Description
Jethro Tull released Stormwatch in September 1979, completing a folk-rock trilogy the band started with Songs from the Wood in 1977 and continued the following year with Heavy Horses. Certified gold in the U.S., Stormwatch was also the final album to feature the classic late-1970s Jethro Tull lineup, which included Ian Anderson, Martin Barre, John Glascock, John Evan, David (now Dee) Palmer and Barriemore Barlow.

To celebrate the album’s upcoming anniversary, Rhino will release STORMWATCH: 40th ANNIVERSARY FORCE 10 EDITION. This new 4CD/2DVD set will be available on October 18.

Highlights include:

• Original album and associated recordings newly remixed by Steven Wilson
• Full concert from the Netherlands recorded in March 1980
• Original album and 13 associated recordings mixed to 5.1 DTS and AC3 Dolby Digital
• Flat transfer of the original 1979 mix at 96/24 LPCM stereo
• 15 associated recordings mixed to 96/24 LPCM stereo and five original mixes at 96/24 LPCM stereo
• Presented in a case-bound DVD book filled with an extensive history of the album, track-by-track annotations by Anderson and Pal• mer, rare photographs and more

The recording sessions for Stormwatch stretched from August 1978 to July 1979 as the album’s ecological and maritime themes slowly came into focus on songs like “North Sea Oil” and “Flying Dutchman.” The band recorded several tracks that were left off the album because they didn’t fit the theme. Many of those can be found on the second disc of this set, including “Man Of God,” “Crossword,” “Kelpie” and “The Lyricon Blues.” In addition to those outtakes, the disc also features early versions of the album tracks “Dark Ages” and “Dun Ringill.”

STORMWATCH: 40th ANNIVERSARY FORCE 10 EDITION also includes a previously unreleased recording of Jethro Tull’s concert at Congreßgebouw in the Netherlands on March 16, 1980. The career-spanning performance mixed new Stormwatch tracks (“Something’s On The Move,” “Home” and “Elegy”) with older hits, like “Locomotive Breath,” “Aqualung,” “Thick As A Brick” and “Minstrel In The Gallery.”

STORMWATCH: 40th ANNIVERSARY FORCE 10 EDITION concludes with two audio-only DVDs that feature various mixes of the original album along with the associated recordings featured in this set.

Stormwatch marked the end of an era for Jethro Tull. Due to his deteriorating health, bassist John Glascock missed most of the sessions for the album and only appears on three of its songs (“Flying Dutchman,” “Orion” and “Elegy.”) Tragically, Glascock died shortly after the album was released. The lineup changed even more following the tour to promote the album as Barlow, Evan and Palmer left the group.

Wilson is delving deeper into the Tull catalog than he did with the YES. I would like for him to have at least done Drama before he signed off, but I guess he covered his preferred period.

TheTopTens lists it as less popular overall than Stormwatch. This Was is probably not "Tull" enough for Wilson's tastes.
I might have gone with Crest of a Knave before either of them, though. I listen to it more.
But everyone's Tull preference varies, and it's hard to say that anyone is wrong.

Plus, I think Wilson got his hands on some unreleased material circa Stormwatch, and that excites him (and potential sales).

Based on what I’ve read on other Forums, mainly QuadraphonicQuad, This Was is done and in the can waiting to be released.
There have been quotes from SW confirming this (but of course I can’t find them right now).

If I like the band, a Wilson mix/non master is a no brainer for me.

Wilson confirmed this is due in late 2019, and it sounds like this is last with the Tull catalogue.

I hope it continues, but if not, this is an excellent, under appreciated album to finish with.

Any word if there'll be a hi-res concert included?

Agreed. I do hope A gets a remix by someone down the road. It's also an under-appreciated album.

Maybe Wilson will keep on going. I heard quite a while back that he wasn't going to do Stormwatch. Now he is.

I hope Jakko Jakszyk doesn't do the remixes of the future Tull projects. I am very critical of his surround mixing work and abilities. Surely there are better audio producers than him. Sorry dude but your remixes of ELP and others are awful.

As memory serves, I believe A started out as a Ian Anderson solo project, but ended up being co-opted by Tull as a result of some members leaving the group and the label wanting a new Tull album.

Yeah, sort of. A was for "Anderson," because Chrysalis requested a Tull album (three members had been fired an/or left
the group after Stormwatch, but mainly Chrysalis' overall sales were crap at the time); they wanted a better, sure seller than
what they considered an Anderson Solo album was projected to be.

I may have to agree. His mixes of the live stuff from Songs and Heavy Horses was dismal. I say that because Wilson's mixes have the volume at a comfortable level. On the live Jakko mixes, I have to turn it up almost double what the studio mixes were.

That's correct. But I still like the album. I saw them on that tour also.... my only Tull experience.

Sort of.

It started that way, but with Anderson, Barre and Pegg it wa basically Tull anyway.

Jobson and Craney were the only new members although Jobson only wanted to be listed as a “guest.”

The album isn’t bad, but the tour was great as evidenced by the Slipstream video.

The jumpsuits were offensive however...

Anything by Tull and Steven Wilson is always welcome. Steven just finished a massive world tour so now has some time off to create and do side projects. Let's hope he does some more of these special restoration projects.

The show was great. Jobson with his c-thru violin.... or was it a wire-based violin? Anyway, yeah the jumpsuits were kinda dumb even for the time.

I had 18th row on the floor at the St. Paul Civic Center. My buddy was a photog for the school newspaper and he got some great photos for me. I paid for his ticket so he could take the pix (wasn't a Tull fan). I'll have to dig 'em up.
