Well maybe we're getting close... saw this on ultimateclassicrock.com
Neil Young issued an apology for the delay in releasing the 1975 album Homegrown, calling it “the one that got away.” He's finally putting out the LP this year.
Just before its original scheduled release date, he decided to issue Tonight’s the Night instead. He later described Homegrown as “a very down album” and “the unheard bridge between Harvest and Comes a Time." It was recorded during a period when he was having marital problems as well as personal issues with his Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young bandmates.
“I apologize,” Young wrote on his website. “This album Homegrown should have been there for you a couple of years after Harvest. It’s the sad side of a love affair. The damage done. The heartache. I just couldn’t listen to it. I wanted to move on. So I kept it to myself, hidden away in the vault, on the shelf, in the back of my mind … but I should have shared it. It’s actually beautiful. That’s why I made it in the first place. Sometimes life hurts. You know what I mean.”
He noted that Levon Helm and Emmylou Harris were among the artists who recorded with him and that the album carries “a narration, several acoustic solo songs never even published or heard until this release, and some songs played with a great band of my friends.”
Young said Homegrown would be his first release of 2020, though he didn’t provide a date for its arrival. “This is the one that got away," he added. "This album, in vinyl, displays the beauty, feeling and depth of music record in the analog domain, before digital. It’s the perfect example of why I can’t forget how good music used to sound.”

What makes me especially apprehensive about this seeing the light of day is that it's a legendary unreleased album. For Neil Young fans, this is like the Beach Boys' "Smile" and the Who's "Lifehouse." Several of the songs were re-recorded and released on other albums or played live but the original final mixes, to my knowledge, have never seen the light of day or even appeared in bootleg form.
Neil puts out a lot of stuff, including several albums that probably shouldn't have been released like Landing on Water and A Letter Home, so if an album never sees the light of day, he's most likely not happy with it. He spoke very nicely of Homegrown in his recent post, calling it "the one that got away" and "beautiful" and, although I'm hopeful this will be released, he could still have seconds thoughts and put it away again with no explanation to fans.
For the Archive series, he has no problem releasing some random concert but a long-desired album in another matter entirely. According to Wikipedia, between CSN&Y, Crazy Horse and solo, he has 14 unreleased albums and none have seen the light of day. If he does release it, it'll be a big step.

he has definitely put the kabosh on a whole lot of different things over the years. 'homegrown' is only one of them.
CSNY2K, the buffalo springfield reunion (supposedly there are some very nice tapes out there of the few shows they did), human highway, toast and i could go on.

Who, me?
From what I remember reading, he was ready to release Homegrown in 1975. It was done. Then he played it for some friends, followed by the Tonight's the Night tapes, which he never intended to release, and they told him he should release Tonight's the Night instead. So it's not like this was never completely finished; it was ready to go. And it wasn't that he didn't think it was good enough; it's that his mood changed and he decided he was more about Tonight's the Night at the time. And in the 70's, Neil made creative decisions and never looked back. It's only in his later years that he started to reassess his archives.

Has Neil Young’s Release Date for ‘Homegrown’ Been Leaked?
The page dedicated to Neil Young releases on the Record Store Day U.K. website was removed after reports that his long-awaited 1975 album Homegrown would be made available as part of this year’s RSD event on Apr. 18.
Uncut revealed the apparent plans, noting that “Young has been a longtime supporter of Record Store Day, using it to soft-launch releases such as Roxy: Tonight’s The Night Live in 2018. A wider release of Homegrown is expected in the coming months.”

If you're not nice
All of Rhino's announced Record Store Day 2020 releases are vinyl-only, so WAN can assume Homegrown will follow suit. For CD collectors, here's the key sentence in that article:
Quote:
A wider release of Homegrown is expected in the coming months.

Neil Young Announces 2020 Archival Releases & Delays Crazy Horse Tour
Neil Young will issue plenty of previously unreleased music in 2020 via his Neil Young Archives site. Young wrote a note to subscribers detailing plans for the Weld Series, Sneak Previews, Homegrown, Return To Greendale, Rust Bucket and Young Shakespeare.
Homegrown is due on April 18, Return To Greendale is due on June 19, Archives Vol. 2 is due July 24, Rust Bucket is due October 16 and Young Shakespeare is due November 27. The releases are also noted on NYA’s 2020 Timeline.
The Weld Series will feature live releases captured during Neil Young & Crazy Horse’s Weld tour in support of Ragged Glory in 1991. Tracks from a stop in Buffalo are the first up in the new series. Additionally, NYA’s Hearse Theater will host “Sneak Previews” of “songs and clips that you have never heard or seen. These are things that are almost finished and unreleased at this point, appearing at the Hearse Theater unscheduled.” An announcement of each “Sneak Preview” will be posted to NYA and then fans can watch or listen to the track(s) for 24 hours.
Finally, Neil addressed his BARN Tour with Crazy Horse in a post on NYA. “The idea of announcing the tour and putting tickets on sale is questionable and needs to be thought through,” Young wrote as per Variety in regards to the coronavirus outbreak. “We are all super ready to go, and the last thing we want to do is put people at risk, especially our older audience. No one wants to become sick in this pandemic. So here we are together, watching to see how it goes, how long it will last, and how many more of our planet’s people and animals will be affected.”

That's a LOT of stuff for a guy who rarely delivers.
Also, from what was said in the article, it's not clear if the releases will be the CD format or just streaming/downloads. I guess as April is coming up, we'll soon see if we will see if "Homegrown" is released as a CD. April 18th is a Saturday, so that is a bit curious.
