Description
FILE UNDER: THE DILS, RANK AND FILE, BLACKBIRD, COWBOY NATION, or wherever the f**k you want.

Brothers Chip and Tony Kinman had fronted some of the most influential bands of the last quarter of the 20th century. Don’t believe us?

After forming the seminal punk band, The Dils (and even scoring an appearance in Cheech & Chong’s Up In Smoke), the brothers became cow-punk pioneers with their next band, Rank And File (whose early line-up included Alejandro Escovedo). They took a more industrial turn with their next band, Blackbird, and returned to more traditional country with Cowboy Nation.

For the first time, 22 previously unissued performances from all 4 bands are collected on Chip & Tony Kinman: Sounds Like Music. Selected by Chip, and taken from the brothers’ archives, these restored and remastered tracks trace their journey like no other collection has, or could. Featuring photos, ephemera, and new notes from Chip, it takes listeners from the D.I.Y. aesthetic of L.A. punk to cowboy songs that feel like they’ve been around forever.

Speaking of liner notes, while you’re in reading mode, Chip will be featured in the new book by John Doe (X) with Tom DeSavia and Friends, More Fun In The New World: The Unmaking And Legacy Of L.A. Punk, coming June 4th.

Sadly, Tony passed away in 2018, but Chip & Tony Kinman: Sounds Like Music solidifies the brothers’ legacy, adds to their already beloved body of work and is a fitting tribute to the music they made together.

Oh man! Look at all that Blackbird material. I may be the odd man out here, but Blackbird were my favorite Kinman band. Partly because I saw them in concert quite a few times, and loved the dark energy of that duo.

Rank & File and The Dils were bands that were always on my turntable so right off the bat this is a must have.

Don't have anything from the Blackbirds though. Dean has perked my interest here. This is such an exciting release!

It's really different from their other bands. The two of them with a drum machine. But the twang in their voices really do connect it with Rank & File.
I'd be curious to know what you think of them. The first two Iloki albums are my favorite. They ended up signing to Scotti Bros and the album was a slicker version of what came before.

Are two that you like available on CD or vinyl. A quick look came up with nothing. Other than the Scotti Bros release any suggestions where to look? EBay?

Discogs. The debut is on available on CD (Red cover with picture of brothers). 8 tracks (actually three "parts" and 5 songs".
The second album (black cover with pink bird) was only available on vinyl. There is also an odd compilation that compiles 6 songs from each of these onto CD.

A side note, the cover displayed on this one is not the Scotti release. It's the cover for the (IMO) superior Iloki debut. I couldn't find a good AmazWAN link for this one :-(

There are three listings for a self-titled Blackbird CD, each showing different cover art:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000008DIE/?tag=imwan-20

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001PTOJIY/?tag=imwan-20

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000PG74DU/?tag=imwan-20

Two of the three show the tracklist for the Scott Bros. CD. The other (the link in the middle) says it's an Australian CD on the Fundamental label -- that one includes the first two vinyl releases on Iloki plus four extra tracks.

Assuming that all the listings are accurate, of course!

Unreleased Chip and Tony Kinman Songs Get New Life with ‘Sounds Like Music’
By DONNA BALANCIA

Spoiler: show
For the first time, 22 previously unreleased performances from all four of Chip and Tony Kinman’s bands are on one collection: Chip & Tony Kinman: Sounds Like Music by Omnivore Recordings.

Chip & Tony Kinman: Sounds Like Music is due out June 28, 2019 on Omnivore Recordings.

Selected by Chip and taken from the brothers’ archives, these restored and remastered tracks trace their musical journey.

“When Omnivore Recordings asked me if I had any unreleased music, I replied, ‘I don’t think so but I’ll check,’” Chip said. “As it turned out I had plenty. Listening to these tracks brought back many memories. Not just memories of the songs but also the times they were created in.”

Featuring photos, ephemera, and new notes from Chip, the release takes listeners from the DIY aesthetic of L.A. punk, to cowboy songs that feel like they’ve been around forever.

Brothers Chip and Tony Kinman fronted some of the most influential bands of the last quarter of the 20th Century.

After forming the seminal California punk band The Dils in 1977 (and even scoring an appearance in Cheech & Chong’s movie Up in Smoke), the brothers became cowpunk pioneers with their next band, Rank and File (whose early line-up included Alejandro Escovedo). They took a more industrial turn with their next band, Blackbird, and returned to more traditional country with Cowboy Nation.

Tony passed away in 2018, but Chip & Tony Kinman: Sounds Like Music solidifies the brothers’ legacy, adds to their already beloved body of work and is a fitting tribute to the music they made together.

“This record is full of our revolutionary fervor, full of our resistance to trends and more importantly to what we had done before, musically that is,” Chip said. “Sounds Like Music is the proof, if needed, that ‘We do as we please.’ It has become my favorite Chip and Tony record, revolution has never sounded so musical!

“So, I’ll leave you with a quote from Tony: ‘If you want to make a good record, record something good.’ We did just that.”

You sure did. I will attribute this to you getting a 3 hours coastal advantage.
Just locked in my order, and bundled it with the Kiki Dee Gold collection.
