Description
• 106-track, 6CD Box Set retrospective from singer/songwriter Iain Matthews

• Features 2022 remasters of his four albums with legendary record producer Sandy Roberton (‘Stealin’ Home’, ‘Siamese Friends’, ‘Spot Of Interference’ and ‘Shook’)

• Contains 50% previously unreleased material, including early songwriting demos and multiple live performances

Musician and singer-songwriter Iain Matthews should need no introduction. He was an original member of legendary folk rock band Fairport Convention from 1967 to 1969 before leaving to form Matthews Southern Comfort, who scored a UK number one in 1970 with Joni Mitchell’s ‘Woodstock’. In the early 1970s, as well as recording solo for Vertigo and Elektra, Iain played in folk rock “supergroup” Plainsong. Collectively, this body of work established Iain as a master-craftsman of both his own songs and those of others – a tradition he has continued to explore down the decades.

After a mid-‘70s spell with Columbia Records, he teamed up with his long-time producer Sandy Roberton for four albums across the late 1970s and early 1980s, a fertile period which is the subject of our first box set commemorating the various eras of Iain’s long and illustrious career. Stateside, Iain was rarely more popular: in 1979, his cover of Terence Boylan’s ‘Shake It’ reached No 13 on the US charts. A perfect slice of soft rock, ‘Shake It’ also rewarded him with a No 6 hit in Canada and made the Top 20 in New Zealand.

This 6CD box set re-presents the four original albums from that era, ‘Stealin’ Home’, ‘Siamese Friends’, ‘Spot Of Interference’ and ‘Shook’, alongside a wealth of previously unissued material culled both from Iain’s own archive and the collections of fans worldwide. Iain’s 1978 BBC In Concert special gets its first official airing on CD; elsewhere, there’s a wealth of live and demo material to delight even the most casual admirer of Matthews’ music.

for me,

'stealin home' is one of matthews best.

the other three are middle to lower tier. all 3 have spots of excellence.

none of the 4 are easy to find, nor were they ever easy to find (except 'stealin home')

price, for me, will be a huge determining factor on this one, and if the english price ($35 US) is correct it is not a bad deal if you like iain matthews work.

his catalog, by the way, is all over the place label wise.

I hope the mastering is good, as I own the original cd's. But I must have the bonus trax!

I think 2 & 3 are just as good as Stealin' Home. Spot is hard rock (precursor to Hi-Fi) & Siamese is kind of a bridge between Stealin & Spot. I also like Shook (not as heavy as Spot, but on the rock side). I agree that Stealin is awesome, though it's probably the most commercial pop album in his catalog.

I'm going to have to get this, but both Lemon Records & Made In Poland concerns me a bit. With all the extras I hope and assume that Iain was involved with this release.

Well, it's confirmed in the description:

This will be a UK pressing by a UK label, manufactured in Great Britain or the EU. The "Made In Poland" notation on Amazon UK's listing page is meaningless. European regulations are forcing retail sites to list the point of manufacture, but for some unknown reason the entirety of Amazon UK's music department is showing Eastern European countries. That can be safely ignored.

Lemon is a terrible name for a music label but it came from Cherry Red (their parent label) and its obsession with fruit -- also see their subsidiaries Grapefruit, Strawberry, etc. A long time ago Lemon went through a stretch of reissues where some or all of the tracks were sourced from vinyl. The last few years' releases have been fine (at least the ones I've bought).

I plan to get this Iain Matthews box (this era and the earlier Elektra stuff are my favourites of his), so if nobody else chimes in first, I'll review it for you myself.

USA in the stores (including Amazon) appears to have been pushed back 1 week to 4/1. This is getting common with most imports. Probably overseas shipping issues. Amazon does have as an mp3 now, but I'm holding out for the cd;s.

The vast majority of UK imports have always been scheduled for one week later at Amazon USA. The ones which show up on the same day as in Britain are the exceptions, not the rule.
