schubert
6. I Must Be in Love
7. With a Girl Like You
8. Between Us
9. Living in Hope
10. Ouch!
11. It's Looking Good
12. Doubleback Alley
13. Good Times Roll
14. Nevertheless
15. Love Life
16. Piggy in the Middle
17. Another Day
18. Cheese and Onions
19. Get Up and Go
20. Let's Be Natural

Does anyone know if this new Rutles disc is remastered? The Rhino one came out ages ago and I need to figure out if it's worth the upgrade (especially with the exchange rate these days).

I finally ordered (and just received) the Rutles Archaeology reissue -- the one with the new bonus track "Rut-A-Lot". I was thinking this was something left over from back when Archaeology was recorded which is why it never crossed my mind that it's a dig at Idle's "Spam-A-Lot". For those curious, Rut-A-Lot is just a live medley of Rutles songs. Innes introduces it saying something about wanting to take the show to Las Vegas. I wonder if he's referring to The Beatles' "Love" production in Vegas, or to Spam-A-Lot.
