Chief comments so far among the fans are...
(a) another smaller box -- four discs instead of five -- as has been the case for the last few EMI titles (b) questionable decision to feature a 2022 live show rather than a vintage live recording (although the Montreal official bootleg and the Rock Steady show are welcome inclusions on the Blu-ray) (c) not many admirers of the alternate cover art

I am in agreement on all of this.
The cover art is dreadful and a 2022 show?
Meh.
I’ll still be adding it to the collection, but I thought this box would be special and it isn’t.
I saw this tour at the Ritz in New York in late 1989 with a young Dream Theater opening, and again in summer 1990 in Philly and we met them after the show.
This is one of their greatest albums.

I've been stumped about some of their inclusions and omissions throughout this deluxe reissue series, but overall I've enjoyed whatever they've given us. The packaging is always good (even if that's not always the case with the re-worked cover art), and the interview documentaries are always enjoyable & enlightening. I've been eagerly awaiting this one as it's in my Marillion Top 5. Can't wait to hear it in surround sound, especially "The Space." I preordered it from the Marillion site so I'll probably get an autographed postcard of the album art. Not a big selling point for me but I'm always happy to support these guys.

The band’s manager addressed some of these issues in a recent Facebook post.
Lucy Jordache wrote:
Answer to number 1 is because the band wanted to - they never really liked the original Seasons End - just like they used the Jesus on the front of the AOS one for example.
2. We couldn't find a gig recorded in good enough quality in any archives so we thought it would be nice to have a modern one to go with all the footage on the blur ays from 1990. Kind of like a bookend.
Here is an explanation from the press release about the artwork:
As well as a change in vocals, Seasons End also marked a change in visual identity with the band, which has been reflected in the 2023 deluxe edition of the album. At the time there was a desire for a change of direction from the more illustrative style of Mark Wilkinson’s artwork & logo, replacing that with a more photographic graphic style provided by Bill Smith Studio & Carl Glover who went on to work with the band over the coming years. A new direction began, with Steve Hogarth now fronting the band, and with this first release of Seasons End there was a need to retain some familiar elements for existing fans of the band, so a decision was made to carry through the original logo & some nods to previous artworks.
The 2023 Deluxe Edition has taken on another new approach, which took some of the original artwork elements without the need for older logos and imagery - presented in a slightly different form. Based around the four main elements of Earth, Air, Fire & Water, from the original cover concept, the rectangular panels became triangular as these elements are often depicted in symbology. The panels are sat in a background with an abstract representation of the space out of which these elements are born, giving it all a more universal feel. A whole range of new images were then created for each of the ten tracks using the same abstract painted collage style to tie it all together as content for these extended art books that accompany the 2023 releases.

I got my copy from Marillion last week and I've been enjoying all the content on the blu-ray. The new interview documentary was enjoyable (they've all been interesting & informative), the live concert footage is fantastic and, as expected, I loved the surround sound mix of the album. Still haven't played the b-sides or the two CDs with a recent live recording but will get to them soon. Now that I have the package in my hands, I can agree with those who don't like the new artwork. The original was much better. But that's my only complaint. And now all eight deluxe edition box sets sit nicely together.
Do we expect them to do some kind of deluxe edition of The Thieving Magpie live album? Or is this the end of the deluxe edition series?

This release has been frequently described as "the end of the EMI reissues", so I certainly wouldn't hold my breath for an expanded Magpie. But there have also been hints by the band’s manager that they will likely revisit the post-EMI era with similar box sets.

Nothing else is planned by EMI, but I posted a while back that Rothery said the hope was to do every studio album, but I’m not sure that will happen or not, as interest would be far less and there are different labels and costs involved.
