Lead Vocalist / Keyboardist George Frayne took on the stage name and persona of Commander Cody after co-founding the band in 1967. Although the group's style was often described in its early days as country-rock, the Bay Area-based band had a harder-driving style - and, as its sci-fi-serial-based name would indicate, more of a sense of humor - than other country-influenced artists coming along at the time down in Los Angeles, like the Eagles or Poco. The sounds of rockabilly, Western swing, jump blues, jazz and boogie-woogie piano figured into the band's free-wheeling style as readily as country, finding enthusiastic fans among followers of rock groups like the Grateful Dead, for whom Commander Cody sometimes opened, as well as devotees of more traditional music forms. In concert was always the best way to experience Commander Cody and this new 2 CD set features a plethora of previously unreleased live recordings showcasing the band in the '70s. $1.00 from each sale will be donated to the American Cancer Society in the memory of George Frayne aka Commander Cody.

I had no idea Cody had passed. I have a great memory.......... He was opening for someone (it was either the New Riders, Marshall Tucker or David Bromberg), & as a dj I was hanging out by the stage door for reasons I no longer remember (I was there to interview the headliner). Cody walked up to me & again I don't remember his exact words, but at 18 years old it blew me away to hear one of my musical heroes walk up to me out of the blue & say."We bombed last time we were here. I'm scared ****less".

Needless to say, the band did not bomb; it was a great show.

I'll have to pick this one up. My favorite Cody album is "We've Got a Live One hear", which shows off more of the band's rock & swing sides. This looks similar.
