Description
‘The Early Years 79-81’ boxset represents the band’s first two albums, ‘On Through The Night’ (1980) and ‘High ‘N’ Dry’ (1981), and has been prepared in conjunction with singer Joe Elliott who has acted as executive producer on the set. The mastering has been done by the band’s long serving sound engineer Ronan McHugh.

This deluxe set comes with 5-CDs consisting of the original album remastered, B-sides, rarities and re-mix versions, Radio One sessions, Live from Reading and the first ever appearance of an unreleased and newly mixed show from Oxford in 1980. These remasters have been highly anticipated, and much requested, by Def Leppard fans globally.

Joe Elliott says, “Well the fans asked, and we listened! Really excited to have our early years reworked with a load of rare material including the newly unearthed Live at the Oxford New Theatre, recorded on the 1980 UK tour …. It’s been a trip putting this boxset together and I hope you all enjoy listening to it as much as we did working on it! ”

‘On Through The Night’, the band’s debut album, was released in 1980 and immediately put the rock world on notice. The band were destined for big things with the album charting at #15 in the UK and #51 in the US. Produced by Tom Allom (Judas Priest, Black Sabbath), it featured many of the band’s live favourites and some updated versions of early singles. The album achieved platinum status in 1989.

‘High ‘N’ Dry’, the first of Def Leppard’s albums to be produced by Robert ‘Mutt’ Lange, was released in 1981. It reached #26 in the UK charts and #38 in the US, further cementing the bands status.

‘The Early Years 79-81’ boxset includes a history of the band’s first two albums written by Mojo and Classic Rock writer Paul Elliott (no relation) featuring personal insights from the band on the making and releasing of those early records as well as rare photos and memorabilia.

I knew they would do this. Many aren't going to splurge for the first box set just for those two albums. I'm glad I waited.

This should be very interesting. I wonder if the singular reissues will have bonus tracks?

So do we know yet how this is different from the last box sets?

Rick brought us the cover image, which I've moved up into the first post.

All of the Amazon pre-order links are currently dormant. Def Leppard's own website had a brief mention of the box (no content details, just a mention of it) earlier in December, but that article has been deleted. Let's hope it's not being cancelled altogether.

This is what Def Leppard was to me growing up.

I played High n Dry non-stop thanks to the three MTV videos and On Through The Night was damn good too.

Pyromania was pretty good but much too overproduced for me and I loathed Hysteria and never came back.

So this box is for the early fan like me and others out there.

Anybody get this?

It’s overpriced, but I am very interested.

A question regarding the HIgh 'N" Dry remaster: On the original CD (the one with the "Bringin' On The Heartbreak" remix and "Me And My Wine" as bonus tracks), the song "No, No, No" is faded out early, unlike the original album version, that played out longer and ended abruptly.

Does the remastered CD restore the original outro to the song?

Inquiring minds want to know.

I've had this set on backorder since June 28th, so I haven't heard this CD yet. If it is the same as the CD in the CD Collection Volume One set (and it's probably a safe bet that it will be the same), then you will get about six full volume "No's" and then about ten more "No's" during the fade before the disc ends.

That's too bad. I'm guessing that the song was faded out early for the original LP reissue, but apparently, it was never restored. Pity.

I finally got this in the mail today. I'll post comments after I listen to all the audio, which probably won't be for a couple weeks. But I was surprised by the packaging (in a good way, for once). I figured it would be the traditional mini-sleeves in a CD-sized slipcase. But the outer slipcase measures about 9.5 inches high, 9.5 inches wide and a little less than 1 inch deep. There is a hardcover book inside, and then a tri-fold folder that contains the CDs. But the CDs don't just fit right into the folder, the CDs come in mini-sleeves and the slots in the folder hold the mini-sleeves. This looks like it might be a formula for disaster, as the openings are on the top of the mini-sleeves which could allow the CDs to slip out of the sleeve's during shipment and then the consumer could wind up with scratched disc, but in my case everything was tight enough without be too tight...all the CDs were in the sleeves as they should be and everything arrived in mint condition.

This release gets a big thumbs up.

About the only thing that I think fans could complain about here is that it really does play more like a super deluxe version of On Through the Night...with High N Dry thrown in...rather than a comprehensive overview of the first two albums.

There is a bit of fatigue with hearing some of the same songs repeatedly, but that is pretty much standard with super deluxe versions...but it doesn't seem excessive when compared to other deluxe sets.

Overall sound of recordings plus mastering all range from OK to good-plus. I'd recommend this set, and would think that people who really like the first album will really like this collection.
